Summary

Fixes #1732
Fixes #1733

Bug 1: ZeroDivisionError when all stakes are zero (#1732)

get_validators_for_transaction() calculated probabilities = [stake / total_stake ...] without checking if total_stake is zero. When all validators have zero stake, this crashes with ZeroDivisionError.

Fix: Added explicit check for total_stake == 0 with a descriptive ValueError before the probability calculation.

Bug 2: Mutable default argument for rng (#1733)

The rng parameter defaulted to np.random.default_rng(seed=int(datetime.now().timestamp())) — this expression is evaluated once at import time, so the same Generator instance is shared across all calls. This makes validator selection predictable and can cause state corruption between concurrent calls.

Fix: Changed to rng: np.random.Generator | None = None with lazy initialization inside the function body.

Tests

  • test_get_validators_zero_stake_raises — verifies ValueError on zero stakes
  • test_get_validators_rng_not_shared_between_calls — verifies fresh generator per call

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved validator selection when no random generator is provided.
    • Added clear error handling for transactions where all validator stakes are zero.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for zero-stake validation.
    • Added coverage confirming independent random selection across calls.

Two bugs in get_validators_for_transaction():

1. ZeroDivisionError when all stakes are zero (genlayerlabs#1732):
Added explicit check for total_stake == 0 with a descriptive
   ValueError before the probability calculation.

2. Mutable default argument for rng (genlayerlabs#1733):
   Changed rng=np.random.default_rng(seed=...) to rng=None with
lazy initialization inside the function. The previous default
was evaluated once at import time and shared across all calls,
   making validator selection predictable.

This PR targeted main, which is only the default/static branch.

I retargeted it to v0.123-dev, the active development branch. Pushes to v0.123-dev automatically fast-forward main.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The VRF validator selection function now creates a random generator per call when none is provided and raises a ValueError when all validator stakes are zero. Unit tests cover both changes.

get_validators_for_transaction now accepts an optional np.random.Generator, creates one when omitted, and rejects zero total stake with ValueError. Tests verify both behaviors.

Validator selection remains predictable when callers use the default RNG path, potentially making consensus outcomes repeatable within a second. The accompanying test would not catch a return to shared or predictable default RNG behavior, so this should be corrected before merge.

Weak Cryptography

CWE: CWE-338 — Use of Cryptographically Weak Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG)

Do not seed consensus randomness from wall-clock seconds.

Consensus callers omit rng, so this default path is used for validator selection. Identical inputs can produce the same sequence within one second. Use VRF-derived randomness or require a caller-supplied VRF-backed generator.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make the RNG test detect shared defaults.

The test only checks result lengths. The former module-level generator would also pass these assertions. Patch backend.consensus.vrf.np.random.default_rng and assert that it is called once per function invocation, or inject a factory that returns distinct generator instances.
