Summary

  • With the main login opted in under "Use credits" and a full usage window, its credit evidence expired every few minutes. Requests in that gap got a local 429 (CodexMainAccountCreditsOffError) whose retry-after was the weekly reset, and Codex ended the turn with exceeded retry limit. Since 6ef255f (v2.77.0), hasSpendableCodexCredits() rejects evidence older than 5 minutes. Usage headers never re-observe a balance, and primeMain skips a main quota that already exists. The only refresh left was the dashboard poll behind the 5-minute MAIN_CACHE_TTL, and that poll stops while the dashboard is hidden.
  • Adds runMainCreditFreshnessRefresh() (src/codex/auth-api/main-credit-freshness.ts) to the existing cooldown-recovery sweep. It runs when main is in creditCodexAccountIds, a usage window is full, the hard lock is not blocking, the main login is not reauth-pending, and the cached credits are still spendable. In that state it re-reads main WHAM once the evidence is 3 minutes old (MAIN_CREDITS_REFRESH_AFTER_MS), through the native-main claim and the shared usage-query pacing. The new observation lands before the 5-minute horizon, so the hold no longer opens a gap. No new timer.
  • Metadata only. It never clears a cooldown, a hard lock or a retraction. Retracted, empty or refused credits and accounts without consent make no read.
  • Not changed here: the refusal's weekly retry-after. With fresh evidence that refusal no longer fires for an opted-in main login with a positive balance. Pool accounts call the same predicate, but they are outside this change.
  • Updates structure/providers/openai-tiers.md (spendable credits section) and the paid-credit paragraph in docs-site/.../providers-accounts.md.

Closes #6692

Verification

  • bun test tests/codex-integration/main-credit-freshness.test.ts: 9 pass, 0 fail. Each guard was checked red: the sweep-hook case fails (8 pass, 1 fail) with the pool-mode-gate.ts hook line removed, and the zero-balance case fails (8 pass, 1 fail) without the balance guard. The "without the refresh" case reproduces the refusal on aged-out evidence.
  • After review fixes (d24100d): bun test on main-credit-freshness, codex-credits-after-limit-main, main-account-hard-lock-recovery and the two test-layout guards gives 109 pass, 0 fail. typecheck, structure:check and privacy:scan pass. The src/codex/auth-api.ts barrel export was dropped, so the change no longer touches that surface.
  • bun run typecheck: pass.
  • bun run structure:check: pass.
  • bun run privacy:scan: pass.
  • bun test tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: 18 pass.
  • bun run test:changed (resolved to the whole suite, 32764 tests): 32604 pass, 109 skip, 51 fail. The 51 failures are in 15 service/shim/CLI-subprocess/desktop-runtime files, none of them credits or quota related. Running those 15 files alone on clean dev (9099e4b) and on this branch gives the same result on both, 497 pass and 21 fail, with identical failing test names. The extra failures in the full run are subprocess timeouts under load.
  • Not run separately: full bun run test. test:changed already covered the whole suite here, and the remaining failures are left to CI.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. The change adds a background read of the main account's quota metadata through the existing claim and pacing. It adds no new credential handling, logging or config.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • When paid-credit use is enabled and the usage window is full, spendable cached credits are refreshed in the background, even when the dashboard is closed. This can help keep main-account authentication available as credit evidence ages.
    • Refreshes are skipped when a hard lock blocks use, reauthentication is required, credits are unavailable or exhausted, or consent is off. If a read is delayed or fails, the cached evidence may expire before a later successful refresh.
  • Documentation

    • Updated account-credit and spendable-credit guidance to explain refresh timing and conditions.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The existing state sweep now refreshes eligible main-account credit evidence through a WHAM probe. The refresh checks credit eligibility and freshness, skips specified blocked or unavailable states, and shares any in-flight attempt. Integration tests and documentation cover the behavior.

Main-account credit freshness

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guarded credit refresh
src/codex/auth-api/main-credit-freshness.ts
Adds a refresh threshold and eligibility checks for opted-in main-account credits. Skips refresh for blocking hard locks, reauthentication, active query backoff, or unavailable native-main claims. Shares in-flight attempts and releases the claim when the probe settles.

src/codex/auth-api/pool-mode-gate.ts, tests/codex-integration/main-credit-freshness.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/providers-accounts.md, structure/providers/openai-tiers.md
Invokes the refresh from the existing state sweep. Integration tests cover refresh timing, authentication, sweep invocation, and skip cases. Updates the test-layout mappings and documents refresh behavior and exclusions.

Eligible main-account credit evidence is refreshed in the background without relying on the dashboard. A paced or failed read can still leave it stale, as documented; no material merge blocker is established.

Maintainer review (compat sweep, gpt-6.1-sol adversarial review, not a merge decision).

[P1] src/codex/auth-api/main-credit-freshness.ts:50 calls the main-account probe from the background recovery sweep without validating or refreshing the stored bearer. The probe sends that bearer to WHAM, and an expired-token 401 is terminal and calls markAccountNeedsReauth (main-account-probe.ts:278-311). An idle main account whose refresh grant is still valid can therefore be quarantined by the new sweep. The tests use a bearer valid for another day and successful WHAM responses, so they do not cover this.

Before this can land it needs (a) a regression with an expired bearer and a valid refresh grant, and (b) a reviewed decision between deferring the probe and preparing credentials first. Because that choice changes background authentication behavior, it is held for maintainer and security review rather than landed in the decision-free sweep.

Superseded by #6669 (bbd4e33), which fixes #6692 through the existing token-preparing worker with a passive renewal probe, avoiding the unrefreshed-bearer quarantine noted in review. Thank you for the analysis and tests; they shaped the final fix.
