What

Balance-funded internal messages can fund their descendants: descendants selects a Closed, Open or Pinned grant, and its budget joins the child's declared budget

Delivery Context

Closes GVM-364

Hub: genlayerlabs/genlayer-node#2189 (stack-wide E2E runs from there; Depends-On this PR)
Consensus side: genlayerlabs/genlayer-consensus#1811 (CON-965); Open and Pinned grants need it end to end

Changes

  • Executor v0.3 (pr/v0.3/feat/descendant-grants): grant validation and encoding, fee descendant_grant errors, Python UseBalanceParams with allocation-tree flattening, calldata sequences no longer preallocated from the declared length
  • Spec and impl-spec for descendants, constants for the new errors
  • Impl-spec and manager API: hosts append an exhausted external guard to pinned trees and send it alone for closed trees, so an unmatched external fails in GenVM (out_of message_fee allocation_budget external) instead of reverting the leader's reveal; the guard is exported from tests/runner/origin
  • genvm-tool: dependents of a service that fails to start fail instead of wedging the run
  • Includes fix(py-sdk): count extended-slice targets correctly in DynArray 🐛 #37 (DynArray extended-slice assignment) as the bottom commit

Status

Draft. v0.3 runner hashes are consistent (runners-all builds clean); only py-genlayer, py-genlayer-multi and py-lib-genlayer-std change. Downstream PRs pin this branch by commit; after merge they need a re-pin, and Studio needs a GenVM release tag

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified how external messages select fee allocations, handle unmatched or exhausted candidates, and use wildcard guards in pinned allocation trees.
    • Documented descendant funding for internal messages and deployments, including grant limits, budget rules, validation errors, and fee metering.
    • Updated build troubleshooting to use saved logs instead of rerunning failed builds, and clarified how to find the correct GenVM test run.
    • Clarified when contributor hashes must be regenerated and added descriptions of related fee errors and manager API allocation requirements.

Line 160 requires descendants to be absent unless use_balance is set. Lines 235–237 allow the field to be absent or null for sender-funded messages. Change the requirement to “absent or null unless use_balance is set” so the contract is consistent.

Specify the error for a zero-budget external allocation.

Line 241 requires every node to have a non-zero budget. Lines 245–247 also require an external allocation budget to be a positive multiple. A zero-budget external node therefore matches both rules, while Lines 297–303 map zero node budgets and invalid external allocation parameters to different VM errors. Specify which error applies so implementations return a consistent result.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use a default log directory when TMPDIR is unset.

When TMPDIR is unset, this path becomes /ninja.log. An unprivileged build can fail when tee cannot create that file. With pipefail, the command can report failure even when Ninja succeeds. The removed wrapper used mktemp for its capture file instead of constructing this root-level path.

Suggested fix

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clarify that “non-zero” refers to the allocation budget.

The SDK derives an all-zero call key for calldata shorter than four bytes. The phrase “non-zero exact (address, call key) allocation” can therefore be read as excluding an exact allocation with an all-zero call key. That reading can select a broader wildcard instead of the valid exact allocation. Change the wording to identify the budget explicitly.

Suggested fix
-GenVM orders matching candidates from the non-zero exact ``(address, call key)``
-allocation through the same address's call-key wildcard to host-provided recipient

.agents/skills/build/SKILL.md:12-14
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Create the Ninja log at a writable temporary path.

When TMPDIR is unset, "$TMPDIR/ninja.log" becomes /ninja.log. An unprivileged developer may not be able to create that file. tee then fails, and pipefail makes the command fail even when Ninja succeeds. The previous wrapper used mktemp, so retain that behavior.

Suggested fix
-  `bash -o pipefail -c 'ninja -C build all/bin 2>&1 | tee "$TMPDIR/ninja.log" | tail -n 40'`;
+  `bash -o pipefail -c 'log=$(mktemp) || exit 1; ninja -C build all/bin 2>&1 | tee "$log" | tail -n 40; status=$?; printf "Ninja log: %s\n" "$log"; exit "$status"'`;
