Runs the extension release e2e on a sandboxed, current Chromium.

  • playwright 1.64.0 → 1.64.1.
  • e2e/release.e2e.mjs: chromiumSandbox: true; defaults to Playwright's full bundled Chromium (channel: "chromium", because chrome-headless-shell can't load extensions) instead of Arch's /usr/bin/chromium 155. CHROMIUM_PATH still overrides.

Verified locally: pnpm test 11/11; pnpm e2e PASS twice (pair, approve, live webhook, backlog 1-4 in order, store shots). One earlier run failed on the first fetch to a freshly created webhook subdomain, and main was green at the same time, so that's a flake, filed separately.

Closes HAL-4869

Summary by Sourcery

Run the extension release E2E suite against a sandboxed, Playwright-managed Chromium by default.

Enhancements:

  • Run extension release end-to-end tests with a sandboxed Playwright Chromium by default while retaining support for custom Chromium paths.

Build:

  • Upgrade Playwright to 1.64.1 and install its Chromium browser as part of the extension E2E command.

Documentation:

  • Update release E2E usage guidance to document the bundled browser and sandbox requirements.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Automated browser tests now install Chromium before running and use Playwright’s Chromium channel by default, while honoring a configured browser executable path.
    • Chromium sandboxing is explicitly enabled for test runs. These updates affect test execution only; no user-facing product changes are included.

The e2e drove Arch's /usr/bin/chromium (155) with Playwright's default
of no sandbox. It now uses Playwright's full bundled Chromium (channel
"chromium", since chrome-headless-shell cannot load extensions) unless
CHROMIUM_PATH names another, with chromiumSandbox on. playwright 1.64.1.

Reviewer's Guide

The release E2E now launches the extension in a sandboxed, full Playwright Chromium by default, avoiding the system Chromium and incompatible chrome-headless-shell while allowing CHROMIUM_PATH overrides; Playwright is also upgraded to 1.64.1.

The extension updates its Playwright development dependency to version 1.64.1 and installs Chromium before running the release E2E test. The test selects Chromium based on CHROMIUM_PATH and enables the sandbox.

**Release e2e cannot find Chromium**

When a clean install has no Playwright Chromium browser and `CHROMIUM_PATH` is unset, `launchPersistentContext` selects Playwright's Chromium without falling back to an available system executable, so it fails before the release e2e starts.

Provision Playwright's Chromium browser for the release e2e or configure the launcher to use an installed system executable.

**Root-run e2e cannot launch Chromium**

When the e2e command runs as root in a Linux container, `chromiumSandbox: true` makes Chromium reject the launch, so `launchPersistentContext` fails before the e2e scenarios start.

Disable the Chromium sandbox for root-run e2e launches.

**Documented Chromium default is wrong**

When a developer follows the release e2e setup comment, the launcher selects Playwright’s bundled Chromium when `CHROMIUM_PATH` is unset, but the setup comment tells developers the default is `/usr/bin/chromium`; they get incorrect setup and troubleshooting guidance.

Update the setup comment to say that Playwright’s bundled Chromium is the default and `CHROMIUM_PATH` overrides it.

The e2e now defaults to Playwright's full Chromium instead of
/usr/bin/chromium, so the script installs it first. Idempotent, about
two seconds once cached.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Skip the managed Chromium install when CHROMIUM_PATH is set.

release.e2e.mjs uses CHROMIUM_PATH as executablePath, but this script downloads Playwright Chromium for every run. A custom-browser run can therefore fail before the test starts when the Playwright download source is unavailable. Guard the install for the default channel: "chromium" path with a platform-safe conditional. (github.com)

Update the e2e script so the Playwright Chromium install runs only when
CHROMIUM_PATH is unset, using a platform-safe conditional; preserve the install
for the default channel: "chromium" path. Keep the release.e2e.mjs test
invocation in the e2e script unchanged.
