Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Contribution guidance now requires commits reaching the default branch to be signed. People and interactive agents must use a GitHub-registered SSH signing key and verified committer email; apps, bots and workflows must use the specified API or signing action.
    • Pull requests with unsigned commits cannot be merged, and must be squash-merged. Rebase merging is unavailable.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide adds commit-signing requirements for commits reaching the default branch. It specifies signing methods by contributor type, requires squash merges, and explains how to handle unsigned commits on a PR branch.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: Adds signing requirements for commits reaching the default branch, distinguishing SSH signing by people and interactive agents from API-based commits by apps, bots and workflows. Requires squash merges because unsigned commits anywhere on the PR branch block merging; directs branches with unsigned commits to be recreated using signed cherry-picks and states that rebase-merge is disabled.

- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.

🌐 Web query:

GitHub documentation rulesets require signed commits existing pull request unsigned commit replace sign commits update existing pull request branch

💡 Result:

**Yes—you can fix an existing pull request without closing it.** GitHub’s ruleset requires every commit in the relevant update range to have a verified signature; updating the branch still checks those commits. GitHub says to rebase the unsigned commit(s) with signatures and force-push the rewritten history. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/configuring-branches-and-merges-in-your-repository/managing-rulesets/available-rules-for-rulesets?ref=jscarle.dev&utm_source=openai))

After configuring commit signing, rewrite the PR branch’s unsigned commits as signed commits, then push that branch with `--force-with-lease`. The PR will reflect the updated branch; GitHub documents force-pushing rewritten history and notes that pushing changes to a PR branch updates the PR. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/articles/changing-a-commit-message?utm_source=openai))

**Don’t just click “Update branch”**: that isn’t a substitute for signing the unsigned commits already on the PR branch. Also, rewriting commits changes their SHAs, so coordinate first if others are working on that branch.

Update the existing PR branch instead of requiring a new PR.

When a PR contains unsigned commits, rewrite them with signatures and force-push the updated head branch. GitHub will re-evaluate the existing PR. Disabling rebase-merge does not require a new PR.
