Self Test red on main: direct push 5b56aec0 overwrote kyaml-format.sh with a different exit contract #1174

Repo self-tests on main 5a0891e9 fails scripts/tests/kyaml-format-test.sh with 11 FAILs, for example: FAIL: block YAML fails --check — wanted exit 1 and 'is not KYAML', got exit 2.

Commit 5b56aec0 (2026-10-05, a direct push) replaced #1117's scripts/kyaml-format.sh with a rewrite:

• its exit codes differ: 2 means would-change, 1 means error;
• it hardcodes /tmp.

The test still encodes #1117's contract. The other two Self Test failures (build-registry-test.sh, build-scorecards-test.sh) come from registry drift, tracked in #1161.

Acceptance criteria

• Either restore scripts/kyaml-format.sh from df20618b (feat(yaml): kyaml-format.sh, a KYAML formatter with --check (#1022) #1117), or deliberately adopt the new exit contract and update the test to match. Pick one and say which in the PR.
• bash scripts/tests/kyaml-format-test.sh passes.
• The script uses mktemp -d, not /tmp paths. This clears 3 of the Hypatia findings.
