Video Clip not Sharing #2

Description

What happened?

I get the following error message when trying to share a video through the "Video Clips" button:

Cannot play Greasing the Pan with Bacon Fat.mp4: The play() request was interrupted because the media was removed from the document. https://goo.gl/LdLk22

I am using Brave browser (shield on and off). The layout does not seem to matter. I tried mp4 as well as webm videos. The videos do work in Streamyard and play when dropped into an empty browser tab.

I have an update. When I delete the ~/.local/share/steramFree/browser folder each time, then the video clips play just fine. I don't need to delete the assets or remove the from the list. In fact, deleting them and adding them again does not fix the issue unless I delete the aforementioned directory each time. This might help to diagnose it further. Fortunately, I can preserve my settings and the assets. I just need to delete that browser folder each time before opening.

Thanks for the detailed report, @thewayfarerproject. The note about deleting ~/.local/share/streamFree/browser was the clue that cracked it.

Cause. The clip player is a <video> element that streamFree never added to the page. The KDE Plasma Integration browser extension, which many Linux desktops install into every Chromium/Brave profile through a system policy, catches media elements like that when they start playing. It adds them to the page and removes them again right away, so its media controls can find them. Chromium pauses any media element removed from a page, so play() failed with exactly the message you saw.

The policy installs the extension into a new profile in the background. That's why only the first launch after deleting the folder worked.

I reproduced it with the extension's own page script: same error, goo.gl link included.

Fix. #3 (merged into main) keeps those elements inside the page in an invisible container before they play, and the extension leaves them alone. The same change also protects the hidden audio element streamFree uses for guests' sound. A new automated test covers this and fails without the fix.

It will ship in the next release. Until then:

    • keep your workaround of deleting the browser folder before launching, or
    • build main from source (cargo build --release).

    Could you check two things?

    1. Does brave://extensions show Plasma Integration (or "KDE Plasma Integration")? I'm fairly sure that's the cause, but I couldn't test Brave on Linux myself.
    2. The first lines of your log say "streamFree needs Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Brave". How is Brave installed (package, Flatpak, Snap)? streamFree looks for brave-browser in your PATH. If yours has another name, STREAMFREE_BROWSER=/path/to/brave streamfree --app tells it where to look. I'd like to add the common names.

I'm closing this as fixed. If clips still fail on the next release, please reopen.
