[Bug] Kiro Agent Chat fails to render inline LaTeX math ($...$) while display math works #12107
Description
Before opening, please confirm:
Operating System
macOS Tahoe 26.4
Kiro Version
1.4.26
Bug Description
Bug Description
Kiro IDE Agent Chat does not correctly render inline LaTeX mathematical expressions delimited by $...$, even though display equations delimited by $$...$$ render successfully.
I also tested alternative LaTeX delimiters (\(...\) and \[...\]), but neither rendered correctly in Agent Chat.
Enabling "chat.math.enabled": true in the IDE's settings.json does not resolve the issue.
This appears to be a limitation or defect in the Agent Chat Markdown/math rendering pipeline, rather than a general inability to render mathematical expressions.
Related issue: #9880
The previous issue was closed during backlog cleanup on August 21, 2026. The maintainer explicitly invited users to file a new report with their current Kiro version and a fresh Conversation ID if the problem persisted.
Environment
-
Product: Kiro IDE
-
Kiro version: 1.4.26
-
Operating system: macOS 26.4
-
Interface: Agent Chat
-
Relevant user setting:
"chat.math.enabled": true
Thank you for investigating this issue.
Steps to Reproduce
Steps to Reproduce
-
Open Kiro IDE and start a fresh Agent Chat conversation.
-
Send the following prompt:
Please output the following mathematical expressions exactly as ordinary Markdown, without code fences. Do not escape or modify any LaTeX delimiters.
Inline dollar syntax:
$x^2 + y^2 = z^2$Inline parenthesis syntax:
\(x^2 + y^2 = z^2\)Display dollar syntax:
$$x^2 + y^2 = z^2$$Display bracket syntax:
\[x^2 + y^2 = z^2\] -
Inspect the rendered assistant response in the Agent Chat panel.
-
Open the IDE user settings and configure
"chat.math.enabled": true. -
Reload the IDE window and repeat the test in a new conversation.
Expected Behavior
Expected Behavior
Kiro Agent Chat should correctly render inline LaTeX math delimited by $...$ within ordinary Markdown prose.
For example, the following sentence:
The loss is $L(\theta)$, and the gradient is $\nabla_\theta L(\theta)$.
should render both mathematical expressions inline without displaying their literal LaTeX delimiters.
Both inline and display mathematical expressions should be supported:
-
Inline math:
$...$ -
Display math:
$$...$$
Inline expressions should preserve normal paragraph flow, rather than requiring separate display equation blocks.
Actual Behavior
The observed results are:
| Delimiter | Result |
|---|---|
$...$ |
Not rendered correctly |
\(...\) |
Not rendered correctly |
$$...$$ |
Rendered correctly |
\[...\] |
Not rendered correctly |
Only the $$...$$ display math syntax produces the expected mathematical rendering.
The standard $...$ syntax remains unrendered in normal prose.
Setting "chat.math.enabled": true does not change this behavior.

Additional Context
Additional Context
I have already tried explicitly enabling mathematical rendering with:
{ "chat.fontSize": 14, "chat.math.enabled": true}
The issue persists.
Since VS Code supports math rendering in its native Chat interface, it would be helpful to clarify whether Kiro Agent Chat uses a separate Markdown rendering pipeline and whether the corresponding inline math capability can be enabled.
Requested resolution:
-
Support standard
$...$inline LaTeX rendering directly in Kiro Agent Chat. -
Ensure that inline equations render correctly within ordinary prose.
-
Clarify whether
chat.math.enabledis intended to apply to Kiro Agent Chat.

Thanks for filing this detailed report on inline LaTeX rendering in Agent Chat — the clear reproduction steps and context linking back to the earlier issue are really helpful! A maintainer will take a look at this soon. We appreciate you taking the time to re-report this with fresh details, and we'll keep you posted! 🙏

Thanks for raising this. Inline LaTeX using single-dollar delimiters (
$...$) is not rendering correctly, while display math ($$...$$) works as expected. This looks like a gap in the math renderer's inline delimiter support. We are marking this as a bug to investigate further.
