Summary

Documents the Julia nightly check exemption for #111. Both nightly checks (ci.yml julia-nightly, julia-test.yml test-nightly) are red on main — this is expected and correct.

Determination

Accepted with documented exemption per the standing rule (standards#994, AC1).

Both jobs already use continue-on-error: true per the Julia ecosystem convention. Nightly is an upstream moving target; the real compatibility gates are Julia 1.10 (LTS) and Julia 1.11 (stable), which are required checks and remain green.

Changes

  • .github/workflows/ci.yml — Added exemption comment to julia-nightly job
  • .github/workflows/julia-test.yml — Added exemption comment to test-nightly job
  • docs/investigation/2026-10-10-issue-111-nightly-triage/ULTRAPLAN.adoc — Full ulplan with root-cause analysis, decision record, and risk assessment

Closes

Closes #111

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Both Julia nightly checks (ci.yml julia-nightly, julia-test.yml
test-nightly) are red on main. This is expected: nightly is an
upstream moving target and both jobs already use continue-on-error: true
per the Julia ecosystem convention.

Determination per standing rule (standards#994, AC1): accepted with
documented exemption. The exemption rationale is in the workflow
comments and in docs/investigation/2026-10-10-issue-111-nightly-triage/.

Closes #111.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that Julia nightly test failures are informational and do not block compatibility checks.
    • Documented the stable Julia versions that remain required to pass, along with guidance for monitoring and escalating nightly failures.
    • Added triage notes explaining the current nightly failures and the rationale for keeping them non-blocking.

The change documents the triage of two failing Julia nightly checks as accepted with an exemption. It adds workflow comments that identify the nightly checks as informational and state the stable compatibility gates.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/investigation/2026-10-10-issue-111-nightly-triage/ULTRAPLAN.adoc: Adds the document’s context and evidence for both failing checks, including their workflows, nightly Ubuntu matrices, Pkg.test() failure, existing non-blocking configuration, and red results on main.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/investigation/2026-10-10-issue-111-nightly-triage/ULTRAPLAN.adoc: Adds the root-cause analysis and distinguishes nightly failures from stable compatibility gates. It describes potential upstream sources of nightly breakage and records why fixing nightly is not the current determination.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/investigation/2026-10-10-issue-111-nightly-triage/ULTRAPLAN.adoc: Records acceptance of both checks with a documented exemption, the standing rule’s fix/retire/accept options, and that existing continue-on-error: true is not being added to close the issue.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/investigation/2026-10-10-issue-111-nightly-triage/ULTRAPLAN.adoc: Adds a three-phase action plan: document the exemption in both workflow jobs and close Issue #111; investigate nightly failures persisting over 30 days or affecting stable checks; and update standards#994 after recording the determination.

⚠️ Agent ran but produced no code changes.

The CI failures may require manual intervention.

I'm not making any changes: neither failing check can be fixed by editing the code under test. Both are Julia nightly jobs, `julia-nightly` ("Julia nightly - ubuntu") and the crypto-enabled nightly job in `julia-test.yml`.

- **No root cause in the evidence.** The only error is `Process completed with exit code 1.` The failing step runs `Pkg.instantiate(); Pkg.build(); Pkg.precompile(); Pkg.test()` against the Julia nightly build, which changes upstream all the time. With no log output there's no specific source or test failure to point at. Guessing at changes to the Axiom source to suit an unreleased Julia would go beyond fixing the listed checks.
- **They're meant to be allowed to fail.** Both jobs have `continue-on-error: true` (`.github/workflows/ci.yml:59`), so a red result doesn't block the PR. The required compatibility checks are Julia 1.10 (LTS) and 1.11 (stable) in `julia-compat`, and nothing here shows those failing.
- **The PR is documentation only.** On this branch, the nightly-related changes are workflow comments plus the planning doc the description lists. The single commit (`b46fefa`) only rewords those comments, which can't cause a Julia build or test failure.

The only ways to turn these checks green are infrastructure changes, which I'm not allowed to make: drop or reconfigure the nightly jobs in the workflow files, or pin a different Julia version. If someone can get the full log from the failing `Pkg.test()` step, that would show whether a real nightly incompatibility in the package needs a source fix.
