Documents the namespace and pod name validation added to the Kubernetes filter in v5.1.4 (fluent/fluent-bit commit 06237cc3c, "filter_kubernetes: validate captured namespace and pod names").

Changes

  • Add a v5.1.4 note to the Custom regular expressions section of pipeline/filters/kubernetes.md
  • Document the validation rules: namespace names must be DNS labels (up to 63 characters), pod names must be DNS subdomains (up to 253 characters), lowercase alphanumeric characters and - only, plus . for pod names
  • Document that invalid captures log invalid Kubernetes namespace or pod name and the record passes through without Kubernetes metadata

Source references

  • plugins/filter_kubernetes/kube_meta.c: kube_name_valid() and its call in parse_regex_tag_data()
  • plugins/filter_kubernetes/kubernetes.c: a failed metadata lookup returns FLB_FILTER_NOTOUCH

Notes

  • Draft until the v5.1.4 release is published.

📝 Walkthrough

The Kubernetes filter documentation now describes validation for namespace and pod names captured by custom regex patterns in v5.1.4 and later.

Changes: Regex capture validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document validation rules
pipeline/filters/kubernetes.md
The documentation specifies allowed formats and length limits for captured namespace and pod names. Invalid captures produce a warning; records pass through without Kubernetes metadata, except records with use_journal enabled are dropped. The documentation identifies namespace_name and pod_name as required captures and container_name, container_hash, and docker_id as optional captures.

…validation

  - Add a v5.1.4 note to the custom regular expressions section
  - Document the DNS label and subdomain rules for captured namespace and pod names
  - Document the warning and pass-through behavior for invalid names
  - State that custom Regex_Parser must capture namespace_name and pod_name
  - Note optional container_name, container_hash, and docker_id captures
  - Records without use_journal pass through without Kubernetes metadata
  - Records with use_journal enabled are dropped
