Summary

PR 1 of the stage-6c stack in docs/decisions/2026-10-19-lexicon-v2-and-identity-arbitration.adoc (#443), after the owner's rulings recorded in that ADR: D1 hub and probe, D2 Nickel, D4 mined candidates flag-only. D3 and D5 stay open. Pacing ruling: PRs 1 and 3 now; PRs 4–6 (arbiter/ABI changes, kernel translation) wait.

Reading of D2 (please correct if wrong): the schema is a Nickel contract applied to the existing TOML tables, which stay the data, so the Rust and Julia loaders are unchanged. Converting the tables themselves to .ncl is left open in the ADR.

Also fixes a live bug: data/synonyms/hol4.toml was not valid TOML (\` ×7), so load_all() failed and echidna corpus crossquery crashed on main. The new contract found it on its first run.

Changes

  • data/synonyms/schema.ncl — schema of record: closed field set, relation (synonym / specialisation / generalisation / false_friend / phrase), phrase, false_friends, evidence (none / curated / probe / kernel), fidelity + residue, scope, with the cross-field rules.
  • scripts/lexicon-check.sh + tests/lexicon_fixtures/ — applies the contract to all 18 tables; 1 accept fixture must pass, 14 planted defects must be rejected. The reject set caught a bug in the first draft (Nickel laziness skipped the evidence check).
  • .github/workflows/rust-ci.yml — check job runs the gate with a SHA-256-pinned Nickel 1.12.2 release (a run: step, no actions.lock change). just lexicon-check runs it locally.
  • src/rust/suggest/synonyms.rs — Relation, LexiconEvidence with to_fidelity() (none/curated → None, probe → DeclaredCorrespondence, kernel → KernelTranslation), FalseFriend, Fidelity, Scope; unknown fields rejected; alternatives() offers only synonym/phrase rows so a false friend is never substituted; related() reports the rest, inverting specialisation/generalisation from the alias side; load_path().
  • data/synonyms/hol4.toml — the seven invalid escapes.
  • data/synonyms/README.adoc, the ADR's decision table and status.

RSR Quality Checklist

Required

  • Tests pass (tests/lexicon_v2_test.rs 7, suggest:: unit 26, arbitration_fidelity_test 4)
  • Code is formatted (cargo fmt --all -- --check)
  • Linter is clean (cargo clippy -p echidna --lib --tests -- -D warnings)
  • No banned language patterns
  • No unsafe blocks without // SAFETY: comments (none added)
  • No banned functions
  • SPDX license headers present on all new/modified source files (MPL-2.0 code/data, CC-BY-SA-4.0 prose)
  • No secrets, credentials, or .env files included

As Applicable

  • Repo deed (meta) and/or docs/decisions/ updated — ADR rulings recorded
  • Documentation updated — data/synonyms/README.adoc
  • CHANGELOG — not yet; will add if you want it on this PR
  • New dependencies — none (Nickel is a CI/dev tool, pinned by hash)
  • ABI/FFI changes — none

Testing

  • tests/lexicon_v2_test.rs: both table-loading tests failed before the hol4.toml fix and pass after.
  • scripts/lexicon-check.sh: 33 files, all as expected.
  • echidna corpus crossquery well-foundedness: crashes with main's hol4.toml, prints 4 entries after.

Note: the branch history includes a no-change merge joining the old #443 branch tip (the tree is identical to my commit); the diff against main is only this PR's changes.

…R, with the false-friend census

Propose the next step past per-prover synonyms: a lexicon schema that can
record false friends, phrases, specialisations and equivalences with a
witness, and an identity-arbitration architecture (λΠ hub for `sound`,
consequence-partition probes for `epi`) that maps onto the two ECH-05
fidelity constructors without arbiter or ABI changes.

Add scripts/false_friend_scan.sh, a deterministic jq + coreutils census over
training_data/proof_states_*.jsonl. On the owner's first stage-6a pair
(HOL4 ↔ HOL Light) it finds 5,060 shared theorem names, 1,030 cognate
statements and 10,460 differing statement pairs, most of them type
generalisations rather than synonyms or contradictions; the within-prover
census shows a name is not an identity even inside one corpus.

Status: proposed. Owner decisions D1–D5 are listed in the ADR instead of
being asked, because the session was ending.

…the measured property

Review findings on #443 (CodeRabbit), each reproduced before the change:

- The final `awk … | head -24` made head close the pipe while awk was still
writing; under `set -o pipefail` the finished scan exited 141 (SIGPIPE).
awk now stops itself after eight pairs and head is gone. Exit is 0.
- `$2 == $3` compared numeric-looking goals numerically (`01` == `1`); both
  comparisons now force string comparison.
- `uniq -d` inherited the caller's locale while `sort` ran under LC_ALL=C;
  uniq runs under LC_ALL=C too.
- The ADR called the 1,030 cognates "byte-identical"; the script compares
after whitespace normalisation, so the ADR now says that.
- The lexicon v2 `evidence` field: `curated` is provenance only and lifts to
  `FidelityEvidence::None`; `kernel` needs `checked_by`; only `probe` and a
complete `kernel` lift to the arbiter's constructors.

The counts are unchanged (95,740/90,170/3,755; 43,937/42,456/1,218; 5,060
shared; 11,490 pairs; 1,030 cognate; 10,460 differing).

…rries independence and injectivity

Codex review findings on #443:

- The extractor admitted rows with an empty theorem name or an empty goal
(three in HOL4, twelve in Why3, more in lambda_prolog), which could join
as "cognates" with nothing to compare. Rows whose trimmed name or
whitespace-normalised goal is empty are now dropped before the TSV is
written. The affected census rows move by a few units (HOL4 95,738 /
  90,168; AFP, ACL2, Why3, lambda_prolog likewise); the HOL4 ↔ HOL Light
overlap and agreement counts are unchanged.
- The ADR claimed the exchange renderings fail safe. They do not: the
OpenTheory renderer collapses unsupported terms to one opaque constant
and drops binder types, so distinct terms can hash alike. The ADR now
says so and requires an injective rendering with unsupported terms
rejected before any KernelTranslation is built (decision 5, PR 6).
- The ADR claimed no arbiter or ABI change was needed, yet asked for probe
independence that DeclaredCorrespondence cannot carry and fidelity_level
does not check. It now specifies a standpoint record on
DeclaredCorrespondence, an Epi lift only when standpoints differ, and the
matching Arbitration.idr argument (option B, decision 3, PR 4), and calls
the change what it is: additive.

# Conflicts:
#	scripts/false_friend_scan.sh
…relations and evidence

Stage 6c, PR 1 of the stack in
docs/decisions/2026-10-19-lexicon-v2-and-identity-arbitration.adoc, after
the owner's rulings D1 (hub and probe), D2 (Nickel) and D4 (mined
candidates flag-only), recorded in the ADR.

- data/synonyms/schema.ncl: the schema of record. Nickel imports each TOML
table and applies `Table`; the tables stay TOML, so the Rust and Julia
loaders are unchanged. It checks shape and the cross-field rules
(phrase <=> relation phrase, lossy => residue, evidence shapes, closed
  field set).
- scripts/lexicon-check.sh + tests/lexicon_fixtures/: the gate applies the
contract to all 18 shipped tables and to fixtures; 1 accept fixture must
pass and 14 planted defects must be rejected. The reject set caught a bug
in the first draft (lazy evaluation skipped the evidence check).
- rust-ci check job runs the gate with a SHA-256-pinned Nickel release (a
run step, so no actions.lock change); `just lexicon-check` runs it locally.
- src/rust/suggest/synonyms.rs: Relation, LexiconEvidence (lifts to
  FidelityEvidence: none/curated -> None, probe -> DeclaredCorrespondence,
kernel -> KernelTranslation), FalseFriend, Fidelity, Scope; unknown fields
are rejected. alternatives() offers only synonym and phrase rows, so a
false friend is never substituted; related() reports the rest, with
specialisation and generalisation inverted from the alias side.
- fix(data): hol4.toml used the escape \` seven times, which TOML rejects.
load_all() therefore failed and `echidna corpus crossquery` crashed on
main; it now runs. Found by the contract on its first run.

Tests: tests/lexicon_v2_test.rs (7, both load tests failed before the
hol4.toml fix), suggest:: unit tests (26), arbitration_fidelity_test (4);
clippy -D warnings and rustfmt clean.

The finding is refuted. The arbiter returns Belief for both invalid probe-count forms, so they cannot produce positive fidelity. The accepted ADR defines Nickel as a contract applied to the TOML data while keeping the Rust loader unchanged. load_path therefore does not need to enforce these cross-field rules.

  • Tests

    • Added comprehensive validation for accepted and rejected synonym data, including malformed fields and invalid evidence.

This change adds a Nickel schema for synonym-table metadata, extends Rust and Julia relation handling, and adds validation scripts, fixtures, tests, documentation, and CI integration for lexicon v2 data.

Changes: Lexicon v2 contracts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lexicon v2 contracts
data/synonyms/schema.ncl, src/rust/suggest/synonyms.rs, src/julia/saturation_synonyms.jl, data/synonyms/README.adoc, docs/decisions/...
The Nickel schema validates lexicon v2 fields and relationships. Rust and Julia preserve relation and metadata fields. The README and ADR document the contract and selected decisions.
Table loading and relation handling
src/rust/suggest/synonyms.rs, src/julia/saturation_synonyms.jl, tests/lexicon_v2_test.rs, src/rust/suggest/variant.rs
Rust adds path-based loading, relation queries, evidence conversion, and defaulted fixture fields. Alternatives exclude non-interchangeable relations. Julia alias expansion applies only to synonym and phrase relations.
Schema validation and CI checks
scripts/lexicon-check.sh, tests/lexicon_fixtures/*, .github/workflows/rust-ci.yml, Justfile, data/synonyms/hol4.toml
The validation script checks shipped tables and accepted and rejected fixtures. The Just target and Rust CI run the checks. Fixtures cover valid and invalid schema cases. HOL4 note quotations use updated backtick formatting.

The changes do not demonstrate a new route from externally supplied assertions to privileged verification. Current substitution behavior becomes more restrictive. The remaining uncertainty is how external callers will establish trust in claimed evidence before using it to support verification results.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated changed boundary is caller-selected local table data entering suggestion and public library APIs. The arbitrary-path API has no identified production caller in this repository; reachability and trust assumptions for external library consumers remain unestablished.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller can load asserted kernel or probe metadata and obtain its corresponding evidence representation, but no production connection from that conversion to arbitration was found. The receiving evidence types were already publicly constructible before this PR. The available evidence therefore does not establish an introduced privilege or verification-authority bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Validation is split between development-time Nickel checks and runtime Rust parsing. Nickel checks probe consistency, kernel hash shape, and relation-dependent metadata. Runtime loading does not apply those cross-field checks, so successful loading alone is not proof of contract compliance or evidence authenticity.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before connecting lexicon evidence to verification decisions, define whether callers must supply trusted, prevalidated tables or whether the integration must validate them. Require evidence provenance and binding to the relevant statement or translation rather than treating a declared kind and well-formed hash as authentication.

Known red checks inherited from main (not this PR's): these are the same three traced on #443, each failing identically on main:

  • T1 Guix manifest check — apt-get install guix exits 100 on ubuntu-latest (24.04 ships no guix package); allow-fail under CI: allow-fail units need an owner and an expiry (ultraplan Phase 2.3) #416. Fix belongs in its own PR (pin the job to ubuntu-22.04 or use the upstream installer).
  • governance / JS runtimes — environment provisions Bun first — the standards js-runtimes crate at pin 75bd599 lacks a [workspace] table, so cargo install refuses it inside echidna's workspace. Fixed upstream in standards 1fed802 (#1299); porting needs the six standards pins bumped plus an actions.lock regeneration with gh, which this session lacks.
  • governance / Validate Hypatia Baseline — 3 unbaselined findings, all on .github/workflows/actions.lock format v0.0.3, which the pinned Hypatia scanner cannot parse.

If any of these reports here, it is the same deterministic failure; no re-run requested. Any other red check on this PR is mine to fix.

CI: Agda (Dogfood Proof Corpus) is red, and the cause is the runner image, not this PR.

  • What fails: just proofs-agda stops in the pinned stdlib with Algebra/Properties/BooleanAlgebra.agda:10.1-37: error: [OptionError] Unrecognized option: --warn=noUserWarning.
  • Why: ubuntu-latest is now ubuntu-26.04 (image 20261012), whose apt installs agda-bin 2.8.0. The job pins agda-stdlib v1.7.3, which its own comment pairs with "the agda 2.6.3 the corpus is verified against"; Agda 2.8 dropped that option name. The last main run of this workflow passed on 2026-10-14, before the image moved.
  • Why it ran here: this PR changes Justfile, which is in the workflow's paths: filter. No .agda file or Agda recipe is touched. main will hit the same failure on its next run.
  • Proposed patch (own PR, not widened into this one): pin the job to the image the corpus is verified against —
     agda:
       name: Agda
    - runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    + runs-on: ubuntu-24.04
in .github/workflows/dogfood-proofs-ci.yml (proof-safety.yml already pins ubuntu-24.04). The longer-term alternative is moving the corpus to Agda 2.8 with stdlib 2.3, which is a proof-maintenance task.
  • No re-run requested: the failure is deterministic on this image.

Review finding on #444 (CodeRabbit): with no reject fixtures, Bash passed
the unmatched `reject/*.toml` pattern through as a literal path; Nickel
failed to load it, and the gate counted that as an expected rejection and
exited 0. Reproduced with an empty reject directory (exit 0, "20 files,
all as expected"). The three sets are now expanded under nullglob and an
empty set fails the gate (exit 1); with the real fixtures it still reports
33 files, all as expected.

…robe counts

Addresses the Codex review of #444.

- Fidelity lifting is entry-aware. `SynonymEntry::fidelity_evidence`
lifts probe/kernel evidence only for an identity claim (a synonym or
phrase row that is not lossy); every other row gives
  `FidelityEvidence::None`. The context-free `LexiconEvidence::to_fidelity`
is now private, so a probe on a false friend, specialisation or lossy
row can no longer promote an attempt to Epi or Sound. Evidence is kept
on those rows: it attests their relation, not identity.
- The Julia mirror (`saturation_synonyms.jl`) carries `relation` and
`expand_aliases` expands only synonym and phrase rows, matching
`Relation::interchangeable`. Untested: no Julia toolchain is reachable
from the build environment and no CI job runs this module.
- The contract refuses empty alias strings, and probe counts that are not
integers in the u32 range; the Rust loader refuses empty names too.
Three new reject fixtures; a test checks the loader agrees with the
contract on them and that u32::MAX passes both.
- Phrase substitution is documented as one-way (alias -> phrase) until
  phrase-aware site detection exists.

ubuntu-latest is now 26.04, whose apt agda 2.8.0 rejects the options
agda-stdlib v1.7.3 sets ("Unrecognized option: --warn=noUserWarning"),
so the job fails on main and on every PR that touches its path filter.
24.04 ships agda 2.6.3, the version the corpus is verified against.
The lasting fix is moving the stdlib to a 2.8-compatible tag; unpin then.

CI on cb9607e: Codex and CodeRabbit both came back with no findings. Three checks were red.

All other checks are green, including Cargo test, clippy/fmt, the Nickel lexicon step and MVP Smoke.

## Summary

`ubuntu-latest` now resolves to ubuntu-26.04. Its apt `agda` is 2.8.0,
which rejects an option that agda-stdlib v1.7.3 sets: `Unrecognized
option: --warn=noUserWarning`. As a result the `dogfood-proofs-ci.yml`
Agda job fails on `main`, and on every PR that touches its path filter
(seen on #444).

This PR pins that one job to `ubuntu-24.04`. That image ships agda
2.6.3, the version the corpus is verified against. The other jobs are
unchanged.

This is a stopgap. The lasting fix is to move the stdlib to a tag that
works with Agda 2.8 (and port any proofs that break), then remove the
pin. The comment beside `runs-on` says so.

## Changes

- `.github/workflows/dogfood-proofs-ci.yml`: the `agda` job uses
`runs-on: ubuntu-24.04` instead of `ubuntu-latest`, with a comment
explaining why and when to unpin.

## RSR Quality Checklist

### Required

- [x] Tests pass: no code changed. The job's own run on this PR is the
test.
- [x] Code is formatted: n/a (one-line YAML change)
- [x] Linter is clean: the file parses as YAML (`Bun.YAML.parse`).
actionlint is not installed here, so it was not run.
- [x] No banned language patterns
- [x] No `unsafe` blocks without `// SAFETY:` comments
- [x] No banned functions
- [x] SPDX license headers present on all new/modified source files
(header unchanged)
- [x] No secrets, credentials, or `.env` files included

## Testing

- Validated locally that the workflow still parses as YAML.
- I have not yet seen this job pass on 24.04. This PR's own CI run of
the Agda job is that check, and I'll watch it.
