Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated contribution guidance to require signed commits on the default branch. People and interactive agents must use a GitHub-registered SSH signing key and verified committer email.
    • Apps, bots and workflows must create commits through the GitHub API or approved signing action.
    • Pull requests must be squash-merged. Unsigned commits on a pull request branch prevent merging, and rebase merging is no longer available.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide adds commit-signing requirements and instructions for automated commits. It also specifies pull request merge rules.

Commit signing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signing and merge rules
CONTRIBUTING.adoc
The guide specifies SSH signing keys and verified committer email for people and interactive agents. It directs apps, bots, and workflows to create commits through the API or the signed-push action. It requires squash merges, rejects unsigned commits on pull request branches, and disables rebase merges.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~5 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a0ecf

The recovery instructions are incomplete as written, but contributors can work around the omission. Correct the example before merging; the remaining merge risk is low.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a0ecf

The change separates human SSH signing from GitHub-signed automation without demonstrating a new privilege grant or weaker signing path. However, the repository settings and automation implementation needed to enforce the stated policy have not been verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The documented trust boundary concerns source-code contributions reaching this repository's default branch. The source change does not establish expanded automation privileges, access to other repositories, or changed deployment authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The policy separates signing provenance from integration authority: contributor keys or GitHub-mediated signing produce signed commits, while repository rules and merge settings are described as controlling eligibility. A signature alone is not presented as permission to merge. Whether those repository controls enforce the stated requirements remains unverified.

With keys in place and emails clear,
The squash-merge path is written here.
No unsigned push can cross the gate;
The rabbit nibbles, pleased to wait.

* Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add the commits to the cherry-pick command.

Line 130’s git cherry-pick -S omits the commit argument that git cherry-pick requires. A contributor who follows it verbatim cannot replay the commits onto a signed branch. Show the commit placeholder, for example git cherry-pick -S <commit>, and explain how to replay the remaining commits. (git-scm.com)
