Follows #3271, which built the entry point and run scope this PR hides the analysis behind.

Summary

  • Hot reload's compiled-caller analysis now lives in its own assembly, and the compiler keeps the rest of hot reload behind its entry point. Before this, the run had to remember to stop background reads before taking the cache hold; now it cannot reach the parts that would let it get the order wrong.
  • No behavior change: this PR only moves files and changes type modifiers.

User Impact

  • None at run time. A later change to the hot-reload application code can no longer call the scanner, the call-site cache or the backfill directly. Code that tries fails to compile, so the order the entry point keeps stays enforced.

Changes

  • New assembly UnityCLILoop.FirstPartyTools.HotReload.CompiledCallers.Editor (Editor only). It references the hot-reload shared kernel, ToolContracts and the script path helpers, and precompiled Mono.Cecil.dll only. The hot-reload application assembly and its test assembly reference it.
  • Moved the 14 analysis files with their .meta (GUIDs kept) into HotReload/CompiledCallers/: the scanner, the call-site cache and index, the referenced-method index, the load budget, the backfill, the one-shot caller closure, note enricher and note builder, and the entry point with its run scope and contract types.
  • Public types: only the entry point HotReloadCompiledCallers, the run scope HotReloadCompiledCallersRun, and the types they take and return (HotReloadOneShotCallerNoteRequest, HotReloadCallSiteHit, HotReloadCompiledMethodIdentity). The other 9 types stay internal. Inside the public types, the members hot reload does not read stay internal: the method identity's fields and the note request's Identity and Method (hot reload only builds these values and passes them in; their constructors are public), and the call-site hit's CallerGenericArity and IsFunctionPointerLoad (hot reload reads the hit's other fields).
  • In the shared kernel, HotReloadMetadataTypeName became public because the call-site hit and the method identity carry it. HotReloadReflectionTypeName became public because the metadata name's ToReflectionName returns it.
  • InternalsVisibleTo: the new assembly opens its internals only to the hot-reload test assembly. The hot-reload shared kernel and the script path helpers open theirs to the new assembly, the same way they already do for the patching assembly. The application assembly gets no access to the new assembly's internals.

Verification

  • Local, Unity 2022.3.62f3, uloop compile: 0 errors. Every warning reported is one that existed before (CS0067 / CS0414 in test fixtures, CS0436 in the cross-assembly test caller). No warning points at a new file or line.
  • Hidden parts are really hidden: adding HotReloadCallSiteScanner.CollectReferencingDllPaths(null, null); to the orchestrator fails with error CS0122: 'HotReloadCallSiteScanner' is inaccessible due to its protection level. Reverted afterwards; compile clean again.
  • go run ./cmd/check-asmdef-policy: No asmdef reference violated the policy.
  • OnionAssemblyDependencyTests: 83 passed, 0 failed.
  • scripts/check-file-length.sh: no file over the limit. scripts/check-code-complexity.sh: no Go or C# finding above 15.
  • EditMode tests, one class at a time, 0 failed (class names without the HotReload prefix and Tests suffix):

  • The rename similarity in the diff is 100% for 23 of the 28 moved files. The other 5 differ only by their type and member modifiers and the comment above the internal members.
  • After the members above became internal: compile 0 errors, all warnings pre-existing; the classes that read them pass unchanged (OneShotCallerNoteAttacher 3, OneShotCallerClosure 2, OneShotCallerNoteBuilder 35, CallSiteScanner 30).

…note candidate to top-level types

The compiled-caller analysis is about to be gathered behind one entry point
and then moved into its own assembly. Its contract types have to be
nameable on their own for that, so they stop being nested in the scanner
and the note enricher. No behaviour changes.
… outcomes

The note enricher both built the notes and wrote them back into the run's
outcome list, so it had to know HotReloadMethodOutcome, a type of the hot
reload application assembly. BuildNotes now takes requests (identity and
method name) and returns one note or null per request; a new attacher on
the application side decides which outcomes ask for a note and replaces
the ones that got one. That keeps the analysis free of outcome types
before it moves into its own assembly. The scan order, the budget and the
first-note-wins write-back are unchanged; the worker-note test moved to
the attacher's tests.
…hat stops background reads before a run holds the cache

The orchestrator, the composition root, the warm-up items, the Editor
hooks, the signature-change gate and the run accumulator each reached
into the scanner, the shared call-site cache and the backfill directly,
so the order a run starts in was theirs to get right, and it was wrong:
the orchestrator took the cache hold first, so a run that came during a
background read waited for the cache lock and that wait landed in no
timing step.

HotReloadCompiledCallers is now the one entry point and
HotReloadCompiledCallersRun the scope of one run. BeginRunAsync yields to
the background read before it takes the hold, and the orchestrator calls
it inside warm_up_yield after yielding to the warm-up, so the wait is
measured. End releases the hold and then starts the background reads of
the dlls the note budget refused; Dispose releases the hold only. The
note budget and its log moved into the run scope. Nothing else changes.
…nts its wait, and starts the background reads

The entry point's tests use a cache and a loader of their own: a run
begins only after the background read in flight ended, End releases the
hold before the refused dlls are read, and a run disposed without End
reads none of them. Two orchestrator tests pin what the entry point's
tests cannot see: the warm-up yield comes before the hold, and the wait
for a background read is counted in warm_up_yield.
…ncing dlls and not its own

When the item started handing a flat list to the entry point, the test
that used to pass targets moved to the flat list too, so nothing caught
the item reading a target's own dll instead of its referencing ones. The
flattening is now a method of its own with a test that sees the mix-up.
…ernel and the script path helpers

The compiled-caller analysis is about to move into its own assembly. Its entry
point hands out call-site hits and method identities whose fields are metadata
type names, so those two name types become public; the rest of the shared
kernel and the script path helpers stay internal and are opened to the new
assembly by name.
…eload and its tests

The assembly is empty for now so the asmdef, its references and the meta files
land on their own before the analysis moves in. Only the hot-reload tests see
its internals; the application assembly will reach it through the entry point.
…nd its entry point

The scanner, the call-site cache and index, the referenced-method index, the
load budget, the backfill and the one-shot caller note parts now live in the
compiled-caller assembly and stay internal there. Only the entry point, the run
scope and the types they take and return are public, so the application
assembly can no longer reach past the entry point and break the order it keeps
(stop background reads before a run holds the cache).

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~8 minutes

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6ecb8

The normal orchestrator remains protected, but other application callers can hit an analysis failure if they use the exposed helpers during backfill. Restrict those helpers or enforce the run lifecycle before relying on this API.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6ecb8

The assembly split restricts direct access to analysis internals and preserves the current execution sequence. Its public operations still rely on callers to respect lifecycle ordering. No newly reachable attack path was demonstrated, but the broader exported surface and incomplete security coverage leave some uncertainty.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced exposure is Editor-process DLL analysis and shared-cache activity. Calling the newly exported operations requires code executing in a referencing assembly. The inspected API does not itself establish a remote or cross-tenant entry point, and this extraction does not demonstrate a privilege gain.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The compiler now prevents the application from directly consuming analysis internals, but the public facade still permits scanning and warmup without BeginRunAsync. This distinction limits the claimed ordering enforcement: implementation encapsulation is strengthened, while operational sequencing remains a caller obligation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cache holds are nested and each handle releases at most once. The run nevertheless does not reject note construction after End or Dispose, and its single-build check is an assertion. These lifecycle limitations predate the extraction; the existing orchestrator builds notes while held and ends normally before disposal, so they are recorded as exported contract limitations rather than demonstrated PR regressions.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If this API is intended for additional consumers, make the active-run lifecycle explicit and enforce rejection of note construction after release. Separately document which warmup and scan operations are valid outside a run. This would reduce future shared-cache ownership drift, not remediate a verified attack path.

Keep cache-affecting analysis helpers internal.

HotReloadCompiledCallers is now public, so application code can call FindCallSites or WarmUpCallSitesAsync without BeginRunAsync. FindCallSites reads an entry from the shared cache and then uses it after TryGetOrLoad returns. Without a run hold, a concurrent backfill can evict and dispose that entry while the scanner is using it. The analysis can then fail.

Keep these helpers internal, or require a run created by BeginRunAsync before they can access the cache.

Make FindCallSites and WarmUpCallSitesAsync internal in HotReloadCompiledCallers
so application code cannot access the shared cache without a run hold.

An assertion that threw inside the try left the run going after the test
ended, and that run then wrote its timing detail into the next test's logs,
so one mutation failed an unrelated test with a wrong count. Both tests now
record the in-flight values inside the try and assert them after awaiting
the run.

…mpiled-caller analysis

Hot reload only builds a method identity or a note request and passes it to
the entry point, so their fields stay internal and only the constructors are
public. Of a call-site hit it reads everything except the caller's generic
arity and the function-pointer flag, so those two stay internal.

… run

Outside a run nothing holds the call-site cache, so a read on another thread
may evict and dispose an assembly the search is still reading. The only
caller today runs inside a run; the comment makes that part of the contract.
