Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the contribution guide with commit-signing requirements for people, interactive agents, apps, bots and workflows.
    • Clarified that pull requests must be squash-merged; unsigned commits block merging, and rebase-merge is unavailable.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide now specifies SSH signing keys instead of GPG keys. It adds guidance on signed pushes, commit authorship, API-based commits, and the required squash-merge process.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: The local setup prerequisite now calls for an SSH signing key instead of a GPG signing key.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: The commit-signing guidance now specifies SSH signing for people rather than requiring GPG-signed commits.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: Adds signing guidance stating that unsigned pushes are refused, people and interactive agents sign with GitHub-registered SSH keys and verified committer emails, and apps, bots and workflows use API writes that GitHub signs. It also specifies squash merges because every PR-branch commit is checked, directs contributors to recreate branches with unsigned commits, and states that rebase-merge is disabled.

Align the duplicate contributor guide with the SSH signing policy.

docs/usage.adoc and docs/architecture.adoc link to docs/contributing.adoc. That guide still requires a GPG key and GPG-signed commits. .github/CONTRIBUTING.md now requires SSH signing for people. This conflict can direct contributors to configure the wrong signing method.

Review comment at @.github/CONTRIBUTING.md at line 58:
Update the duplicate contributor guide’s signing requirements to match the SSH
signing policy in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: require an SSH signing key and state
that commits must be signed, with SSH for people, rather than requiring GPG.
