What changed and why

check-language-compliance.sh wrote its dated compliance log to a hardcoded, predictable /tmp path (/tmp/language-compliance-<date>.log). /tmp is world-writable and the filename is fully predictable from the date, so another local user could pre-create that file ahead of a run — this is a CWE-377-class predictable-temp-file issue. For a PID file that pattern lets an attacker control which process gets killed by stop; here the risk is tampering with / intercepting the compliance report instead.

The log is a kept, dated artifact — tee'd for the entire run, one file per day, not a throwaway scratch file — so the fix uses a per-user XDG_STATE_HOME directory (falling back to $HOME/.local/state) rather than mktemp, creating the parent directory 0700 before first write:

STATE_DIR="${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}/scripts/language-compliance"
mkdir -p "$STATE_DIR"
chmod 0700 "$STATE_DIR"
LOG_FILE="$STATE_DIR/$(date +%Y%m%d).log"

This script has no PID file and is not a launcher, so this does not use the launch-scaffolder/<app>/ path segment that applies to launcher PID/LOG pairs — that convention is specific to launch-scaffolder-generated launchers (see standards/launcher-standard_praxis.deed), and this script carries no generator metadata of any kind (plain hand-written script, verified by grep for a2ml/generator/GENERATED/metadata — 0 hits).

All existing $LOG_FILE usages were already properly quoted (tee -a "$LOG_FILE" throughout); no additional quoting fixes were needed.

Verification performed

  • bash -n check-language-compliance.sh — clean.
  • shellcheck check-language-compliance.sh — one pre-existing warning (SC2155, line 32, unrelated to this change) confirmed present in the unmodified origin/main copy too; zero new warnings from this change.
  • grep -nE "[\"'/]tmp/" check-language-compliance.sh — 0 hits.
  • Standalone smoke test of the new block with a scratch XDG_STATE_HOME: confirmed the state dir lands at 0700 and the dated log file is created and written correctly.
  • Note: line 7 (REPOS_BASE="${REPOS_BASE:-/var$REPOS_DIR}") references an apparently-unset $REPOS_DIR and fails under set -u unless REPOS_BASE is exported externally — this is a pre-existing, unrelated issue on main, left untouched (out of scope for this fix).

Inherited red checks

Re-checked precisely via statusCheckRollup.contexts on both main's HEAD and this PR's head commit. The exact intersection of red-on-PR AND red-on-main is: governance / Guix packaging policy (Nix retired) and governance / Actions lockfile verify — both inherited, neither caused by this change. Correction to an earlier draft: mirror / mirror-disroot, mirror / mirror-bitbucket, mirror / mirror-gitea, mirror / mirror-codeberg, and hypatia / Hypatia Neurosymbolic Analysis are red on main but did not run (mirror jobs) or ran green (hypatia) on this PR branch, so they are not currently red on this PR itself; CodeQL Security Analysis likewise did not appear in this PR's context list. All of these main-state facts remain tracked in #141 with acceptance criteria, since that issue documents main's condition generally, not just what overlaps this one PR.

Automerge

Not armed. The active branch-protection rulesets on main (Branch-Floor, Require-Signed-Commits) carry no required_status_checks rule — the one ruleset that does (Optimus-Branch) is DISABLED — so per the owner's standing rule this PR is left for manual review rather than armed for auto-squash.

check-language-compliance.sh wrote its dated compliance log to
/tmp/language-compliance-<date>.log, a world-writable path with a
predictable name (CWE-377): another local user could pre-create that
file ahead of a run and tamper with or intercept the compliance report.

The log is a kept, dated artifact (tee'd for the whole run and named by
day), not a throwaway scratch file, so this uses a per-user
XDG_STATE_HOME directory (falling back to $HOME/.local/state) rather
than mktemp, creating the parent dir 0700 before first write. This
script has no PID file and is not a launcher, so no
launch-scaffolder/ path segment applies here.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Compliance reports are now stored in the user’s state directory rather than a predictable temporary location. Report directories and files have restricted access, and unsafe report locations are rejected.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on where reports are stored, access requirements, and how to run the compliance checks.

Walkthrough

The checker now sends its dated compliance report through a Julia logger. The logger validates the state directory and log file, applies restrictive permissions, and forwards report output to standard output. Regression tests cover path selection, permissions, invalid targets, and path replacement during logging.

Changes

Compliance log storage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and open private log storage
check-language-compliance-log.jl
The logger validates the absolute state path and dated log name. It opens directories without following symlinks, checks ownership, and accepts only a regular, single-link log file. It applies mode 0700 to the final directory and mode 0600 to the log before truncating it.
Route checker output through the logger
check-language-compliance.sh, check-language-compliance-log.jl
The checker selects an absolute XDG_STATE_HOME or falls back to $HOME/.local/state. It writes report messages to standard output and pipes the dated report through the logger, which copies it to the log and standard output. Existing checks, thresholds, and exit statuses remain unchanged.
Verify and document logging behaviour
tests/check-language-compliance.sh, README.adoc
Regression tests check path selection, report contents, permissions, invalid paths and log targets, ownership where available, and path replacement during logging. The README documents requirements, path selection, restrictions, permissions, and the regression command.

- Line 13: Update the STATE_DIR assignment to use XDG_STATE_HOME only when it is
an absolute path; otherwise fall back to $HOME/.local/state before appending
scripts/language-compliance.
- Line 14: Replace the STATE_DIR creation and subsequent log-opening flow with
race-resistant handling: atomically create the directory with mode 0700, reject
directories not owned by the invoking user, and open the dated log relative to a
trusted directory descriptor with symlink following disabled instead of allowing
tee to follow a path.

the report; reject a short write so the existing error handler reports the

check-language-compliance.sh (1)

136-137: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The pipeline preserves compliance exit statuses.

check-language-compliance.sh:5 enables pipefail with set -euo pipefail. No later command disables it. A non-zero compliance check therefore makes the pipeline non-zero even when the logger succeeds.

🤖 Completed: Generate docstrings for PR #142 — View PR #144

Add Julia docstrings for openat and private_log covering arguments,
resource ownership, permissions, path and file validation, and failure
side effects. Expand check_repo documentation to explain output, counter
updates, return status, and possible early termination under set -e.

Validation: Inspected the pinned diff and function implementations.
Tests were not run; changes are documentation only.
