📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change validates that transaction sender values match authenticated callers. The parser rejects mismatched calldata senders, and consensus contracts reject unauthorized nonzero sender values. ChangesSender Authorization
Priority: ⬆️ High Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: High Merge Risk: 🔴 Critical · up to The submission guard added here relies on a registry that any caller can write to, so an attacker can still register their own address and submit transactions that appear to come from another user. Authorization-sensitive contract logic such as owner-only methods and per-user balances remains spoofable, so the registration entry points should be restricted before this is merged. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

Authorization Bypass
Reachability: External
Exploitability: Trivial
CWE: CWE-863 — Incorrect Authorization
Restrict internal-message processing to trusted consensus callers.
emitTransactionAccepted and emitTransactionFinalized let any caller supply internalMessages. _processInternalMessages marks each supplied recipient as a ghost, then creates a transaction with the supplied sender. An attacker can therefore register an arbitrary address and create a pending transaction with any sender address, bypassing addTransaction's sender check. Restrict these entry points to trusted consensus callers and validate recipients against trusted ghost-factory state before calling _storeGhost.

… the verified signer `addTransaction`'s `_sender` argument was accepted from the caller with no check against who actually authorized the transaction, letting anyone submit a call that GenVM attributes to an arbitrary victim address: - Solidity: `ConsensusMain._addTransaction` / `ConsensusMainWithFees._addTransaction` only defaulted `_sender` to `msg.sender` when it was `address(0)`, but otherwise accepted whatever the caller passed. The external `addTransaction` entry points now reject `_sender != msg.sender` unless the caller is a registered ghost contract relaying its own caller (the legitimate case used by `GhostBlueprint.addTransaction`). - Python: `TransactionParser.get_genlayer_transaction` used `rollup_transaction.data.args.sender` (decoded straight from calldata) as the Intelligent Contract caller, instead of `rollup_transaction.from_address` (the signer already verified by `transaction_has_valid_signature`). It now rejects the transaction when the two disagree. Every auth check that trusts `gl.message.sender_address` (token gates, owner-only methods, per-user balances) was bypassable through this gap; the real signer only paid the gas. Re: the critical merge-risk note above (`ghostContracts` registry being writable by any caller) — good catch, but that's a separate, broader issue than what #1768 (and this PR) targets. `ghostContracts` is currently populated via `_storeGhost`, reachable from the unauthenticated `emitTransactionAccepted` / `emitTransactionFinalized` entry points (no access-control modifier on either). An attacker could in principle get their own address registered as a ghost and use that to satisfy this PR's This PR closes the specific bug in #1768: `_sender` being trusted from calldata with no check against `msg.sender`/the verified signer, in both the externally-reachable `addTransaction` entry points (including the fee-aware fallback I found needed the same fix while rebasing) and the Python backend's transaction decoding. I'd rather not bundle #1767's fix into this PR — flagging it here so maintainers can prioritize it separately. |
Fixes #1768
What
ConsensusMain.addTransaction/ConsensusMainWithFees.addTransaction: reject_sender != msg.senderunless the caller is a registered ghost contract relaying its own caller (the legitimateGhostBlueprint.addTransactionrelay pattern).ConsensusMain._addFeeAwareTransaction(thefallback()-routed v0.6 fee-aware entry point, added upstream after this branch was first opened): same check, applied tosenderWord.TransactionParser.get_genlayer_transaction: use the verified rollup signer (rollup_transaction.from_address) instead of the unverifiedargs.sendercalldata field; raiseInvalidTransactionErroron mismatch. Why
_senderwas accepted from the caller with no check against who actually signed the transaction. Anyone could sign a valid transaction from their own address while setting_senderto a victim's address, which then became the Intelligent Contract caller (gl.message.sender_address) — bypassing every auth check that trusts it (token gates, owner-only methods, per-user balances). The real signer only paid gas. While rebasing ontov0.123-devI found the same unchecked pattern had been reintroduced by the new fee-aware fallback entrypoint, so that's fixed here too.Testing done
tests/unit/test_transactions_parser.pycovering the matching-sender (legitimate) and spoofed-sender (rejected) cases.v0.123-dev:1580 passed, 7 skipped(pre-existing skips, unrelated),black --checkclean.npx hardhat compile/hardhat tests — this repo's committedhardhat/package.jsonpinshardhat-deploy@^2.0.0, which requireshardhat@^3.1.8+rocketh, whilehardhat.config.jsanddeploy/001_deploy_fixture.jsare written for the old CommonJS/v1-style API. This mismatch is pre-existing and unrelated to this change (thehardhat-testCI job is already commented out in.github/workflows/backend_integration_tests_pr.yml). I verified the Solidity change by careful manual review instead — tracing every call site of_addTransactionin both contracts to confirm the new check doesn't affect the internal ghost-to-ghost message relay paths (_processMessages/_processInternalMessages/addInternalMessageTransaction), only the externally-reachableaddTransactionand fee-aware fallback entry points.Decisions made
addTransactionfunctions (and the fee-aware fallback) rather than the shared internal_addTransactionhelper, because the internal message-relay paths legitimately call_addTransactionwith_sender≠msg.sender(a validator finalizing a transaction, relaying on behalf of a ghost) — putting the check in the internal helper would have broken that.ghostContractsregistry this PR's carve-out relies on is itself writable by any caller today, via the unauthenticatedemitTransactionAccepted/emitTransactionFinalizedentry points. That's tracked separately as Consensus Solidity: unauthenticated internal-message emit helpers, ungated Transactions lifecycle, and ungated ConsensusManager seed writes #1767 and is a larger, separate fix (gating those entry points, validating ghost registration) — intentionally not bundled into this PR, which targets the narrower ConsensusMain.addTransaction trusts caller-supplied _sender over msg.sender; Studio persists it as the Intelligent Contract caller #1768 sender-spoofing bug.Checks
User facing release notes
Fixes a bug where a transaction's sender/caller identity could be spoofed: the actual signer (who pays gas) and the address seen by the Intelligent Contract as the caller could differ, bypassing any contract logic that gates behavior by caller address.
