fix: coerce schema type mismatches in tool-call inputs before execution - #48
Conversation
Fantasy's pre-execution validation is type-blind, so stringified booleans, ints, arrays, and objects (e.g. "true" for a boolean parameter) reached the typed decoder and failed with "invalid parameters", burning a full turn on a mistake the repair layer could fix deterministically. Wrap every tool in a coercingTool that applies the same strict, schema-driven coercion rules as repairToolCall before the typed decoder runs; ambiguous values are left untouched so the normal error path still runs. ஃ Generated with Phosphor

- Line 81: Update coerceObject and its caller around the repaired, changed
result so valid properties not listed in the schema are retained when additional
properties are permitted. Preserve fields such as payload while repairing
declared fields like active, and remove extras only when the schema explicitly
disallows them.
Review comments at @pkg/agent/coordinator.go:
- Line 1209: Also apply wrapToolsWithCoercion to the separately constructed
fetchTools slice before agenticFetchTool passes it to NewSessionAgent, ensuring
inner web_fetch and related tools receive the same coercion handling as
buildTools output.
- Line 1209: Change the tool-wrapper order around wrapToolsWithCoercion and
wrapToolsWithHooks so coercion is the inner wrapper and PreToolUse hooks inspect
the coerced input. Ensure any hook-rewritten input is passed through the
coercion/typed-decoding path before execution, preserving the repaired-input
contract.

…erage Address review feedback on the coercion wrapper: additionalProperties is now honoured so extra arguments are only dropped when the schema disallows them, the wrapper order guarantees coercion repairs the input before PreToolUse hooks inspect it, and the agentic_fetch sub-agent's inner tools are wrapped too. ஃ Generated with Phosphor

@coderabbitai all three review findings are addressed in 7d9abab (additionalProperties honoured, agentic_fetch inner tools wrapped, coercion ordered outermost so PreToolUse hooks see repaired input). Note: the wrapper-order finding's fix is applied, but its description had the wrapper semantics inverted — the last-applied wrapper is outermost and executes first, so coercion applied after wrapToolsWithHooks is what makes coercion run before hook inspection. Please re-review. |

You are correct about wrapper order. My earlier description inverted the semantics. The last-applied wrapper is outermost and executes first. Applying coercion after ✏️ Learnings added

check in the tool-call repair flow so an inline argument named properties is not
mistaken for root schema metadata. Identify a complete root schema using the
surrounding schema structure and preserve all valid inline arguments, including
active, when repairing inputs.
- Around line 143-144: Update the additionalProperties handling in the
object-repair flow around coerceObject so schema-valued additionalProperties is
recognized instead of being treated as false. Preserve permitted extra fields
and apply the declared value schema when coercing them, while retaining existing
behavior for boolean additionalProperties.
- Line 115: Update the conditional in the tool-call repair logic around
allowAdditional so an explicitly present props map triggers unknown-key removal
even when it is empty. Preserve the existing behavior for schemas without props
and ensure closed empty-object schemas remove unexpected keys.

Distinguish inline argument maps from root schema nodes, honour schema-valued additionalProperties, and drop unknown keys even when the declared property map is empty. ஃ Generated with Phosphor
Stringified parameter values (
"true"for a boolean,"64"for an int, stringified arrays/objects) failed at the typed decoder with "invalid parameters", burning a full turn on a mistake the agent could fix itself. The repair layer (
repairToolCall) already knew how to coerce these, but fantasy's pre-execution validation is type-blind, so the repair hook was never invoked for type mismatches. This wraps every tool in acoercingToolthat applies the same strict, schema-driven coercion rules before the typed decoder runs. Ambiguous values ("yes","1") are left untouched so the normal error path still runs, and every repair is logged at Info for auditability.ஃ Generated with Phosphor
