What changes

The worker-exit workflow runs on a push to main only when the push touches what it tests, the same paths that already decide whether a pull request runs it: src/storage/, the worker fixtures, the search worker's test, package-lock.json, or the workflow itself. package.json is no longer on either list: a change to it without the lockfile is scripts and tooling, which never reach a worker. The nightly run stays.

Why

It is six cells, each 20 to 60 minutes; its last runs on main took 34 to 77 minutes. It ran after every merge, including merges that touched none of those paths: the last one changed only CI scripts. While it ran it held six runners, two of them macOS, the scarcest, and the next pull request's checks queued behind it. On 2026-10-05 a pull request opened right after a merge had 15 of its jobs queued for over ten minutes while this ran on main.

It is not a required check. The nightly run still covers a runner's Node changing under an unchanged repository (#719), and anything the paths miss.

Tests

  • actionlint (the pinned image CI uses) passes on the workflow.
  • npm run preflight passed on this commit.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Every push to main ran the six-cell worker-exit soak, 34 to 77 minutes,
after merges that touched none of storage, the worker fixtures or the
dependencies. It held the runners, two of them macOS, that the next pull
request's checks then queued behind. A push now takes the pull request's
path filter; the nightly run stays, for a runner's Node changing under an
unchanged repository and for anything the paths miss.

… to the nightly run

A package.json change without a lockfile change is scripts and tooling
(11 of the commits since 09-21 that would have started the soak), which
never reach a worker thread.
