Deeply nested MessagePack records can exhaust an output coroutine's stack during JSON serialization. Separately, exact-fit JSON buffers are rejected, and yyjson input conversion can exceed the MessagePack nesting budget. This PR combines the three complementary fixes.

The changes are rebased onto master in eight scoped commits, without merge or follow-up fix commits. Ugur's contributions retain his authorship, author dates, and sign-offs. The final #12313 implementation and its return-contract corrections are consolidated into code, internal-test, and integration-test commits. Source commits for #12444 are 55e50783790e26af90b9bc907bc6cbaa6210e05f and 3faf785fe1a67275294bd2a476c82191549e9e00; #12313 was reviewed through 8d39b03b76c85c29fcfe3481a196da6058be87ba, with its merge commit excluded.

There are no configuration changes. Public JSON conversion still returns a negative result for an insufficient buffer; only the private helper distinguishes buffer exhaustion from terminal errors. Exact-fit capacity succeeds. Integer, boolean, nil, and floating-point map keys are quoted as JSON string keys; container and malformed keys remain terminal errors. Output conversion truncates non-empty containers beyond 512 levels to JSON null. Input conversion enforces the MessagePack nesting budget (64 for the bundled build, 32 for Ubuntu's system MessagePack package), retaining configured-parser fallback behavior. The converter and depth tests explicitly include the MessagePack nesting definitions so system-library builds compile. Ingestor tests use the shared strict memory-check harness.

Validation on Linux, from /tmp/fluent-bit-pack-json-combined:

cmake --build build -j8 --target fluent-bit-bin flb-it-pack flb-it-utils flb-it-parser_json flb-it-record_accessor flb-it-msgpack_append_message flb-rt-out_loki
ctest --test-dir build -R '^flb-(it-(pack|utils|parser_json|record_accessor|msgpack_append_message)|rt-out_loki)$' --output-on-failure
valgrind --leak-check=full --show-leak-kinds=all --errors-for-leak-kinds=all --error-exitcode=99 --log-file=/tmp/pack-review-pack-memory.log ./build/bin/flb-it-pack
FLUENT_BIT_BINARY=/tmp/fluent-bit-pack-json-combined/build/bin/fluent-bit /home/edsiper/c/fluent-bit/tests/integration/.venv/bin/python -m pytest tests/integration/scenarios/security_ingestors tests/integration/scenarios/out_loki -q
FLUENT_BIT_BINARY=/tmp/fluent-bit-pack-json-combined/build/bin/fluent-bit VALGRIND=1 VALGRIND_STRICT=1 /home/edsiper/c/fluent-bit/tests/integration/.venv/bin/python -m pytest tests/integration/scenarios/security_ingestors tests/integration/scenarios/out_loki -q

Results: all six CTest suites pass. All 36 pack tests pass under Valgrind with zero errors and no leaks. All 25 integration cases pass normally and under strict Valgrind; every integration memory log reports zero errors and all heap blocks freed. Full PR-range commit-prefix lint, DCO, and whitespace checks pass.

System-library verification uses Ubuntu 24.04's MessagePack 4.0.0 package extracted under /tmp/fluent-bit-system-msgpack, configured with FLB_PREFER_SYSTEM_LIB_MSGPACK=On. The executable and pack tests build and link against that library. Both affected files also pass GCC and Clang syntax checks using the system-library compilation flags, without a command-line nesting-macro definition. Nine focused capacity, nesting, scalar-key, small-stack, and error-handling tests pass normally and under Valgrind with zero errors and no leaks.

Known system-library test limitation: the existing json_pack_empty_array fixture exceeds the system library's 32-level budget. The failure was previously reproduced with master's original converter when unpacking that fixture; it is separate from these changes. No bundled libraries were modified.

The nested Loki fixture uses 14 map/array pairs, leaving room for the leaf, record map, and event envelope within the default system-library nesting limit. Both Loki scenarios also pass normally and under strict Valgrind against the system-MessagePack build:

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

JSON conversion now checks nesting depth, validates MessagePack values, and distinguishes conversion errors from buffer-capacity retries. Tests cover depth limits, network-input recovery, and nested records in Loki.

Changes

JSON packing and recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bound JSON-to-MessagePack conversion depth
src/flb_pack.c, tests/internal/pack.c
The converter checks container depth and pack failures. It rejects oversized input lengths and frees resources when conversion fails. Tests cover depth boundaries and serialization on small coroutine stacks.
Validate and serialize MessagePack values
src/flb_pack.c, tests/internal/pack.c
The converter uses iterative traversal with a depth limit and validates strings, binary data, extensions, containers, and map keys. Buffer helpers distinguish terminal errors from insufficient capacity. Tests cover depth boundaries, malformed values, and buffer retries.
Test nested-record recovery through network inputs
tests/integration/scenarios/security_ingestors/tests/test_security_ingestors.py
Integration tests send deeply nested payloads through network input plugins. They check that the process remains running, handles a following marker, and does not log the nested payload.
Test nested-record serialization in Loki
tests/integration/scenarios/out_loki/config/out_loki_long_unicode.yaml, tests/integration/scenarios/out_loki/tests/test_out_loki_001.py
The Loki scenario sets a coroutine stack size of 24576. Its integration test checks that 200 records retain their nested object.

After this change, a single record whose map uses a numeric, boolean, or null key can fail JSON formatting for its entire batch. Such records can come from forward clients or Lua filters, and those batches were previously delivered. The affected batches are retried and may eventually be dropped. The new Loki test will also fail on builds that use the system MessagePack library. Handle scalar keys and adjust the test before merging.

Preserve scalar map keys during MessagePack-to-JSON conversion.

msgpack2json now rejects every map key except STR, BIN, and EXT. Forward records and Lua filter results can preserve scalar MessagePack keys. The json_lines path returns NULL when any record conversion fails. The JSON-array path also returns NULL when conversion of the complete array fails. No per-record fallback exists.

The merge-base converter rendered scalar keys through the generic converter, such as {1:null}. Although that output was not valid JSON, this change prevents the formatted chunk from being delivered.

Keep the terminal error for container keys and malformed data. Quote scalar non-string keys before and after msgpack2json_scalar.

Suggested fix

-                        key->type != MSGPACK_OBJECT_EXT) {

                         errno = EINVAL;
                         ret = -1;
                         goto done;
                     }

Add coverage for integer, boolean, and nil keys. Keep terminal-error coverage for container and malformed keys.

Keep this nesting below the default MessagePack stack or gate the test.

The tail JSON parser converts each record to MessagePack and immediately unpacks it. This record contains about 50 nested containers: 24 map-and-array pairs, the initial leaf map, and the outer record map. A MessagePack build with the default 32-entry stack rejects it before delivery.

The bundled build sets the stack size to 64, but system-library builds can retain the 32-entry default. Use a depth valid for that build or gate this test when the system library does not provide the larger stack.

remains within the default MessagePack stack limit, including the initial and
outer maps; preserve the test’s nested-record behavior without requiring a
larger-stack system library.
