Summary

1. Bare except: catches SystemExit/KeyboardInterrupt (worker_service.py:591)

The bare except: clause catches SystemExit and KeyboardInterrupt in addition to regular exceptions. This silently swallows signals meant to terminate the process, preventing clean shutdown. Changed to except Exception:.

2. Silent fallback to non-checksummed address (accounts_manager.py:47,69)

to_checksum_address() failures were silently swallowed, causing non-checksummed addresses to be used for DB lookups. Since Ethereum address comparison is case-sensitive on checksums, this creates inconsistent address casing and potential duplicate entries or failed lookups. Now raises ValueError on failure.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid account addresses are now rejected with a clear error instead of being processed.
    • Validator selection now reports an error when all validator stakes are zero.
    • Validator selection uses a fresh random generator when one is not provided, improving consistency between requests.
    • Health checks now handle expected monitoring errors without suppressing system-level interruptions.

Two bugs in get_validators_for_transaction():

1. ZeroDivisionError when all stakes are zero (genlayerlabs#1732):
Added explicit check for total_stake == 0 with a descriptive
   ValueError before the probability calculation.

2. Mutable default argument for rng (genlayerlabs#1733):
   Changed rng=np.random.default_rng(seed=...) to rng=None with
lazy initialization inside the function. The previous default
was evaluated once at import time and shared across all calls,
   making validator selection predictable.

Fixes genlayerlabs#1732
Fixes genlayerlabs#1733
to_checksum_address() could throw on malformed addresses. The bare
except Exception: pass silently swallowed the error, causing the
function to continue with an invalid contract_address. This could
lead to missed ContractSnapshot creation for valid deployments.

Changed to catch only (ValueError, TypeError) and return None early,
so callers can handle the invalid address case explicitly.
1. worker_service.py:591 — bare 'except:' catches SystemExit and
KeyboardInterrupt, preventing clean process termination. Changed
   to 'except Exception:'.

2. accounts_manager.py:47,69 — to_checksum_address() failures were
silently swallowed, causing non-checksummed addresses to be used
for DB lookups. This creates inconsistent address casing and
potential duplicate entries. Now raises ValueError on failure.

This PR targeted main, which is only the default/static branch.

I retargeted it to v0.123-dev, the active development branch. Pushes to v0.123-dev automatically fast-forward main.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes narrow exception handling for address conversion and health metrics. Validator selection now creates per-call RNG instances and rejects zero total stake. Unit tests cover zero-stake validation and RNG isolation.

Changes

Consensus validation and exception handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Address validation boundaries
backend/consensus/base.py, backend/database_handler/accounts_manager.py
Invalid checksum conversion now returns None in contract_snapshot_factory or raises ValueError in account operations. Other exception types are no longer silently swallowed in contract_snapshot_factory.
Validator selection validation
backend/consensus/vrf.py, tests/unit/test_vrf.py
get_validators_for_transaction creates an RNG when no RNG is provided and raises ValueError when all stakes are zero. Tests cover both behaviors.
Health-check exception boundary
backend/consensus/worker_service.py
The health endpoint now catches Exception instead of all base exceptions during psutil metrics collection.

Explanation

The description explains two key changes and their reasons, but it does not follow the repository template. It omits the issue reference, What, Why, Testing done, Decisions made, Checks, Reviewing tips, and User facing release notes sections. It also does not describe the VRF and contract snapshot changes included in the objectives.

Resolution

Rewrite the description with the required template sections. Add the issue reference, complete What and Why sections, document testing, record implementation decisions, complete the checklist, add reviewing tips and user-facing release notes, and describe the VRF and contract snapshot changes.

Handle the nullable factory result.

For a non-SEND transaction with a legacy snapshot and an invalid to_address, contract_snapshot_factory returns None. The hydration path then reads fresh.balance and can raise AttributeError. Make the factory and its Callable annotations return ContractSnapshot | None, then handle None in TransactionContext before reading .balance.

Pass consensus VRF output to validator selection.

get_validators_for_transaction uses a timestamp-seeded generator when rng is omitted. Identical validator sets can therefore produce identical selections within the same second. Pass consensus VRF-derived randomness through the appeal and timeout-recovery call sites.

Add return type annotations to the test functions.

Add -> None to both test function declarations. The coding guidelines require type hints in all Python code. As per coding guidelines, **/*.py: “Include type hints in all Python code”.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make the RNG isolation test distinguish generator reuse.

Both calls return one validator when the RNG is shared. This assertion therefore passes with the previous mutable default RNG.

Spy on np.random.default_rng or inject a factory. Assert that the function creates two separate generators.

decode_method_call_data() assumed the RLP long list header is always
2 bytes (prefix + 1 byte length). When payload >= 256 bytes, the
header becomes 3+ bytes (0xF8 + N where N = byte count of length).

Fixed by calculating the actual number of length bytes from the
prefix byte: num_length_bytes = raw_bytes[0] - 0xF7.

Also added guard for empty input to prevent IndexError.
