Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the contribution guide with commit-signing requirements and guidance for people, apps, bots and workflows.
    • Clarified how to update a branch containing unsigned commits and noted that rebase merges are unavailable.

Walkthrough

The development workflow guide now documents signed commit requirements, signing methods for human and automated contributors, and procedures for merging or replacing a pull request branch.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: Added guidance requiring signed commits on the default branch, with separate signing procedures for people and automated contributors. It directs contributors to squash-merge PRs, explains that unsigned commits on the PR branch block merging, recommends recreating such a branch with signed cherry-picks, and states that rebase-merge is disabled.

Signed cherry-picks save the day.

not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a

site:docs.github.com signed commits unsigned commits pull request rewrite sign commits force push existing branch ruleset

💡 Result:

GitHub’s docs indicate:

- **If a branch requires signed commits, unsigned commits can block a push or PR merge.** For a PR, GitHub checks commits introduced by its test merge—including commits on the PR’s head branch—so even a squash merge can be blocked. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/configuring-branches-and-merges-in-your-repository/managing-rulesets/available-rules-for-rulesets?ref=jscarle.dev&utm_source=openai))
- **Fix:** rewrite and sign the unsigned commits on the PR branch, then push the rewritten history. GitHub specifically says this may require a **force push**. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/configuring-branches-and-merges-in-your-repository/managing-rulesets/available-rules-for-rulesets?ref=jscarle.dev&utm_source=openai))
- **Force-push permission is a separate rule.** Protected branches block force pushes by default; an admin must allow them (and possibly limit who can use them). Rulesets can also block force pushes or allow designated bypass actors. Allowing a force push does **not** bypass the signed-commit requirement. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/configuring-branches-and-merges-in-your-repository/managing-protected-branches/about-protected-branches?ref=the-mergify-blog&utm_source=openai))
- **Existing branch nuance:** when updating a branch, GitHub checks all commits in the specified range. Rulesets and branch protection differ when *creating* a branch, but that distinction doesn’t exempt commits when updating one. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/configuring-branches-and-merges-in-your-repository/managing-rulesets/available-rules-for-rulesets?ref=jscarle.dev&utm_source=openai))

So, if the existing PR branch has unsigned commits, the documented path is to sign/rewrite them and force-push **if permitted**; otherwise, someone with applicable bypass permission may be able to merge.

Keep the existing PR when replacing unsigned commits.

GitHub supports rewriting unsigned commits with signatures and force-pushing the rewritten history to the existing PR branch, when force-pushes are permitted. A new PR is not inherently required. Disabling rebase-merge only removes that merge method.

Suggested wording
- Re-create such a branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
+ Rewrite the unsigned commits with signatures (`git cherry-pick -S`) and force-push the rewritten history to the existing PR branch.

rewriting them with signed commits and force-pushing the rewritten history to

⚠️ Agent ran but produced no code changes.

The CI failures may require manual intervention.

View agent analysis
I made no changes. None of these failures come from this PR, and none can be fixed with a targeted edit inside its scope.

**Why:**

1. **The PR changes nothing compared with `main`.** HEAD (`ab2c7a6`) has exactly the same file tree as `origin/main` (`d9bbdb7`): `git diff origin/main HEAD` is empty. The Signed commits text in CONTRIBUTING is already on `main`, so all five failing checks would fail on `main` too.

2. **Going through each check:**
   - **Empty-linter (invisible characters):** I re-ran the gate's blocking test (C0 control characters / NUL) over the same file types it checks, skipping the excluded `tests/fixtures/invisible-chars/` folder. No file matched. The only hits are the deliberate test fixtures, which the gate excludes. The log is cut off before any finding shows, so I can't tie this failure to a file in the repo.
   - **Hypatia scan:** this clones and runs the external `hyperpolymath/hypatia` scanner. The excerpt stops at the "scanner execution failed" branch, so the scanner itself probably failed in CI. That's a problem with the CI environment or tooling, not this repo's content.
   - **Groove manifest check:** there's no `.well-known/groove/manifest.json` in the repo, so the JSON check in the excerpt never runs. Whatever failed is beyond the cut-off log.
   - **Eclexiaiser:** `eclexiaiser.toml` meets every rule the validator checks: it has `project.name` and one `[[functions]]` entry with a name and an existing `source = "src/lib.rs"`. The failure is beyond the cut-off log.
   - **DEED manifests:** the one error shown is "Missing required identity field" for `docs/governance/MAINTENANCE-CHECKLIST.a2ml`, a cross-repo policy manifest that already exists unchanged on `main`. Adding an identity field to it would mean editing an estate governance file that has nothing to do with this docs-only PR. The log is also truncated after this error, so there may be more failures.

**What's needed instead:** someone should fix these on `main` or in the shared CI workflows and tooling. That includes the Hypatia scanner setup and a decision on whether `MAINTENANCE-CHECKLIST.a2ml` should get a `name =` field or be exempt from the identity check. Full CI logs, not these excerpts, would be needed to pin down the empty-linter, Groove and eclexiaiser failures.
