What

  • boj_health gave a stale message. When it couldn't reach the backend, it said the REST API was "pending Elixir rewrite" and that a boj-server.service unit starts the bridge. Neither is true: the Elixir backend exists (elixir/, boj_rest), and the unit is boj-rest.service. The message now names the backend, says how to start it (just run / just install-service / BOJ_URL), and lists which tools work without it. The function also gets a docstring.
  • The version was defined twice. dispatcher.js kept its own SERVER_NAME/SERVER_VERSION instead of using lib/version.js, which is meant to be the single source. It now imports from there. The values are unchanged.

Not changed (owner decision)

The release numbers disagree: package.json says 0.5.0 (untagged), while jsr.json and version.js say 0.4.7. publish.yml checks the tag against both, so a v0.5.0 tag would fail until they're aligned. Which version ships next is yours to choose.

Evidence

  • node --test mcp-bridge/tests/dispatch_test.js: 15/15 pass.
  • Live stdio check: initialize followed by tools/call boj_health with BOJ_URL pointing at a closed port returns the new text, and serverInfo still reports 0.4.7 from version.js.

Found during a BoJ system mapping on 2026-10-05; the full map is in dev-notes estate-management/boj-server-system/SYSTEM-MAP.md.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

- boj_health's rest-unavailable text said "pending Elixir rewrite" and named a
`boj-server.service` unit that does not exist. The Elixir backend (elixir/,
boj_rest) exists; the unit is boj-rest.service. The message now says how to
  start it (`just run` / `just install-service`) and which tools need it.
- dispatcher.js carried its own SERVER_NAME/SERVER_VERSION copy, duplicating
lib/version.js ("single source of truth"). It now imports from version.js.
The version values themselves are unchanged (release numbering is the
  owner's call: package.json 0.5.0 vs jsr.json/version.js 0.4.7).

Tests: node --test mcp-bridge/tests/dispatch_test.js 15/15; live stdio
boj_health against a closed port returns the new text.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Improved the health check guidance when the REST backend is unavailable, including instructions for starting it and installing the service.
    • Clarified which tools can continue working offline and which require the backend to be running.

Walkthrough

The health documentation and unavailable-backend message now describe the Elixir backend and tool availability. The dispatcher imports server name and version constants from version.js; its initialization response still uses them.

Changes

Health backend guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Health response and availability guidance
mcp-bridge/lib/api-clients.js
The health documentation describes the payload and structured unavailable result. The unavailable-backend message identifies the Elixir app, startup options, and offline-capable and backend-only tools.

Server metadata source

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared server metadata
mcp-bridge/lib/dispatcher.js
The dispatcher imports SERVER_NAME and SERVER_VERSION from version.js. The initialization response continues to use both values.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 255e5

A malformed health response can be mistaken for an offline service, sending operators toward the wrong troubleshooting steps. This is a bounded diagnostics issue suitable for owner follow-up.

Review details

Systems and components

  • observed — mcp-bridge (service) was modified; 2 changed files map to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in mcp-bridge/lib/api-clients.js: The fetchHealth documentation now describes the health payload, per-cartridge status, and the structured result returned when the backend cannot be reached.
  • observed — Modified behavior in mcp-bridge/lib/api-clients.js: The unavailable-backend message replaces the notice that the REST API was pending an Elixir rewrite and that the stdio bridge was not a REST server. It now identifies the Elixir app and startup options, and lists offline-capable and backend-only tools with their respective availability.
  • observed — Modified behavior in mcp-bridge/lib/dispatcher.js: Replaces the dispatcher’s local SERVER_NAME and SERVER_VERSION constants with an import of both values from version.js; the initialization response still reads those identifiers.

A rabbit checks the backend light,
Then lists which tools can work offline.
The server names come from one source,
Its version joins them on their course.
With notes in place, the bridge is clear,
And hops along with metadata dear.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not report every health-check error as an unreachable backend.

The outer fetchHealth() catch also handles errors after the server responds. For example, invalid JSON from a reachable backend makes res.json() reject, but this message says the backend is not reachable. That can send operators to start a service that is already running. Limit this result to connection failures, or use wording that reports a failed health check without asserting the cause.

Review comment at @mcp-bridge/lib/api-clients.js at line 25:
Update the outer catch in fetchHealth so errors after a successful response,
such as JSON parsing failures, are not reported as an unreachable backend;
reserve the rest-unavailable result for connection failures or use wording that
reports a failed health check without asserting the cause.
