The audit finding reproduced on the current branch: the original binary accepted all 12 oversized HTTP/2 cases. I added per-stream limits of 100 decoded fields and 64 KiB, covering pseudo-headers and trailers. An oversized stream is reset while the connection remains usable. The audit overstated retained-memory growth from repeated HPACK references; those references replace the same table entry, though they still amplify processing work.

Verification passed: tests/integration/.venv/Scripts/python.exe -m pytest tests/integration/scenarios/in_http/tests/test_http2_header_limits.py -q --tb=short --basetemp=build/header-tests-fixed -o log_cli=false — 32 passed; ctest --test-dir build -R 'flb-it-http_server|flb-rt-in_http' --output-on-failure — 2 passed. The repository commit-prefix checker passed. Platform memory checker: not run; this Windows host has neither Valgrind nor macOS Leaks.

The clean checkout now has two DCO-signed commits: 573f91133 for the fix and 1163f08d7 for the regression tests.

Testing
Before we can approve your change; please submit the following in a comment:

  • Example configuration file for the change
  • Debug log output from testing the change
  • Attached Valgrind output that shows no leaks or memory corruption was found

If this is a change to packaging of containers or native binaries then please confirm it works for all targets.

  • Run local packaging test showing all targets (including any new ones) build.
  • Set ok-package-test label to test for all targets (requires maintainer to do).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • HTTP/2 requests are limited to 65,536 bytes of decoded headers and 100 header fields per stream, including pseudo-headers and trailers. Requests that exceed either limit are rejected.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Rejected oversized HTTP/2 requests no longer prevent subsequent requests from being handled. HTTP/1 health checks remain available when HTTP/2 is enabled, and invalid headers are rejected without disrupting the connection.

📝 Walkthrough

The HTTP/2 server advertises a 65,536-byte decoded header-list limit and enforces that limit and a 100-field per-stream limit. Integration tests cover cleartext and TLS listeners, header and trailer limits, stream resets, subsequent requests, and HTTP/1 health requests. The data-chunk callback no longer queues requests based on matching body length to content length.

Changes: HTTP/2 header limits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Header budget state and limits
include/fluent-bit/flb_http_common.h, include/fluent-bit/http_server/flb_http_server_http2.h, src/flb_http_common.c
flb_http_stream now tracks incoming header size and count, initialized to zero. The HTTP/2 budgets are 65,536 bytes and 100 fields per stream, including pseudo-headers and trailers.
Advertise and enforce HTTP/2 limits
src/http_server/flb_http_server_http2.c, tests/integration/scenarios/in_http/tests/test_http2_header_limits.py
The server advertises the header-list limit and accounts for valid and invalid header fields before processing them. It resets streams that exceed the size or count budget. Integration tests cover limit boundaries, rejected streams, subsequent requests, HTTP/1 health checks, and trailer limits over cleartext and TLS.
Body completion callback handling
src/http_server/flb_http_server_http2.c
The data-chunk callback no longer queues a request when accumulated body length matches content_length.

This change adds limits on HTTP/2 header count and size and resets streams that exceed them. Ordinary requests are not expected to be affected. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the supplied review evidence.

Review comments at @src/http_server/flb_http_server_http2.c:
- Line 558: Update the header-budget check in the inbound HEADERS handling so it
still runs for an open stream marked HTTP_STREAM_STATUS_READY after DATA,
including when the request is already queued; reset the stream if either budget
is exceeded. Add a test that sends a complete DATA frame without END_STREAM
followed by oversized trailers.
- Line 558: Register an invalid-header callback alongside http2_header_callback
so nghttp2 1.67.0 system builds account for invalid regular fields that the
normal callback ignores. Apply the same per-stream header budget using
stream->incoming_header_count and reset the stream when the limit is exceeded;
add coverage confirming that behavior.
