Do not disable standard press-and-hold accent popup #19
Would it be possible for the extension to not disable the press-and-hold accent popup? If that's not possible, it would be good to include latex sequences for accented characters in the standard command set.
I don't think it's easy to keep the popup, it's part of the standard "input method" (which this project replaces) and not part of the base "keyboard", if that makes sense, so we'd basically have to reimplement it. Having accented characters is a great idea though.
FWIW I've set up Ctrl-Shift-space to quickly toggle between input methods, maybe that's a decent workaround?
I used to use Ctrl-Cmd-Space to switch between input methods (a main keyboard layout and greek for some math symbols), but that modality is quite annoying. It's better to be able to compose symbols in some way using a single layout (accent popup, smiley popup, or better, MathSymbolsInput).
(The smiley popup used to be a tolerable alternative to infrequent math symbosl input in earlier versions of macOS, but a few major versions ago the search became basically useless; “R” no longer finds ℝ, you have to type “double-struck”.)
Very late update: dead keys in the keyboard layout now work with the IME (#24), so at least typing accented characters is not impossible anymore. It's not as user-friendly as the press-and-hold popup, though.
