Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added contribution guidance covering signed commits, verified committer emails and approved signing methods.
    • Clarified that pull requests must be squash-merged and that unsigned commits prevent merging.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide now requires signed commits on the default branch and documents signing methods for people, interactive agents, apps, bots and workflows. It also states that pull requests must be squash-merged and that unsigned commits block merging.

- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.

site:docs.github.com unsigned commits pull request rewrite sign commits force push existing pull request branch

💡 Result:

GitHub’s docs say that if unsigned commits block a pull request under a signed-commit requirement, you can **rewrite and sign the commits on the PR’s head branch, then force-push the rewritten history**. The PR can remain open; it tracks updates to its head branch. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/configuring-branches-and-merges-in-your-repository/managing-rulesets/available-rules-for-rulesets?ref=jscarle.dev&utm_source=openai))

GitHub documents signing commits with `git commit -S` and pushing them. For already-pushed history, its commit-rewriting guide recommends `git push --force-with-lease` and warns that rewriting history affects collaborators. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/managing-commit-signature-verification/signing-commits?utm_source=openai))

**Caveat:** force-pushing may be blocked by branch protections or repository rules. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/configuring-branches-and-merges-in-your-repository/managing-protected-branches/about-protected-branches?ref=the-mergify-blog&utm_source=openai))

Rewrite and sign the existing PR branch instead of requiring a new PR.

When unsigned commits block squash merging, contributors can rewrite and sign the commits on the existing PR head branch, then force-push the result with git push --force-with-lease. Open a new PR only if branch protection or another repository rule prevents the force-push.

Suggested fix
- branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.

Review comment at @.github/CONTRIBUTING.md at line 137:
Update the signed-commit guidance around `git cherry-pick -S` to tell
contributors to rewrite and sign commits on the existing PR branch, then
force-push with lease; recommend opening a new PR only when repository rules
prevent the force-push.
