Closes #1721. Added a failing-first regression test (test_committing_validator_concurrency.py) proving the semaphore previously ignored any configuration and was hardcoded to 8.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added configurable concurrency limits for validator processing.
    • The limit can be adjusted through the CONSENSUS_VALIDATOR_CONCURRENCY setting.
    • Defaults to 8 when the setting is missing or invalid.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Invalid or non-positive concurrency values now safely fall back to the default.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for configured, default, and invalid concurrency settings.

…#1721)

CommittingState hardcoded asyncio.Semaphore(8) for concurrent validator
execution, causing ~10x slowdown for large validator committees (47+).
Adds CONSENSUS_VALIDATOR_CONCURRENCY env var following the existing
CONSENSUS_VALIDATOR_EXEC_TIMEOUT_SECONDS naming pattern in this file.
Default of 8 is unchanged when unset or given an invalid/non-positive value.

This PR targeted main, which is only the default/static branch.

I retargeted it to v0.123-dev, the active development branch. Pushes to v0.123-dev automatically fast-forward main.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The consensus validator execution limit is now configurable through CONSENSUS_VALIDATOR_CONCURRENCY. Valid positive integers override the default of 8. Invalid, non-positive, or unset values use the default. Tests cover configuration and enforcement.

Validator concurrency configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Concurrency configuration and semaphore wiring
backend/consensus/base.py
The module defines the default concurrency value, validates CONSENSUS_VALIDATOR_CONCURRENCY, and uses the result for the committing validator semaphore.
Concurrency behavior tests
tests/unit/consensus/test_committing_validator_concurrency.py
Tests verify the configured limit, the default value, and fallback behavior for invalid values.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9e9ac

The PR changes validator concurrency from a fixed limit to a deployment-controlled value while preserving the default of 8. An excessively high setting could increase simultaneous validator workloads and affect consensus-worker availability, so the change is mergeable with explicit owner awareness or follow-up to constrain or operationally manage the maximum.

Explanation

The changes satisfy issue #1721. The hardcoded semaphore is replaced with a configurable limit, CONSENSUS_VALIDATOR_CONCURRENCY is supported, the default remains 8, invalid values fall back to 8, and bounded concurrency is preserved. Tests cover the configuration behavior and concurrency limit.

Friendly ping: the CI runs for this PR were waiting on first-time-contributor workflow approval and expired after 30 days without running, so the red checks are approval timeouts, not test failures. Could a maintainer approve the workflows when convenient? Happy to rebase or adjust anything first.

Closing this: v0.123-dev already makes the limit configurable through CONSENSUS_VALIDATOR_MAX_CONCURRENT (backend/consensus/base.py:152), which covers #1721. One difference from this PR: a non-integer value there raises ValueError when the module is imported, where this PR fell back to the default of 8. Happy to send that as a small follow-up against v0.123-dev if it's useful.
