What

The history includes the commits from #59 (closed) and a revert of their behaviour: per the review there, the setup wizard servo bar stays display-only and the nudge buttons remain the only way to move a joint during calibration. What carries over is styling only: the servo test page slider uses a shared .servo-slider class whose thumb sits centered on the track.

  • The control panel moves out of the 1600-line raw string in src/http/index_page.cpp into ui/: index.html, src/style.css, and ES modules under src/ (shell/routing, API client, status bar, servo page, config, animations, tests, and the setup wizard split into calibration and LED mapping). The JS is rewritten as modern JS: const/let, arrow functions, async/await, URLSearchParams, and one perform() helper for the lock / POST / report-status pattern every action used to repeat.

  • Vite bundles and minifies JS and CSS; html-minifier-terser minifies the HTML. pio run (and therefore buildfs, uploadfs, otafs) runs npm ci when the lockfile changed, then vite build, then gzips ui/dist/ into data/ui/. The LittleFS size check now counts subdirectories.

  • Firmware streams /ui/index.html.gz for the page routes (no-cache) and serves /ui/* with Content-Encoding: gzip. Content-hashed bundles under /ui/assets/ get max-age=31536000, immutable. If the filesystem image is missing, the page returns a 503 with upload instructions.

  • Bundle size, stored and sent gzipped:

    File Minified Gzipped
    index.html 27.4 KB 6.6 KB
    assets/index-*.js 18.4 KB 6.7 KB
    assets/index-*.css 11.8 KB 2.8 KB
    Total 57.6 KB 16.1 KB

Before, the page was 77.7 KB of HTML compiled into the firmware and sent uncompressed. Firmware is about 72 KB smaller; the full LittleFS image including WAVs is 712 KB of 1.8 MB. Repeat visits only refetch the 6.6 KB HTML since the hashed assets are cached as immutable.

  • npm run dev --prefix ui serves the UI on 127.0.0.1 and proxies API calls to TINY_ENGINEER_URL, so UI work does not need a flash.

  • npm run lint --prefix ui runs html-validate, ESLint (no-var, prefer-const, prefer-template, curly, blank lines around control flow via @stylistic/padding-line-between-statements, …), Stylelint (stylelint-config-standard) and Prettier --check, and runs in CI. Fixed what html-validate flagged: explicit type="button", <thead>/<tbody> on the API tables, inline styles moved to CSS. Duplicated auth/reboot gate styles are merged into one .gate class. For Stylelint, the LED color classes are renamed to kebab-case (led-r/led-g/led-b) and button state rules are grouped at the end of the stylesheet so specificity ascends without changing which rule wins.

  • Firmware and filesystem are one release unit. The build stamps /ui/version.txt with the firmware version (git describe), and the firmware returns a 503 naming both versions instead of serving a UI from another build; this also catches an OTA rollback to the previous firmware slot. pio run -e ota -t ota now uploads the filesystem first, waits for the robot to come back, then uploads the firmware; -t otafs remains for recovery.

  • Functional tests: npm test --prefix ui runs Vitest in jsdom. Each test loads the real index.html, imports the UI modules and drives them against a fake robot (stubbed fetch that answers like the firmware and records requests). 20 tests cover the auth gate, config saving and access-token states, the servo page range hint, and the setup wizard: step order, what each step saves, step-only calibration moves with clamping and revert on failure, and LED order validation. CI runs them after lint.

  • Building the firmware now needs Node 20.19+ on 20.x, or 22.12+, alongside PlatformIO. The firmware CI job and the release workflow install Node 22; docs/flash.md lists it as a prerequisite. Release artifacts and the web flasher already ship littlefs.bin.

Checks

  • Title is type(scope): summary
  • Breaking HTTP / pins / NVS / servo defaults / hook CLI called out as type!: plus a BREAKING CHANGE: footer — none; GET /ui/* is additive
  • Firmware: pio run and/or pio test -e native when that code changed — pio run (default, ota, expression-demo), pio run -t buildfs, pio test -e native, python3 scripts/test_audio_pack.py, npm test --prefix ui
  • Packages: npm test --prefix packages/tiny-engineer-cursor / …/tiny-engineer-antigravity / …/tiny-engineer-claude-code when that package changed — N/A, no package changes
  • HTTP: HTML index (ui/index.html) + docs/api.md (and README / docs/hardware/testing.md if the route list changed) — GET /ui/* added to the in-page route table, docs/api.md and docs/hardware/testing.md; README has no route list
  • Settings: layers in docs/settings.md; no raw access_token in logs — no new settings; docs/settings.md web UI section points at ui/
  • CAD: .f3d + exported .3mf; CERN-OHL-S; AiEmblem.3mf not used as a branding swap — N/A
  • Pins: include/pins.h + docs/hardware/ together — N/A
  • Servo ranges not widened without a real robot
  • Hardware tested: robot / bench / N/A — robot: firmware and filesystem flashed with the new -t ota order, every page loaded with no JS errors, settings and servo ranges load, caching headers verified. A filesystem-only upload from a newer commit gave the 503 with both versions; a full -t ota brought the page back. The setup wizard (setup AP mode) and actions that move servos or save settings were not exercised on hardware.
  • No .env, tokens, or Wi-Fi passwords in logs or screenshots

PCB (if this PR changes a board)

N/A — no board changes.

The calibration bar was display-only, so joints could only be moved with
the nudge buttons. It is now a range input that moves the servo on
release and is disabled while a move is in flight.

The generic form-group range margin outranked the class selector and
pushed the slider below the drawn track.

The control panel now lives in ui/ as plain HTML, CSS and JS. pio run
gzips it into data/ui/, the firmware streams the page and /ui/* assets
from LittleFS with Content-Encoding: gzip, and a missing filesystem
image returns a 503 with upload instructions. Firmware shrinks by about
72 KB.

The markup is linted with html-validate, locally and in CI.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a Vite-based control panel with configuration and setup workflows. Build scripts package version-stamped gzip assets into LittleFS, and firmware serves them through HTTP routes. OTA uploads now send the filesystem before firmware. CI and documentation add UI build and test steps.

The control panel script is split into ES modules under ui/src/ and
written as modern JS. Vite bundles and minifies JS and CSS,
html-minifier-terser minifies the HTML, and pio run builds the UI before
gzipping it onto LittleFS. Hashed assets under /ui/assets/ are served
as immutable.

ESLint, Prettier and html-validate run via npm run lint in ui/. Building
the firmware now needs Node 20.19+.

One thing I'd like to pick up if this gets merged is migrating to Typescript/React or similar and cleaning up the front-end code

The overall direction looks good. Moving the web UI out of the embedded C++ string into a proper Vite-based frontend should make this significantly easier to maintain and develop.

I am requesting changes for two reasons:

  1. The PR carries over the interactive calibration slider from fix(http): make setup wizard servo slider draggable #59. That slider was intentionally display-only for safety, because setup servo movement is not constrained by the normal safe ranges. Please keep calibration movement step-based only.

  2. Moving the UI into LittleFS makes firmware and filesystem versions dependent on each other. The OTA/update flow should explicitly handle this and avoid running a new firmware against an old UI filesystem.

I would also strongly prefer at least a small set of functional tests around the extracted UI logic. This PR moves a lot of behavior (auth, settings, setup flow, servo calibration and provisioning) from one embedded script into multiple modules, and linting alone will not catch behavioral regressions.

Mechazawa and others added 6 commits October 6, 2026 20:39
Anchoring at the end of the path missed /settings?… and /anim?…, so
saves and animation requests stayed on the Vite dev server.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
/setup/servo skips the safe-range clamp, so a drag could command a large
jump and make parts collide or pull cables. The nudge buttons stay the
only way to move a joint during calibration; the bar shows the angle
and the saved band.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The build stamps the web UI with the firmware version, and the firmware
returns 503 naming both versions instead of serving a UI from another
build. -t ota now uploads the filesystem first, waits for the robot to
reboot, then uploads the firmware; -t otafs remains for recovery.

Each test loads the real index.html in jsdom, imports the UI modules and
drives them against a stubbed fetch that answers like the firmware and
records requests. Covers the auth gate, config saving and access token
states, the servo page range hint, and the setup wizard: step order,
what each step saves, step-only calibration moves and LED order
validation. CI runs npm test after the lint step.

Added tests in 41fc7dc. npm test --prefix ui runs them (CI does too). They load the real page and talk to a fake robot, covering login, saving config and the access token, the servo page, and the setup wizard (step order, what gets saved, step-only calibration, LED mapping). I broke a few things on purpose to make sure they actually fail.

The inline page in src/http/index_page.cpp lives in ui/index.html on
this branch, so the POST /play route, its name values and the talking
animation are added there. The dev server proxies /play to the robot.

Thanks a lot for this contribution! This turned into a really solid refactor.

I especially appreciate the work on separating the frontend, adding tests and linting, and iterating carefully on the review feedback around setup safety and firmware/UI compatibility.

The result is much easier to maintain and evolve. Great work, and thanks for polishing the edge cases along the way!
