feat(codegen): L15-C at the front-end: a caller's caps contain its callee's - #281
L15-C, call-graph monotonicity, was proven in ResourceCapabilities.idr (CallCompatible, callCompose, WellFormedCall), but no surface check enforced it. In fact no front-end check enforced any part of L15:
The canonical Rust front-end (typed-wasm-codegen, ADR-0006) skipped capability declarations and caps: clauses entirely.
The AffineScript Checker.checkCapabilities (L15-A and L15-B) is not compiled or run in CI. No AffineScript compiler is on the PATH, and ParserTests.affine never executes.
The owner chose to put the check in the Rust front-end, which CI builds and tests.
Changes
New crates/typed-wasm-codegen/src/caps.rs, run for each parsed module. A module that breaks any rule fails parse_module, so tw compile refuses it.
L15-A: a capability declared twice is refused.
L15-B: a function whose caps names an undeclared capability is refused.
L15-C: when F calls G in the same module, G's caps must be contained in F's. This is checked at each call site, as WellFormedCall states it; callCompose covers chains. A function with no caps clause holds no capabilities.
Parser changes: it records capability NAME;, the caps: { … } sub-clause of effects, and the calls in each body. A call is an identifier followed by (, skipping comments, strings, and ./$/@ prefixes. Candidates are resolved only against the module's own functions, so keywords and builtins never count.
New tests/capabilities.rs (10 tests):
one accepted program;
refused programs for L15-A, L15-B and four L15-C cases: missing cap, no caps clause, callee declared later, per-edge (not just transitive);
comment and string calls don't count;
capability_x is not a declaration;
examples 01 and 03 still parse.

Testing
cargo test --workspace --locked: all suites pass, including the 10 new tests and 2 caps.rs unit tests.
Negative control: with the L15-C rule disabled, the four L15-C refusal tests fail. The rule was restored before committing.
…llee's
The canonical Rust front-end (ADR-0006) skipped capabilities, and its
AffineScript counterpart (Checker.checkCapabilities, L15-A + L15-B) is
not compiled or run in CI, so no front-end check enforced L15.
The parser now records `capability NAME;`, the `caps: { ... }`
sub-clause of `effects`, and the calls in each function body, and
refuses a module that breaks:
- L15-A: a capability declared twice;
- L15-B: a function requiring a capability the module does not declare;
- L15-C: a function calling one in the same module whose caps it does
not hold. Checked per call site, as WellFormedCall states it
(CallCompatible caller.required callee.required); callCompose covers
chains. A function with no caps clause holds no capabilities.
Calls are read from the body's tokens, skipping comments and strings,
and resolved against the module's own functions, so keywords and
builtins never count. New module src/caps.rs; tests/capabilities.rs has
an accepted program and refused programs for each rule (10 tests), and
the four L15-C refusals fail with the rule disabled.
Not covered: `module isolated` bodies (skipped by the front-end) and
calls to imported functions (proposal 0004). LEVEL-STATUS, the grammar
header and the AffineScript comments say where L15-C is checked.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The Rust front end now checks capability declarations and function requirements, and rejects calls to local functions when the caller lacks the required capabilities. Checks are applied at each call site.
Documentation
Updated the language specification and project status to describe capability checking and its current coverage.
Tests
Added CI tests for capability rules, including invalid declarations, missing capabilities at call sites and examples without capability declarations.
The Rust front end now parses module capability declarations, function caps: clauses and function calls. It rejects duplicate declarations, undeclared requirements and local calls where the caller lacks a callee’s capabilities. Tests and project documentation describe the checks and their scope.
Changes: Capability enforcement
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Capability extraction and checking crates/typed-wasm-codegen/src/caps.rs, crates/typed-wasm-codegen/src/lib.rs
The new public capability module extracts capability clauses and call names. It checks for duplicate declarations, undeclared function requirements and local calls whose callee’s capabilities are absent from the caller’s set.
The parser records declarations, function requirements and body calls, then returns errors when checks fail. Tests cover accepted and rejected cases. The changelog, status and specification text describe the checks and scope, including uncovered isolated-module bodies and cross-module calls.

The claim that tests/capabilities.rs runs in CI is supported by the repository's workflows. The review comment's premise that no CI configuration shows this is incorrect.
.github/workflows/e2e.yml runs cargo test --workspace --locked at line 207. Cargo.toml lists crates/typed-wasm-codegen as a workspace member. A workspace-wide cargo test runs the integration tests of every member, including the codegen crate's tests. .github/workflows/release.yml line 38 runs the same command. The PR's tests/capabilities.rs is therefore run by CI, provided that it is a test target of typed-wasm-codegen.
This verdict has two limits. The search did not confirm the exact path of capabilities.rs inside the codegen crate. It also did not check whether the e2e.yml job has path filters or conditions that skip it on some pushes. Neither limit contradicts the claim, but the claim is not fully confirmed for every trigger.

226-229: 🎯 Functional Correctness
The concern does not apply to the inputs in this checkout. The repository's .twasm files, including the fixtures, do not use capability declarations or caps: clauses. The new checks therefore have no input to reject. The comment's premise that other examples or fixtures can now fail is not supported by the repository.
The comment's conditions are valid, but none of them is met. A .twasm file would need a capability declaration or a caps: clause to trigger L15-A, L15-B or L15-C. The search found neither in any .twasm file. The six examples and the three fixtures are included in that result.
All 23 check runs on 6e6a626 pass, including the kernel-proof grade and cargo test --workspace.
The required check scan / gitleaks never reports here. Its workflow, secret-scanner.yml, fails at startup with no jobs. hypatia-scan.yml and governance.yml fail the same way. All three call the standards reusable workflows pinned at da2c748. They fail identically on main (3525213), so this PR didn't cause it. The repo has no fix for it. Re-pinning to standards 75bd599 clears it, and that re-pin is owner-run across the estate. With the required check missing, this PR can't merge until that lands. Nothing else in it needs work.
