What changed and why

project-wharf-launcher.sh wrote its PID and log files to predictable
paths under /tmp (/tmp/project-wharf.pid, /tmp/project-wharf.log).
On a shared multi-user host, /tmp is world-writable and the filename
is fixed/predictable, so another local user can pre-create the pid file
and control which process stop subsequently kills (CWE-377 class —
predictable temp file).

This moves both paths to per-user XDG state:

PID_FILE="${XDG_RUNTIME_DIR:-${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}}/launch-scaffolder/project-wharf/server.pid"
LOG_FILE="${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}/launch-scaffolder/project-wharf/server.log"

verbatim against launch-scaffolder main's generator template
(standards/launcher-standard_praxis.deed, :pid-file-pattern /
:log-file-pattern), with both parent directories created 0700
before first use. A pid file must stay re-findable across invocations,
so this is a fixed XDG path, not mktemp.

launch-scaffolder realign will not overwrite this file — it carries
no generator metadata block (no @a2ml-metadata header, no "GENERATED
by launch-scaffolder" banner); it's a plain hand-written launcher.

Verification run

  • bash -n on the changed file: OK
  • shellcheck: no new warnings (file was already clean; still clean)
  • grep -nE "[\"'/]tmp/" project-wharf-launcher.sh: 0 hits
  • Quoting audit: every existing $PID_FILE/$LOG_FILE use in the file
was already inside double quotes ("$PID_FILE", >"$LOG_FILE",
"Log file: $LOG_FILE"), so no follow-on quoting fix was needed.
  • Smoke test: sourced the config block standalone under a scratch
    XDG_STATE_HOME/XDG_RUNTIME_DIR; confirmed both leaf directories
are created and land at drwx------ (0700), and PID_FILE/LOG_FILE
resolve under them. A full start/stop cycle needs the actual
Project Wharf binary built and wasn't exercised.

Merge

Left for owner review — not armed for automerge (this repo's branch
ruleset only has deletion, non_fast_forward, and
required_signatures; no required_status_checks rule, so per
standing instruction automerge is not armed).

Inherited reds

Re-checked precisely via statusCheckRollup.contexts plus checkSuites
on both main's HEAD and this PR's head commit. Confirmed inherited
(FAILURE on both): .github/workflows/generator-generic-ossf-slsa3-publish.yml
(suite-level, no named check run), PHP Composer / build, Hypatia Security Scan, Secret Scanner / scan/rust-secrets, and Governance / Workflow security linter. Correction to an earlier draft: Cargo Audit does not appear on this PR's check-suite list at all (it
apparently only runs on main, not per-PR), so it isn't a confirmed
inherited red on this PR — its main-side failure is still tracked
via #96 / #35. Tracked collectively in #100 with acceptance criteria,
per standing instruction not to let an inherited red silently block or
get "fixed" as a drive-by.

A predictable /tmp path (/tmp/project-wharf.pid) lets another local
user on the same host pre-create that file and choose which process
`stop` subsequently kills (CWE-377 class). Move PID_FILE and LOG_FILE
to per-user XDG state, matching launch-scaffolder main's generator
template (standards/launcher-standard_praxis.deed :pid-file-pattern /
:log-file-pattern):

  PID: ${XDG_RUNTIME_DIR:-${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}}/launch-scaffolder/project-wharf/server.pid
  LOG: ${XDG_STATE_HOME:-$HOME/.local/state}/launch-scaffolder/project-wharf/server.log

Parent directories are created 0700 before first use. All existing
$PID_FILE/$LOG_FILE expansions in the file were already double-quoted,
so no follow-on quoting fix was needed.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Launcher PID and log files are stored in absolute, user-specific directories instead of fixed locations under /tmp. The PID file uses the runtime directory when available, otherwise the state directory; the log file uses the state directory. Required parent directories are created with restricted permissions.

Walkthrough

The launcher now stores its PID and log files under user-specific XDG paths, with fallbacks. It creates both parent directories and sets their permissions to 0700.

project-wharf-launcher.sh
The launcher replaces fixed /tmp paths with XDG-based paths and fallbacks. It creates both parent directories and sets their permissions to 0700.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: metadatastician

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b3df5

The launcher’s PID and log paths no longer vary with its working directory when XDG settings are relative. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b3df5

Private per-user directories reduce shared-host file tampering. Remaining risks concern process tracking during upgrades and runtime-directory changes, and stale process IDs in persistent storage. These risks are bounded by the launcher's existing operating-system permissions.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: A running process recorded only at the old /tmp PID path is invisible to the new launcher; rollback has the reverse problem. Changed XDG values can similarly select a different PID file. Without an external drain procedure, status and stop can miss a live process, weakening shutdown containment and allowing another launch attempt.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The persistent state fallback retains a PID without a boot or process-start identity. If that PID becomes stale and is reused, stop can signal an unrelated process permitted by the invoking identity. Numeric-only validation predates this PR; the concern is its interaction with persistent storage. Any increase over the former /tmp exposure remains unresolved because deployment retention policies are unavailable.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected authority is local file access and process signaling under the invoking identity. No privilege-elevation mechanism is added. Potential mis-signaling reaches processes that this identity is already authorized to signal; production execution privileges are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A stale PID surviving in persistent state can pass kill -0 after PID reuse and cause stop to signal the replacement process. This is a conditional process-identity failure, not a demonstrated new attacker-controlled PID injection path. The effective increase over base remains dependent on old and new storage lifetimes.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — With correctly owned, private XDG or HOME roots, mode 0700 leaf directories reduce another local user's ability to pre-create or modify launcher state compared with predictable shared /tmp paths. The script relies on those root guarantees rather than establishing them itself.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A stable environment keeps all lifecycle commands on the same state path. Changing versions or runtime roots breaks that continuity unless an external procedure drains or reconciles the process, potentially leaving it outside the launcher's shutdown control.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define stable, correctly owned state roots and a trusted stop-before-switch procedure for upgrade and rollback. Bind persistent PID records to boot and process-start identity before signaling. Do not restore discovery by blindly trusting legacy shared-/tmp PID contents.
