Summary

  • Reject malformed, reversed, non-finite, and lossy widget rectangles instead of silently normalizing or skipping them. Resolve indirect /Rect objects.
  • Add direct detector tests for widget geometry, annotation arrays/references, malformed values, and non-widget annotations.
  • Refresh the implementation plan, test-count docs, and CI evidence ledger with current main-run results.

Validation

  • git diff --check and whitespace checks passed.
  • Rust formatting, compilation, tests, and Clippy were not run: cargo, rustc, and rustfmt are unavailable in this sandbox. The latest green CI run is on main, not this branch.

Remaining review items

  • Four new public BW_* error codes were added; compatibility/version review is required before merge.
  • The generated Actions lock mismatch remains on main (smtp-notify-action@v0.5.0 in YAML vs v0.3.0 in the lock); the prescribed generator was unavailable, so the lock was not edited.
  • FFP/XMP production and the Presswerk seam are not implemented; standards-owner gates remain open. No other repository or issue was modified.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • PDF widget detection now reports errors for unresolved or malformed annotations and invalid rectangles, rather than silently skipping them.
    • Rectangle validation now rejects reversed coordinates, non-finite values and integers that cannot be represented accurately.
  • Documentation

    • Updated guidance describes detector test coverage and clarifies that the current changes have not yet been verified.
    • CI documentation distinguishes passing baseline results from unverified changes and records the generated lock-file mismatch.

The Rust core now rejects invalid widget geometry and reports errors for malformed annotations that were previously skipped. The changes add detector tests and update repository documentation with test counts, error-code counts, CI results, and planned work. The current branch changes remain unverified.

Changes: Rust Detector Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Coordinate and rectangle validation
rust/pdftool_core/src/lib.rs
Integer coordinates must round-trip through f32, real coordinates must be finite, and rectangles with reversed bounds or non-finite dimensions are rejected.
Detector errors and test coverage
rust/pdftool_core/src/lib.rs
Detection now returns contextual errors for unresolved or malformed annotations and invalid widget rectangles. New tests cover these cases, indirect rectangles, and valid non-widget annotations.
Coverage and error-code records
EXPLAINME.adoc, TEST-NEEDS.adoc, TOPOLOGY.adoc, rust/pdftool_core/README.adoc, wiki/Architecture.md, wiki/Contributing--Dev-Setup.md, wiki/Home.md
The documents report 17 test functions, including 11 detector tests, and 24 BW_* codes, including four detector-validation codes. They state that the branch changes have not been compiled or run.

CI Records and Implementation Plan

Layer / File(s) Summary
Current CI status records
docs/ci/CHECK-DETERMINATIONS.adoc, TEST-NEEDS.adoc, TOPOLOGY.adoc, wiki/CI-and-Gates.md
The records distinguish passing main-branch Rust checks from unverified branch changes. They document the Actions lock version mismatch and other observed workflow failures, with causes unspecified where evidence is unavailable.
Plan evidence and constraints
docs/plans/2026-10-10-ultraplan-formatrix-ffp-geometry.adoc
The plan records inspected repository and standards evidence, current implementation status, and constraints and findings for CI, detector geometry, and related interfaces.
Planned work and follow-ups
docs/plans/2026-10-10-ultraplan-formatrix-ffp-geometry.adoc
The plan defines proposed CI, FFP producer, seam, detector-test, and appearance work. It also records external follow-ups, ownership, sequencing, and stop conditions; it does not implement the proposed FFP producer or seam work.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 0224e

Documents whose annotation arrays contain null placeholders may now fail widget detection entirely instead of being skipped. Decide whether that is intended before merging. The other items are documentation accuracy fixes, and the Rust changes still need CI verification.

P2 Badge Record reversed rectangles as accepted

Fresh evidence in the final implementation contradicts this new current-state record: rect_from_coordinates uses min/max, and detect_blocks_normalizes_pdf_rect_corner_order verifies that reversed diagonal corners are accepted. The plan later instructs implementers to remove that normalization, so leaving this as the documented contract risks undoing the conformance fix.

P2 Badge Update the documented Block coordinate type

Changing the public Block fields to f64 leaves the canonical public-surface documentation inconsistent: wiki/Rust-Core.md still declares all four fields as f32, wiki/Glossary.md still describes f32 coordinates, and the changelog still says the i64-to-f32 conversion remains. Downstream Rust consumers and maintainers following those records will use the wrong API and precision contract, so they need to be updated with this breaking type change.

P2 Badge Resolve chained references for annotation entries

When an Annots array mixes ordinary widgets with an element whose indirect object contains another reference, resolve_object stops after the first hop and leaves an Object::Reference; the new non-dictionary branch then returns BW_PDF_ANNOTATION_INVALID, discarding all otherwise valid widgets. Since equivalent chained references are already supported for /Rect and numeric objects, use the cycle-protected chain resolver here as well.

P2 Badge Reject extents that round during subtraction

When both endpoints are exactly representable but their difference is not—for example x1 = -9_007_199_254_740_992 and x2 = 1—both coordinates pass object_to_number, but this subtraction rounds the true width 9_007_199_254_740_993 down by one and the finite-only check accepts it. This silently returns inaccurate geometry despite rejecting unrepresentable input coordinates, so detect an inexact derived extent and return BW_PDF_WIDGET_RECT_INVALID rather than exposing the rounded width or height.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
