Separate the proposed two-second active/scoped-drain grace from the existing sixty-second cleanup watchdog and seventy-second replacement-readiness budget. Keep API and dashboard timing aligned, cover lifecycle timing and ownership with synthetic clocks, and document interrupted-execution uncertainty. Proposal for owner review of the shared lifecycle default; does not authorize automatic replay or guarantee a two-second recovery. Refs lidge-jun#6643

@Ingwannu Could you confirm whether you accept the proposed 2-second active-turn/scoped-drain grace as the shared default for #6643, measured from restart acceptance? It can cut a still-active turn after it was sent upstream, leaving its execution outcome unknown. The proposal preserves no automatic replay; replacement readiness is not evidence that resending is safe. The 60-second cleanup watchdog and 70-second replacement-readiness budget remain separate, so this is not a two-second downtime guarantee. The draft now has a passing root typecheck, documentation production build, GUI build, 213 explicit restart/ownership/resend/layout regressions, and actual-component browser screenshots with confirmation/cancellation checks. The broader import-derived run timed out with failures, which remain under triage. I will retain draft status while the policy decision and required validation remain unresolved. AI assistance was used for this takeover and validation. |

Not landing as proposed: an unconditional 2 s drain grace can interrupt every turn longer than two seconds during a restart, and the PR also changes gui/. #6686 already made the drain answer retryable. A future change would be an explicit opt-in grace on the restart API with the 60 s default preserved. |

Scoped follow-up to the request in comment6038063475, at current head cc7cae7. I am not accepting a two-second shared default. The revised source/description now preserves 60 seconds for omission/default callers and confines shorter grace to an explicit authenticated API option, which matches the owner's direction in comment6040044757; the current diff contains no gui/ changes. The first accepted grace and acceptance-relative deadline are now represented separately from the cleanup/readiness budgets. This is acknowledgement of the revised policy shape, not approval of the whole lifecycle/management change, its authorization boundary, or a two-second downtime guarantee. Interrupted upstream work remains unknown and must not be automatically replayed. The 444 regressions and builds are author evidence; I have not independently rerun them. Current-head Cross-platform CI37646464865 and React Doctor37646464967 are action_required, not completed runtime validation. Keep those execution gates and the independent management/lifecycle review separate; no waiver, workflow authorization, service restart or branch edit was performed. |

Closing this proposal. An unconditional 2 s drain grace would interrupt any turn that runs past two seconds while a restart is in progress, and the change also edits gui/. #6686 already made the drain response retryable (503 with Retry-After and the server_restarting code), which addresses the capacity misreport. If a shorter grace is still wanted, the safer shape is an explicit opt-in grace on the restart API with the 60 s default kept; a focused PR for that would be welcome. Thank you for the detailed analysis. |

Reopening, and apologies: I closed this based on an earlier review of the unconditional 2 s default and did not re-read the current head before closing. The current head (cc7cae7) is the opt-in shape we suggested: |

Arm a separate early-cut timer at acceptance + grace for those values; cleanup, listener stop and process exit still wait for the 200ms flush window, and a pending veto cancels the timer. Thank you, @hulkbig — this landed on Since the branch doesn't allow maintainer edits, the one review fix went into the carry. A grace below 200 ms now cancels active turns at acceptance + grace through a separate early-cut timer. The 200 ms response-flush delay before cleanup, listener stop and exit is unchanged, so the 202 still flushes, and a pending veto cancels the timer. The 60 s default, auth scope, validation and docs are yours as written. Regressions for 1 ms and 199 ms cover this. Closing in favor of #6724. |
Summary
Related to #6643. Add an explicit short-grace option to the authenticated restart API while retaining the existing 60-second default.
POST /api/system/restartcan accept a JSON body such as{"drainGraceMs":2000}. Omission and{}retain 60 seconds. The option must be an integer from 1 to 60000; malformed JSON and invalid values are rejected before starting a drain. A target-bound local restart capability does not authorize the new unsigned body option; explicit grace requires a management session or admin token.Measure grace from acceptance, including the response-flush delay, and retain the first accepted grace across repeated requests. Cleanup retains its 60-second watchdog and replacement readiness its separate 70-second budget. A short grace can interrupt work already sent upstream; it does not establish that resending is safe, and no automatic replay is added.
The dashboard, CLI, tray, joins and automatic callers retain their default. There is no
gui/or tray diff against currentdev. All seven localized API pages now match the English API contract. Documentation covers the API option, validation, idempotence and uncertain outcomes.Verification

A full local run remains impractical alongside the four-version ADK test matrix on this machine. The earlier wider run on head

A 45-file bounded recheck then recorded 1,524 pass, 1 skip and 23 failures; every remaining failure was also reproduced on that head's unmodified parent, with identical failing test names. This is earlier-head baseline evidence, not a wider-suite pass for this revision. The current 25-file regression set covers the revised API, lifecycle and authentication behavior.
