Follow-up to #243. Restoring the deleted lockfile blocks was necessary and not
sufficient
: Pages still failed in Set up job with the same annotation.

The dependency list lives on the wrong entry after a re-pin:

'actions/upload-pages-artifact@v5.0.0': # gh actions-lock wrote `uses:` here
    uses:
        - 'actions/upload-artifact@bbbca2dd…'

'actions/upload-pages-artifact@fc324d35…': # the workflow names THIS one
    ref: 'v5.0.0'
    # no `uses:` — so GitHub found no dependency list and refused the job

Regeneration now copies the uses: list onto every entry describing the same
commit, so re-pinning an action can never separate it from the actions it
resolves at run time.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the CI/CD guide to explain that lockfiles include pins for dependencies used by composite actions, and that rebuilding a lockfile from workflow references alone may omit them.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Lockfile generation now retains existing dependency pins and includes dependencies referenced by composite actions. Validation remains consistent with the merged lockfile.

The pinning script now preserves existing dependencies: entries, adds missing entries for workflow action SHAs, and copies composite-action dependency lists between entries for the same commit. The CI/CD guide documents these lockfile requirements and the script’s merge and check behaviour.

Changes: Lock dependency preservation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and index existing lock blocks

The current lockfile is not shown to be broken, but the checks can miss a nested pin that would prevent a Pages job from starting. Address that gap and the parser safeguard before relying on future lockfile regeneration.

…kflow names

The lockfile blocks were restored but Pages still failed in Set up job with the
same message. The reason is which entry carries the dependency list:

    'actions/upload-pages-artifact@v5.0.0': <- gh actions-lock wrote `uses:` here
        ...
        uses:
            - 'actions/upload-artifact@bbbca2dd…'

'actions/upload-pages-artifact@fc324d35…': <- the workflow names THIS one
        ref: 'v5.0.0'
        ...

The tag-keyed entry had the `uses:` list; the workflow re-pinned to the SHA, so
GitHub resolved the SHA entry, found no dependency list, and refused the job.
Restoring the block was necessary and not sufficient.

Regeneration now copies the `uses:` list onto every entry describing the same
commit, so a re-pin cannot separate an action from the actions it resolves.

Validate every nested uses: pin before emitting the lockfile.

build_lock creates dependency blocks only from workflow and local-action references. It preserves a composite action's existing uses: list, but it does not create blocks for nested references in that list. Therefore, --check can accept an unchanged lockfile that is missing a nested pin. The validator has the same gap.

GitHub can then reject the affected job during Set up job with lockfile missing pin for <the nested action>.

Remove the no-op branch and rename the ambiguous variable l.

The if body at lines 297-298 is only pass, so the branch has no effect. The any(...) check at line 297 has no effect either, because the branch never runs its body.

Ruff's default rule set includes E741 (ambiguous variable name). The repository has no Ruff configuration, so the default rules apply to ruff check . in the lint task. That check reports l at lines 297, 300 and 308. Because the task chains commands with ||, a Ruff failure does not fail mise run lint when prettier --check . or black --check . succeeds. The lint task can therefore pass while this violation remains.

block_fields(lines) on line 296 only supplies commit. Compute it at the point of use.

Fail on unrecognised dependency-section lines.

parse_lock recognises only four-space, single-quoted block keys. A different block-key layout can be absorbed into the previous block, or ignored before the first recognised block. The rebuilt lockfile can then lose a dependency block or associate its uses: list with the wrong entry.

Add a clear error when dependencies: contains non-blank content that does not belong to a recognised block. Allow the current format, including field lines, uses: lists, and their list entries.
