🌐 Web query:
Scoop Windows apps current junction version directory; Node.js Windows process.cwd directory junction behavior
💡 Result:
**Scoop’s `current` directory is a junction** to the installed version folder—for example, `...\apps\nodejs\current` points to `...\apps\nodejs\<version>`. Scoop creates or updates that junction on install/upgrade (unless `NO_JUNCTION` is enabled). ([github.com](https://github.com/ScoopInstaller/Scoop/blob/master/lib/install.ps1?utm_source=openai))
For Node.js, **`process.cwd()` reports the process’s current working directory; it doesn’t promise to preserve the junction spelling**. If the process starts with its working directory set through `...\current`, Windows/Node may report the resolved version-directory path instead. This is different from the path used to launch `node.exe`: the executable being under `current` doesn’t itself make `cwd()` return `current`. ([nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/api/process.html?utm_source=openai))
If you need the stable Scoop alias, keep/use the `...\current` path explicitly; don’t rely on `process.cwd()` to reconstruct it. To inspect behavior on your machine, launch Node with that directory as its working directory and print `process.cwd()`.

Canonicalize Scoop paths before applying the launch-directory exclusion.
When Scoop’s current junction resolves to its version directory, process.cwd() can contain that target directory. isInside compares lexical paths, so it does not recognize the target as the current directory. The checks at lines 52 and 65 can therefore allow current\\bin\\npm.cmd, and npmInvocation can select and spawn npm from the same Node installation.

Reviewed exact head 7f3f842. The new cwd exclusion compares path strings, but Scoop current is normally a junction to a version directory. If cwd resolves to the real ...\apps\nodejs\24.x tree while PATH contains ...\apps\nodejs\current\bin, the resolver can treat them as different trees and allow npm even though execution is still inside the Node installation. That violates the PR contract that cwd inside the installation must be rejected.
Please canonicalize the candidate, PATH entry, and cwd to the same real-path basis before the containment check, and add a Windows regression case where current is a junction and cwd uses its resolved target. Then rebase this 111-commit-behind draft onto current dev and run exact-head product CI.

Exact-head review of 7f3f842cd4cae53504e14682f2ba2b7f5bc11791: changes requested. The intended default-Scoop scope is reasonable, but one P2 path-boundary defect remains.
The new allowance compares PATH candidate and cwd lexically. Scoop current is normally a junction to the version directory, so PATH ...\nodejs-lts\current\bin and cwd inside resolved ...\nodejs-lts\24.x\... appear to be different trees and the npm candidate is allowed. That violates the documented rule that cwd inside the same Node installation remains excluded.
Canonicalize candidate/PATH/cwd to the same real-path identity and verify the current target remains inside the expected Scoop app root. Add a real Windows junction regression. Keep NO_JUNCTION and custom home-root Scoop unsupported as already scoped, with explicit negative tests.
The branch is now far behind current dev, draft/readiness 0/4, with no exact product CI and an unresolved matching thread. Rebase and rerun before approval. No security scan was run.

Make the launch-tree assertion exercise the cwd exclusion.
tests/update/update-npm-invocation.test.ts:81 does not inject realpath. The test does not create the synthetic Scoop path, so realpathSync.native can throw in trustedScoopNodeEntry. The catch block then returns false before !isInside(currentPath, cwdPath) runs.
The assertion can therefore pass even if the cwd exclusion is removed. The junction test covers this behavior only on Windows. No other test covers this Scoop-specific branch on all platforms.
