Add an opt-in mode for the OpenCode Zen free models - #12
Conversation
OpenCode's free models are gated by the request shape of the official
OpenCode client, not by an account or a key. They answer `403 FreeTierError`
("the free tier can only be used from within OpenCode") for anything else.
The mode is off by default, so nothing changes for existing users: the
free models are reported as `unsupported` and are not routed to. A `403` from
OpenCode describes the request, not a retired model, so it does not mean the
model is broken.
With `opencodeFreeTierCompat` (or `MODELRELAY_OPENCODE_FREE_COMPAT=1`) the
router imitates the official client: a matching User-Agent, a session id in
the format the endpoint expects, `stream: true`, and a tool named exactly
`read`. The mode prints a warning at startup and shows one in the dashboard,
because it may conflict with OpenCode's terms and can stop working at any
time.
Two details the naive implementation gets wrong:
* The upstream only answers a streaming request, so a caller that asked for
`stream: false` would receive an SSE body it cannot parse. The stream is
converted back into a single JSON body for those callers.
* The injected `read` tool is an implementation detail of the gate. A model
may still answer with a call to it, and the caller never declared that
tool, so those calls are removed from the response again.
The User-Agent stays overridable through `opencodeFreeTierUserAgent` and
`MODELRELAY_OPENCODE_FREE_TIER_USER_AGENT`, so a stale version can be fixed
without a release.
…29.0 `docs/free-tiers.md` said "A router cannot use them with any key", which is not the whole truth and not the reason: the free models are restricted by the request shape, and no key is needed for them at all. The page now documents the default constraint (the free models are listed as `unsupported` and are not routed to), the opt-in and its risks, the four request-shape elements the endpoint checks, and the measured key behaviour. `docs/configuration.md` documents the new `opencodeFreeTierCompat` config key, the `MODELRELAY_OPENCODE_FREE_COMPAT` environment variable and the User-Agent override. `docs/dashboard.md` lists the new `unsupported` status. Version bumped to 1.29.0: the change adds a feature, so it is a minor bump.
The ping built its request without the compatibility shape, so the health check reported the free models as `down` with a 403 even though the proxy could route them. The ping now sends the same request as a real request, and the models come back as `up`.
The ping request is now built by `buildPingRequest`, so the free-tier shape in the health check is covered by a test instead of only by a live probe.
`buildOpencodeHeaders` is now byte-identical to the previous version: the free-tier session id format is passed in by the caller, which the function already supported through its `sessionId` option. The User-Agent and the body rewrite stay behind their `freeTierCompat` guards, so the default request is unchanged. The bearer-retry path built its headers and body without the compatibility options, so a request that had to be retried with a key would have lost the free-tier shape. It now uses the same options as the first attempt.

Thanks for the rework. It follows the review closely. Before this can merge, three correctness problems need fixing and one docs gap needs filling. 1. The bearer-retry path still loses the free-tier shape In the retry block, the new 2. The SSE strip is incomplete

4. Docs gap in OpenCode's Zen docs (https://opencode.ai/docs/zen) say that for some free models collected data may be used to improve the model, that the NVIDIA endpoints are trial use only ("do not submit personal or confidential data"), and that some models are geographically restricted. Please add a short note to the opt-in section, since anyone enabling the mode should see it. The existing line that free models may train on prompts does not mention the trial or regional limits. Thanks for the quick turnaround. I ran the branch, and the retry fix and the JSON-path fixes are in. The streaming strip is still not working, and the description says otherwise, so please check each item below against the code before you reply. 1. The proxy does not buffer SSE by line. 2. Argument fragments of a 3. I'd like a single stateful, line-buffered stream transform rather than another patch to the per-chunk function. It should:

Please also check the description against the diff before marking it done, since two claims in it didn't match the code. If this doesn't come back fixed after this round, I'll push the streaming change to your branch myself. |

This is merged and released as 1.29.0. Thank you for the work on it. I could not test it end to end against the live endpoint: all of the free Zen models answer npm install -g @schaetzkc/modelrelay@1.29.0

Follow-up end-to-end check (compat mode on, OpenCode key configured): Tests: Live endpoint: request shape is accepted by OpenCode Zen (no 403 FreeTierError). All 9 free models currently return 429 Free usage limit reached, so no real answer could be observed yet — same as what you saw. Free models checked (all 429): Will retry once the free-tier limit resets and report back with a real streaming/non-streaming response and a caller-declared tool call. |
Reworked as an opt-in mode, per the review feedback
This replaces the default-on version. OpenCode's 403 is a deliberate statement from OpenCode that
the free tier is for its own client, and modelrelay should keep respecting it by default — so the
mode is now off unless a user turns it on and takes responsibility for it.
Responds to the review comment on #11. The branch is
feat/opencode-free-tier-compat; thedefault-on branch is left in place for reference.
Behaviour
Off by default. With the option unset, nothing changes: no
User-Agent, no injectedreadtool, no forced
stream, and the existing session id.buildOpencodeHeadersis byte-identical tothe previous version — the free-tier session id format is passed in by the caller, which the
function already supported through its
sessionIdoption.buildProviderRequestHeadersandbuildProviderRequestBodyeach get one additive guard,if (options.freeTierCompat), so theirdefault branch is unchanged.
The free models are reported with status
unsupportedand are not routed to, so they no longershow up as
downin the health check and no longer skew the telemetry.A config key and an env var.
opencodeFreeTierCompatin~/.modelrelay.json, orMODELRELAY_OPENCODE_FREE_COMPAT=1. The env var takes precedence over the config file, matchingthe other settings in
lib/config.js. Only1,true,yesandonenable it; anything elseleaves it off, so a typo cannot silently start rewriting requests. The value is validated in
normalizeConfigShapeand read through a fixed property, not a user-supplied key.A visible warning. The startup log prints it and the dashboard shows it for as long as the mode
is on. It says that modelrelay imitates the OpenCode client, that this may violate OpenCode's
terms, that it can stop working at any time, and that the user is responsible for using it. The
dashboard reads it from
GET /api/opencode-free-compat.The User-Agent stays overridable through
options.userAgent,opencodeFreeTierUserAgentandMODELRELAY_OPENCODE_FREE_TIER_USER_AGENT, so a staleopencode/1.19.3can be fixed without arelease.
The two correctness problems
stream: trueis no longer forced onto a non-streaming caller. The upstream only answers astreaming request, so the proxy now converts the stream back into a single JSON body for callers
that asked for
stream: false(collectOpencodeStreamAsJson). The request itself always streams;the response is adapted to the caller. A test exercises this end to end over HTTP, not only the
outgoing body.
The injected
readtool no longer leaks into the answer. It is injected only to satisfy thegate, so a model may still answer with a call to it while the caller never declared that tool.
Those calls are removed from the response again — in the JSON path (
stripInjectedToolCalls) andin the stream (
stripInjectedToolCallsFromSseChunk), including thefinish_reason, which wouldotherwise still say
tool_calls.The health check now uses the same request as a real request. The ping built its request
without the compatibility shape, so the models came back as
downwith a 403 even though theproxy could route them. Fixed, and covered by a test.
The bearer-retry path keeps the compatibility options. A request that had to be retried with a
key built its headers and body without them, so it would have lost the free-tier shape on the
retry. It now uses the same options as the first attempt.
What was tested against a real provider
With a stock OpenCode key and the mode on, against the live endpoint:
nemotron-3.5-super-vl-free403 FreeTierError200, contentPONGbeam-free403 FreeTierError200, contentPONGBoth a streaming and a non-streaming caller get the answer they asked for — SSE with
PONG, and asingle JSON body with
PONGandfinish_reason: stop. The health check reports the free models as
upinstead ofdown. The gate was confirmed byablation — changing any single one of the four required elements back to its previous value
reproduces the 403:
User-Agentopencode/<version>(any version from 1.18.0 upwards)x-opencode-sessionses_+ 12 lowercase hex + 14 base62 = 30 characters in totalstreamtruetoolsreadA
You are opencodesystem message is not required — the request is accepted without it, so itis only added when the caller did not supply a system message of its own.
The free models need no API key: an absent
Authorizationheader,Bearer publicand anempty
Bearerare all accepted. A key that is not a real OpenCode key fails with500"Invalid credential" — a server error, not a 403. modelrelay already sends noAuthorizationheader when no OpenCode key is configured, so that path needed no change.
Verified end to end with the
opencodekey removed from the config: the free models route andthe health check reports them as
up.Tests
pnpm test— 358 passing. The new tests were confirmed to fail against the pre-fix behaviour. The sabotage run reverts each part on its own — the session id format, the User-Agent, the body
route, the tool-call stripping in both the JSON and the stream path, the stream-to-JSON
conversion, the
unsupportedstatus, the routing eligibility, and the health-check request — andeach one makes the matching test fail.

Per
AGENTS.md, the docs are updated in the same change:docs/free-tiers.md— the default constraint, the opt-in and its risks, the request-shapetable and the key findings. The page previously said "A router cannot use them with any key",
which was not the reason.
docs/configuration.md— the new config key, the env var and the User-Agent override.docs/dashboard.md— the newunsupportedstatus.README.mdandlib/onboard.jswere checked for stale mentions; the only OpenCode referencesthere are about configuring OpenCode as a client, and none of them describe the free tier, so
neither file needed a change. Version bumped to
