Closes #13
Closes #14
Closes #15
Closes #16

  1. manager socket: two response-ordering deviations from the protocol #13: part 1 here (fix(manager): answer run before its semantic validation #53 + lock-order follow-up); part 2 landed earlier
  2. two test-coverage gaps: schema parity checks names only, routed runner pins never refresh #15: part 1 here (fix(manager): document the calldata types a host has to encode #51: schema types fixed, parity test comments narrowed to name-only); part 2 landed earlier

Train of manager socket fixes; takes in #48, #49, #51 and #53 by @HusseinAdeiza, reworked after review

Changes

  1. Cross-major tests share 1 manager harness in gvm_extra (test(cross-major): extract the shared manager harness into gvm_extra #49)
  2. Manager API schema matches what the server encodes (fix(manager): document the calldata types a host has to encode #51), and the socket spec matches the server
  3. A run failing after the spawn reports finished, not failed_to_start (fix(manager): report a spawned run as finished, not failed_to_start #48)
  4. run answers with an id before its semantic validation; module locks move into supervision (fix(manager): answer run before its semantic validation #53)
  5. A retried run acks a failed start only if it created that run; a rejected set_permits keeps throttling intact

Notes

  1. Failed starts are retained differently by transport: HTTP keeps one until its token is released, the socket acks it once reported. Documented in the impl-spec
  2. Module-lock contention has no system test: existing fixtures cannot make it deterministic

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation

    • Expanded the manager API reference with clearer request and response schemas, status values, error responses, and permit-count descriptions.
    • Clarified run lifecycle behavior, including startup failures, cancellation, artifact retrieval, retries, and delivery of status notifications.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Runs that fail before the executor starts are now distinguished from runs that fail after starting.
    • A broken pipe while sending execution data no longer causes the run to fail.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The manager now reserves run IDs synchronously and performs module checks and lock acquisition during asynchronous supervision. Run outcomes distinguish failures before and after executor spawn. The API and socket specifications update request schemas, response contracts, artifact availability, and lifecycle notification descriptions.

Changes

Manager run lifecycle and contracts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Run and message request contracts
docs/website/src/impl-spec/appendix/manager-api.yaml
The API specification adds and tightens module, prompt, executor, message, and run-request schemas. It defines calldata mappings, message fee parameters, allocation constraints, deadline limits, and unsafe override fields.
API routes and response contracts
docs/website/src/impl-spec/appendix/manager-api.yaml
The specification updates module, status, run, shutdown, artifact, log-level, and permit endpoints. It adds not-found responses and describes execution metadata and startup-failure retention rules.
Typed module locks and execution contexts
implementation/src/manager/modules.rs, implementation/src/manager/run.rs
get_module_locks now returns guards for both module states or None when either module is absent. ModuleLocks provides handlers and creates execution contexts from the guarded states.
Synchronous run reservation and entry points
implementation/src/manager/run.rs, implementation/src/manager/handlers.rs, implementation/src/manager/socket.rs
Ctx::start now returns the run ID and whether it created a reservation, then starts supervision without awaiting it. HTTP and socket entry points start runs directly; the HTTP handler acknowledges a newly reserved ID after startup failure.
Supervision validation and run outcomes
implementation/src/manager/run.rs
Supervision checks module availability and manager-owned host data before launch, then acquires module locks when required. Failures publish FailedToStart before executor spawn and finish with an Exited cause after spawn; cancellation releases permits and module locks.
Permit updates and executor I/O
implementation/src/manager/run.rs
set_permits resets throttling before checking the requested minimum. Closed stdout and stderr semaphores are treated as invariant violations; broken stdin pipes do not fail the run, while other write errors retain failure handling.
Socket run and artifact lifecycle
docs/website/src/impl-spec/appendix/manager-socket.rst
The socket specification updates message tagging, startup and cancellation outcomes, artifact retrieval conditions, and terminal notification guarantees. It describes replay through a retained token and notes that manager shutdown can close connections before notification delivery.

A run that needs modules and is waiting for an execution permit can delay module stop and restart, and with them other module-dependent runs. The earlier code had a similar lock-hold window, but reordering the steps would remove it. The other findings are small documentation corrections. The change can merge once the owner is aware of the locking behavior.

Review comments at @docs/website/src/impl-spec/appendix/manager-api.yaml:
- Around line 196-201: Complete the `/genvm/run` description after “Socket
startup failures remain retained” by specifying that they remain so until `ack`
or the retention TTL expires, and end the sentence with a period.

Review comments at @docs/website/src/impl-spec/appendix/manager-socket.rst:
- Around line 233-234: Update the `queued` lifecycle-state description to say
that startup validation or permit acquisition may still be pending, rather than
implying the run is necessarily waiting for a permit. Keep its non-terminal
status and `attach` snapshot context.

Review comments at @implementation/src/manager/run.rs:
- Around line 2303-2320: In the run flow, acquire execution permits before
obtaining module read locks so runs waiting for capacity do not block module
stop, restart, or later readers. Reorder the permit acquisition and the
`modules_lock` acquisition in the code around `check_top_level_request`; if that
check fails after permits are acquired, release the permits before calling
`fail_to_start` and returning.
