Add unattended mode to the CVE remediation workflow - #157
The cve-fix package adds an unattended entry point for remediation, backports, and explicitly authorized Jira actions. The package now includes an /unattended command, a workflow skill, and a request/result contract. It also adds Python contract helpers and regression tests.
The unattended workflow defines bounded retries and execution time, rerun and resume checks, and machine-readable outcomes. Backports require a merged source PR and separate validation for each target branch. Jira writes require explicit authorization in the current request and evidence checks. The workflow creates draft PRs only; merges remain human-controlled. The attended workflow remains interactive.
The package’s guidelines, controller instructions, skill entry point, and README now describe how unattended and attended execution differ. The root AGENTS.md workflow listing also adds the new mode. CI now discovers tests in cve-fix/scripts.
Scope
No _shared/ files changed. The root AGENTS.md workflow listing changed, but the diff does not establish a broader change to cross-package conventions.
Add /unattended command for CVE remediation without interactive prompts.
Creates reviewable draft PRs for qualifying dependency changes with
human-only merges and bounded, idempotent execution.
New files:
- skills/unattended.md: orchestration skill with operation flows
(remediate, advance, backport, jira_action), phase overrides, feedback
loops, escalation handling, and human review handoff
- skills/unattended-contract.md: machine-readable request/result schema
documenting mandatory/optional inputs, result statuses, human decision
protocol, backport results, and scope deconfliction
- commands/unattended.md: thin command wrapper
- scripts/unattended.py: deterministic contract helpers for request
validation, result construction, scope conflict detection, state
tracking, stage resumption, and human decision validation
- scripts/test_unattended.py: 59 regression tests covering request
validation, context/branch derivation, result construction, human
decision acceptance/rejection/staleness, scope deconfliction, state
loading, stage resumption, idempotence, and CLI integration
Modified files:
- SKILL.md: version bump 0.6.1 -> 0.7.0, routing for /unattended
- guidelines.md: unattended mode rules (Jira read-only default, honest
outcomes, merge-first backports, per-branch evidence, code vs infra
errors, no mechanical test-file requirement for dependency patches)
- skills/controller.md: note that unattended mode bypasses controller
- README.md: unattended usage examples and artifact reference
- AGENTS.md: add unattended to cve-fix command list
- .github/workflows/test.yaml: add cve-fix test suite to CI

Address concrete source gaps identified by coordinator review:
A. Request validation: reject unknown fields, validate jira_action.action
type before frozenset membership (fixes TypeError on action=[]),
reject whitespace-only string refs, validate human_decisions and
reviewer_policy types, enforce operation-stage compatibility
(remediate+backport stage is invalid).
B. Human decision validation: require nonempty expected_scan_id and
expected_scope (empty string/dict no longer validates empty response),
require original_request for accepted decisions (identity/effect
binding), require authority_context with allowed_reviewer_ids for
reviewer eligibility (v1 caller-verified enforcement), reject
whitespace-only justification, validate ISO 8601 timestamp format,
require selected_effect for accepted decisions.
C. Portable decision handoff: validate-decision CLI now requires
--original-request and --scope (no longer optional), add
--authority-context for reviewer eligibility. All binding args
documented with runnable CLI examples in contract.
D. Result consistency: reject contradictory completed+FAIL evidence,
completed+blockers, completed+error, lifecycle_complete on non-completed
status, unknown operations, non-dict scope. next_permitted_operations
entries must be dicts with operation/prerequisite keys. Per-target
backport and jira failure detection on lifecycle_complete.
E. State/resume safety: use scan_valid (not just has_scan_file) in
prerequisite checks so malformed scan does not suggest patch stage.
Missing prereqs return needs_input status (exit 1) instead of silent
fallback. All resume results include authoritative=False.
F. Scope conflict robustness: handle non-dict JSON ([], "string", null,
42) in result files without crashing.
G. Backport preparation: document direct cherry-pick commands instead of
impossible backport.py prepare-only mode. Verify inputs before editing.
H. Finite time budget: define DEFAULT_TIME_BUDGET_SECONDS=7200 (2h),
update contract and skill defaults.
I. Import hygiene: remove gh/git/build_result fallback imports that
silently swap CLI behavior when _common is not on sys.path.
Add 49 regression tests covering all defects (142 total unattended tests,
593 total cve-fix tests). All CI-equivalent checks pass: structure
validation (PASS=289), markdownlint (0 issues), version validation
(PASSED), installer tests, and all unit test suites.

Address remaining verified defects from coordinator review:
1. Portable prior_result handoff: Add prior_result request field with
result/decision_requests/scan_snapshot structure. validate_prior_result
checks shape, matches snapshot scope to current request identifiers,
rejects stale approvals. match_decision_response_to_request binds
human_decisions IN responses to original OUT requests by decision_id.
Add full two-invocation roundtrip test: create decision OUT, discard
first artifact dir, build second request with prior_result + corrected
human response + caller eligibility, validate all binding args,
verify stale scan rejection.
2. Close approval bypasses in validate_human_decision_response:
- authority_context must be dict (not list/bool/string)
- original_request.decision_id must be nonempty string (not int)
- permitted_effects must be nonempty list for accepted decisions
(empty/missing no longer authorizes arbitrary effects)
- original_request.scan_id and scope cross-checked against current
- Timestamp uses actual datetime.fromisoformat parsing (not regex),
rejecting impossible dates like 2026-99-99T99:99:99Z
- All allowed_reviewer_ids entries must be nonempty strings
3. Harden make_result consistency checks:
- UNKNOWN/pending/ERROR/non-string validation_verdict rejected for
completed status
- next_permitted_operations requires both operation AND prerequisite
as nonempty strings
- Container type validation (stages_completed, evidence, etc.) rejects
non-list/non-dict instead of truthiness coercion
4. Scope conflict robustness:
- Handle malformed nested scope (cve_ids=[{}]) without crash by
filtering to string-only items
- scope=[] (non-dict) is skipped
- Same-package-only overlap returns _overlap_type=same_package_warning
(classified as warning vs CVE-overlap competing work)
5. Narrow reviewer_policy docs to v1 supported allowed_reviewer_ids
only. Remove unenforced required_role/min_reviewers/security-team
example. Add reviewer_policy validation in request validator.
6. Remove nonexistent 'explicit reconciliation stage' from skill doc.
Changed remote head now always returns needs_input.
Full CI evidence: structure validation PASS=289/FAIL=0, markdownlint
0 issues/329 files, skillsaw 0 errors/166 warnings (all baseline),
lychee 0 errors/93 links, version validation PASSED, installer OK,
all test suites pass (627 cve-fix, 33+328+228+9+204+18+7+5 others),
176 unattended tests including 34 new regression tests.

Fix 4 of 7 MEDIUM/LOW findings from fresh skill-reviewer:review:
- Link downstream-verification.md in /validate override section
- Remove undocumented "note" key from next_permitted_operations example
- Update scope deconfliction contract: local checks are non-authoritative
discovery; same-target exclusion by live PR identity not dir name
- Clarify Script Location: relative to installed skill file, not shell $0
Remaining 3 findings are quality suggestions (token budget, exclude_context
cleanup, baseline orphaned-file false positives) that do not affect
correctness or safety.

- Around line 121-124: Rewrite the Jira write-authorization rules in the
guidelines to distinguish modes: in attended mode, only /close authorizes
writes; in unattended mode, only an explicit jira_action in the current request
authorizes writes, limited to its named tickets and action. Do not treat /close
alone as unattended authorization or reject an authorized unattended
jira_action.
Review comments at @cve-fix/README.md:
- Around line 96-100: Add an unattended `jira_action` example to the README
alongside the remediation and backport examples, using the operation’s required
request shape so callers can invoke the documented skill correctly.
- Around line 93-94: Update the unattended command example to use the supported
remediate operation with its existing pr_url, replacing the unsupported advance
value.
- Around line 83-84: Update the unattended-mode description to qualify that it
creates a draft PR only for qualifying changes, rather than guaranteeing one for
every run. Keep the README phase description consistent with the behavior
implemented in SKILL.md and skills/, including outcomes that do not create a PR.
Review comments at @cve-fix/scripts/test_unattended.py:
- Around line 1798-1802: Make the package-warning assertion unconditional in the
test around check_scope_conflict: assert that result is not None, then verify

annotations on _resp and the other affected definitions resolve when evaluated
by typing.get_type_hints.
Review comments at @cve-fix/scripts/unattended.py:
- Around line 1337-1338: Update the argument parsing that populates `cve_ids`
and `packages` to trim surrounding whitespace from each comma-separated value
and omit empty entries, including trailing segments. Preserve the empty-list
result when either argument is absent.
- Around line 1124-1135: Update check_scope_conflict to retain the first
same-package warning and continue scanning all contexts for an exact CVE
overlap; return any exact CVE conflict immediately, and return the retained
warning only after the scan finds no CVE conflict.
- Around line 1030-1035: Remove the unused is_authorized assignment from the
decision-validation flow; keep _cmd_validate_decision’s existing authorization
calculation and return behavior unchanged.
- Around line 369-381: Update the current_scope_parts construction before
validate_prior_result to include a nonblank request base_branch when specified,
so prior-result validation rejects a snapshot with a different base branch.
Preserve the existing field comparisons and ensure any repo_path-to-repo
comparison uses an explicit mapping rather than comparing the names directly;
add a regression test for a request and snapshot with differing base_branch
values.
- Around line 108-112: Update make_result to allow status="completed" only for
documented successful validation verdicts, normalizing whitespace and case
before checking; remove the redundant lowercase denylist entries. In the
backport check, allow only documented successful child statuses, including when
lifecycle_complete is false, and reject all other statuses such as conflicted,
skipped, and pending.
Review comments at @cve-fix/skills/unattended-contract.md:
- Around line 273-280: Update the Result Status Values table so `completed` is
defined by operation: describe successful completion of `jira_action` without
requiring a PR, and limit the draft-PR-created-or-updated statement to
operations that create PRs. Preserve the other status meanings and caller
actions.
- Line 380: Update the documentation around the validate-decision command to
state that it must be run from the workflow package’s skills directory, so the
existing relative script path resolves correctly; leave the command unchanged.
- Around line 380-384: Update the `validate-decision` example so its `--scope`
matches the scope in the original request and response, including `packages`
when present; omit `packages` only when the original request has none.
Review comments at @cve-fix/skills/unattended.md:
- Around line 372-374: Update the retry-limit exhaustion status contract for
validation/review to allow error alongside failed and partial, while continuing
to exclude completed and record unresolved concerns.

## Package Versioning
When modifying a committed workflow or simple skill, update the version in that
package's `SKILL.md` frontmatter following semver. A new, uncommitted package may
remain at its initial `0.1.0` while it is being developed:
- **PATCH** (0.1.0 → 0.1.1): Typo fixes, wording clarification
without behavioral change, formatting
- **MINOR** (0.1.0 → 0.2.0): Adding/changing/reordering behavior,
modifying rules, changing templates, or adding workflow phases
- **MAJOR** (0.1.0 → 1.0.0): Removing or renaming public phases,
commands, configuration keys, or other package interfaces; incompatible restructuring

### Which files require a version bump
Behavioral files (the AI reads and executes these):
`SKILL.md` body, `guidelines.md`, `skills/*.md`, `commands/*.md`,
`templates/*`, `prompts/*`, `scripts/*`, `_shared/**/*.md`, and
root-level `.md` files in workflow directories that are read during
execution (e.g., `design/decomposition-review.md`). For simple skills, this
includes `skills/{skill-name}/SKILL.md`, `references/*`, `templates/*`,
`prompts/*`, `scripts/*`, and other files read or executed by the skill.

cve-fix/skills/unattended-contract.md: 3
117-118: Data Integrity & Integration
The comment's premise is incorrect. The contract does not define cross-invocation idempotency, but cve-fix/skills/unattended.md does. Its jira_action procedure requires a live read of existing comments before a comment write, and it treats a missing or errored read as a blocking condition. A rerun after an ambiguous timeout therefore has a deduplication check on the skill path, so the duplicate-comment failure is not established.
The contract file is less specific than the skill. It mentions ticket state only, not the comment read. That is a documentation precision point, not a defect that leads to duplicate Jira comments, so it does not support the requested major issue.
43-44: Security & Privacy
The overrides values are not shown to execute as shell input.
The contract validates only the object type. The inspected cve-fix code does not pass overrides values to a shell or subprocess. The phase-override recipe resolves skill files and does not read request values. The lint_command executor is in the bugfix workflow, not in cve-fix. The claimed path, from an unattended caller's overrides value to command execution on the runner, is not established.
61-64: Data Integrity & Integration
Operation-specific stage validation already prevents this ambiguity.
{"operation":"remediate","stage":"backport"} is rejected because backport is valid only for the backport operation. The backport operation also requires a merged source PR before proceeding.

Bind Jira writes to the validated execution path.
The skill requires request validation, current scope and merge/evidence gates, and successful live reads before a Jira mutation. The available implementation evidence does not show that the writer consumes those results. Ensure that validation, scope checks, and live-read failures block every direct Jira mutation.
1. prior_result base_branch binding (4472834644): Include explicit
request base_branch in current_scope_parts for prior_result snapshot
validation. Cross-branch approval mismatches are now caught. repo_path
(filesystem) is NOT equated with canonical repo scope key.
2. Completion allowlists (4472834621): Replace _INVALID_COMPLETION_VERDICTS
denylist with _VALID_COMPLETION_VERDICTS allowlist (PASS, FIXED,
NOT_AFFECTED). Normalize verdict whitespace/case before checking. Reject
blank, unknown, partial, and any non-allowlisted verdict. Replace
_FAILED_CHILD denylist with _VALID_COMPLETED_CHILD_STATUSES allowlist
(completed, merged, awaiting_review, awaiting_merge). Reject skipped,
pending, conflicted, blank child statuses even when lifecycle_complete
is False.
3. Scope conflict precedence (4472834692): Scan past first package-only
warning to find later exact CVE conflicts. Package warning is saved as
fallback; exact CVE overlap takes immediate precedence.
4. Unconditional warning assertion (4472834600): Assert result is not None
and check overlap type unconditionally in test_cve_ids_with_dict_elements.
20 new regression tests covering cross-branch mismatch, repo_path
non-equivalence, verdict normalization, blank verdict, partial/unknown
verdict, skipped/pending/conflicted/empty child statuses,
awaiting_merge/review acceptance, early-warning/later-exact fixture,
and warning-only/no-overlap scenarios.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Restrict _VALID_COMPLETION_VERDICTS to {PASS} only — FIXED and
NOT_AFFECTED are scanner verdicts (scan_verdict key), not aggregate
candidate-validation verdicts. Restrict _VALID_COMPLETED_CHILD_STATUSES
to {completed, merged} — awaiting_review/awaiting_merge are top-level
result statuses, not valid backport child outcomes per the schema.
Replace acceptance tests for Fixed/NOT_AFFECTED/awaiting_* with
rejection tests confirming they are not valid for completed status.
Add NOT_AFFECTED aggregate verdict rejection test.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
1. CSV normalization (4472834711): Strip whitespace from each token
and drop blank segments in check-scope --cve-ids/--packages CLI
parsing. Omitted args preserved as empty lists. 6 CLI regression
tests covering whitespace, trailing/repeated commas,
whitespace-only values, and preserved conflict detection.
2. Remove unused is_authorized (4472834669): Delete dead variable
assignment in validate_human_decision_response without changing
_cmd_validate_decision/action_authorized output behavior.
3. Import typing.Any (4472847429): Add `from typing import Any` and
`import typing` to test_unattended.py. 3 tests verify affected
annotations resolve via typing.get_type_hints.
4. Retry-exhaustion contract (4472834775): Add `error` alongside
`failed` and `partial` as valid retry-exhaustion statuses in
unattended.md. Retry exhaustion must never produce `completed`.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
1. Completed per operation (4472834727): Define what "completed" means
for each operation in unattended-contract.md. remediate may publish
qualifying draft changes; jira_action completes without PR; no-op/
no-code cases remain valid. Operation completion does not imply merge
or full lifecycle. All existing merge/evidence/human-review gates
still apply.
2. Validate-decision cwd (4472834742): Name cve-fix/skills/ as the
package directory for the relative ../scripts/ path in the example.
Does not change actual target checkout or installed consumer semantics.
3. Example scope completeness (4472834751): Include packages:
["golang.org/x/net"] in --scope example to match the full
original/response scope used in surrounding contract examples.
4. README jira_action example (4472834591): Replace invalid "advance"
operation example with valid jira_action request showing mandatory
operation/nested action/tickets/target_status fields. Validated
through actual CLI: exit=0 from validate-request.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
1. Command description (4472834495): Use unattended terminology and
cover all three operations: remediate, backport, explicitly
authorized jira_action.
2. Guidelines Jira distinction (4472834539): Separate attended /close
writes (user-authorized) from unattended writes (only explicit
current-request jira_action). Reusing /close path does not confer
unattended permission. Other operations remain Jira-read-only.
3. Existing-PR example (4472834581): Add valid remediate + pr_url
continuation example alongside existing jira_action example.
CLI-validated: exit=0, has_existing_ref=true.
4. Qualifying draft PR (4472834561): README clarifies draft publication
is only for qualifying changes; no-code/no-op/blocked outcomes
return without creating a PR.
5. Orphaned references (6638058088): Fix four bare guidelines.md
references in cve-fix/skills/unattended.md to ../guidelines.md,
matching the relative path from skills/ to the parent cve-fix/.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- lifecycle_complete: "all required PRs merged and any requested Jira
actions completed" — does not universally require unrequested writes
- README: "may return without creating a new PR" — existing-PR link
in continuation results is valid, only new empty PRs are avoided

Fixed No-Orphaned-References: all four references in cve-fix/skills/unattended.md now use ../guidelines.md and resolve relative to the skill file.
Added regression coverage for cross-branch approval binding, strict completion allowlists, conflict precedence, CSV normalization, and evaluated type annotations.
Validated the documented decision and Jira-request examples; corrected mode-specific Jira authorization and operation/lifecycle wording.
Validation: 673 CVE-script tests pass, including 222 unattended tests. Other repository unit suites, installation, Codex adapter/runtime, structure, version, and Markdown checks also passed. The new head's GitHub Actions checks passed at the latest check; the automated review was still processing the update.

Reject lifecycle completion for backport children that are not merged.
The guard at lines 722-724 accepts a backport child with status: "completed" when lifecycle_complete=True. In the contract, completed means that the backport operation succeeded. It does not mean that the target PR merged. The contract defines lifecycle_complete: true as "all required PRs merged." A caller can therefore receive a lifecycle-complete result for a CVE fix that still has unmerged PRs. The existing test at test_unattended.py:1379-1390 does not cover this case, because it fails on the failed child.
Suggested fix
- # lifecycle_complete: ALL target results must be completed/merged- if operation == "backport" and lifecycle_complete and bp_results:- for i, br in enumerate(bp_results):- if isinstance(br, dict) and br.get("status") not in (- "completed", "merged"- ):+ # lifecycle_complete: ALL target results must be merged+ if operation == "backport" and lifecycle_complete and bp_results:+ for i, br in enumerate(bp_results):+ if isinstance(br, dict) and br.get("status") != "merged":
Add a regression test with only completed children and lifecycle_complete=True. The test should expect ValueError.

Update the backport lifecycle guard using operation, lifecycle_complete, and
bp_results so lifecycle completion is accepted only when every child status is
merged; completed children must not satisfy this condition. Add a regression
test with only completed children and lifecycle_complete=True that expects
ValueError.

Define close_vex application in remediate.
remediate must not write to Jira when it applies an accepted close_vex effect. State that it records the reviewed VEX/artifact outcome only, and require a subsequent explicit jira_action request for ticket closure. The current workflow already restricts /close to jira_action, but the effect’s meaning is otherwise undefined.

Major — lifecycle_complete guard (unattended.py:722-724):
Narrow the backport lifecycle guard to require "merged" children only.
"completed" means the draft PR was created; "merged" means it was
actually merged. lifecycle_complete=True ("all required PRs merged")
must require the latter. Add four regression tests covering:
all-completed+true (rejected), mixed+true (rejected),
all-merged+true (accepted), all-completed+false (still valid).
Minor — close_vex semantics (unattended.md:294):
Clarify that an accepted close_vex effect during remediate records the
reviewed VEX/artifact outcome only and never writes to Jira. Actual
ticket closure requires a subsequent jira_action request with named
tickets, target status, and evidence. Add matching "Effect semantics"
paragraph to the contract.
Advisory — No-Content-Duplication:
- guidelines.md: label the Unattended Mode section as authoritative
policy; skills/unattended.md adds execution detail
- unattended.md Ground Rules: replace duplicated policy statements with
a reference paragraph naming all 12 policy items; keep only execution-
specific additions (time budget, live dedup, artifact path, etc.)
- unattended.md enforcement: replace duplicated field-level validation
list with reference to contract; keep CLI action_authorized gate

Backport lifecycle completion:lifecycle_complete: true now requires every backport child to be merged. Ordinary operation completion with completed children and lifecycle_complete: false remains valid. Added four regression cases covering all-completed, mixed, all-merged, and operation-only completion, and verified the actual make-result CLI rejects the false completion claim.
VEX effect boundary: accepted close_vex during remediate only records the reviewed finding/artifacts. It does not write Jira; ticket closure still requires a subsequent explicitly authorized jira_action with the required ticket, status, and evidence context.
Also consolidated the duplicated policy/checklist prose: guidelines hold the authoritative policies, the contract holds decision requirements, and the execution skill references those while retaining its mandatory reads and action_authorized: true gate. No safety requirements were removed.
Local validation passed: 677 CVE tests, installation, structure/version, Markdown, CI-pinned Skillsaw, and configured offline link checks. The original 16 resolved threads were not reposted. Ai-Attribution remains unchanged.
Assert that repo_path validation returns no errors.
The current substring assertion still passes when validate_request(req) returns an unrelated error. This fixture should validate successfully, so assert the complete result.

2592-2626: Functional Correctness
The comment assumes that check_scope_conflict may visit artifact directories in filesystem order. The implementation sorts them with sorted(artifact_path.iterdir()), so the AAA-100 directory is always processed before BBB-200. The test therefore exercises the early-warning, later-exact path on every filesystem. No change to the implementation or the test is needed.

make_result now requires target_branches when lifecycle_complete=True
for backport operations. Validates: nonempty unique branch list, exactly
one child per requested branch (no missing/extra/duplicate), and all
children merged. target_branches is carried through to the serialized
result for downstream consumers.
Fix backport skill to emit `merged` (not `completed`) for
already-verified-merged coverage, aligning with the lifecycle gate.
Update contract and skill docs to document when target_branches is
required and how it binds to make-result --data.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Non-dict children in backport_results are now rejected with ValueError
instead of silently filtered. Child status is type-checked as string
before frozenset membership (prevents TypeError on list/bool values).
Child target_branch is validated as nonempty string before sort
(prevents TypeError on None/list/bool values).
Align make_result docstring: "all required PRs merged and any requested
Jira actions completed" (not universal Jira write).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Contract: requested_effect example now describes record-only VEX finding
instead of implying Jira closure. Explicitly separates any subsequent
jira_action request.
Skill: qualify CVE-absent handoff — needs_human_review only when no
matching accepted close_vex decision exists or authorization fails.
Eligible accepted decisions with action_authorized:true produce valid
completed no-code result (no PR, no Jira write). Updated both the
after-scan consumer path and the end-summary to prevent accepted
callbacks from looping back to review.
Test: repo_path fixture now asserts validate_request(req)==[] with
explanation that filesystem path is not canonical repo identity.
Added close_vex consumer roundtrip tests (accepted -> completed no-code,
absent -> needs_human_review, stale scan rejected, unauthorized reviewer
rejected, CLI validate-decision roundtrip).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A well-formed rejected decision also exits 0 with action_authorized=false.
The CLI acceptance test now captures stdout and verifies action_authorized=true,
valid=true, and selected_effect="close_vex".
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Pushed a4d4ed0 and replied on the four new inline threads from this review.
For the outside-diff test note, test_repo_path_not_used_for_scope now checks the complete validate_request(req) == [] result instead of only excluding one error substring. The valid fixture is therefore required to have no unrelated validation errors, while filesystem repo_path remains distinct from canonical repository identity. No production validation was relaxed.
The accepted-decision CLI test also checks the returned valid, action_authorized, and selected_effect fields, rather than relying on exit status alone.
Local validation passed for the full CVE suite and other repository unit suites, Markdown, CI-pinned Skillsaw, configured offline links, structure/version checks, and installation. GitHub Actions checks are green on the new head; CodeRabbit is still processing the update at the latest check.

Use addCleanup for the delete=False temp files.
The second NamedTemporaryFile call, json.dump, or flush can raise before the try block starts. The first file then stays on disk, because os.unlink runs only inside finally. Register each unlink with self.addCleanup(os.unlink, path) right after you create the file. You can then remove the try/finally.
Also create the files in a tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() and write them with Path.write_text. This removes the manual cleanup.

Make test_malformed_target_branches_rejected check the reason for the failure.
The test passes for the wrong reason. backport_results has only rel-1, and target_branches is ["rel-1", ""]. The coverage check already raises ValueError here because the blank branch has no matching child. The test still passes if make_result stops validating blank target_branches entries.
Assert the validation message, as the neighbouring tests do. Add a second case with a non-string entry, such as None. Cover both with children that match the requested branches.
Proposed fix
def test_malformed_target_branches_rejected(self) -> None:
"""Non-string or blank entries in target_branches are rejected."""
- with self.assertRaises(ValueError):- unattended.make_result(- status="completed",- operation="backport",- scope={"cve_ids": ["CVE-2024-1"]},- backport_results=[- {"target_branch": "rel-1", "status": "merged"},- ],- lifecycle_complete=True,- target_branches=["rel-1", ""],- )+ for bad in ("", " ", None):+ with self.subTest(bad=bad):+ with self.assertRaises(ValueError) as ctx:+ unattended.make_result(+ status="completed",+ operation="backport",+ scope={"cve_ids": ["CVE-2024-1"]},+ backport_results=[+ {"target_branch": "rel-1", "status": "merged"},+ ],+ lifecycle_complete=True,+ target_branches=["rel-1", bad],+ )+ self.assertIn("nonempty string", str(ctx.exception))
Confirm that the message text matches what make_result raises for malformed target_branches entries. The sibling tests at Lines 2678, 2692 and 2706 use "nonempty string" for child entries.

Update test_malformed_target_branches_rejected to assert the malformed-entry
validation message from make_result, not merely ValueError. Add separate blank
and non-string target_branches cases, arranging backport_results so coverage
cannot cause the failure; verify the message identifies the required nonempty
string. Preserve the existing test scope.

Write vs. or versus.
The phrase code vs infrastructure classification uses vs without a period. Write code versus infrastructure classification for clear American-English punctuation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

746-751: Backport completed still passes without target-branch coverage.
The contract at unattended-contract.md Lines 296-301 says a completed backport needs every target branch to report completed or merged. The coverage guard runs only when lifecycle_complete=True. A call with status="completed", operation="backport", lifecycle_complete=False, and empty or partial backport_results still passes. The caller then reads completed as "every branch has a PR" when it is not. Gate the coverage check on status == "completed" or lifecycle_complete. Keep the all-merged check for lifecycle_complete only.

The concern is a trust-boundary question for the external caller, not a defect in the reviewed change. The contract explicitly makes the current jira_action request the write authorization. It also explicitly assigns caller identity verification to the caller, as shown for reviewer eligibility. The repository defines no /unattended network entry point to which the proposed authorization check would attach. The diff does not add a missing check that the documented contract requires. A requested authentication gate would be a deployment requirement, not a violation demonstrated by this repository's code or documents.
The contract says status=completed for a backport means all target
branches have completed or merged children. Previously, target coverage
(nonempty target_branches, one child per branch, no missing/extra/
duplicate) was enforced only when lifecycle_complete=True. Now the
coverage guard fires whenever status=completed OR lifecycle_complete=
true. lifecycle_complete=True additionally requires every child to be
merged.
Updated three prior fixtures that relied on the gap (completed backport
without target_branches). Added 19 regression tests covering:
- lifecycle_false: empty/missing/subset/extra/duplicate targets rejected
- lifecycle_false: malformed children and blank target labels rejected
- lifecycle_false: exact completed/merged/reordered/mixed success
- lifecycle_false vs lifecycle_true: operation vs lifecycle completion
- non-completed status exemption (partial/blocked)
- CLI coverage tests for lifecycle_false acceptance and rejection
729 CVE tests pass (was 710).

Fix accepted-decision temp file setup: replace two sequential
NamedTemporaryFile(delete=False) calls (leak risk if second creation
fails) with a single TemporaryDirectory context that auto-cleans.
Strengthen all CLI make-result rejection tests to capture stderr and
assert the expected validation reason, and verify no result artifact
is written. Covers: missing target_branches, subset coverage,
non-dict child, list-status child, None target_branch child, and
duplicate children. Also adds target_branches to the list-status
child test so it tests the intended error path (child type validation)
rather than the new coverage gate.
729 CVE tests pass.

389-393: Functional Correctness
No actionable handoff failure is established.
An explicit base_branch must match the snapshot, while an omitted request branch does not require a snapshot branch. The contract's scope examples include base_branch, and no producer or contract rule establishes that reordered cve_ids or packages must be treated as equivalent.
Add expected_jira_action projection (action + target_status when
transition) as required result metadata for completed jira_action
results. Copied from the current validated request's jira_action,
this prevents a completed result from silently accepting child
metadata that contradicts the requested action (e.g. reporting
success for a comment when a transition was requested, or claiming
a different transition target).
Child action/target_status metadata remains optional — absent or
null values are accepted. Present non-null values must match the
expected context; malformed values raise clean ValueError.
Wire through make_result signature, _cmd_make_result CLI, contract
schema, skill instructions, and 28 new tests (API + CLI).

For No-Orphaned-References, a110f42 adds an explicit relative Markdown reference to commands/unattended.md in cve-fix/SKILL.md. The existing direct unattended-skill dispatch is preserved; the link does not introduce a command/SKILL execution cycle. The custom pre-merge check's reevaluation is still pending.
The additional tests cover target mismatch without child action metadata, malformed expected context, and an actual CLI round-trip from a temporary working directory. The freshly captured full CVE suite ran 845 tests successfully. CI-pinned Skillsaw, Markdown, configured offline links, structure and version checks passed locally. All ten GitHub Actions checks pass on the new head; CodeRabbit is still processing.

## Package Versioning
When modifying a committed workflow or simple skill, update the version in that
package's `SKILL.md` frontmatter following semver. A new, uncommitted package may
remain at its initial `0.1.0` while it is being developed:
- **PATCH** (0.1.0 → 0.1.1): Typo fixes, wording clarification
without behavioral change, formatting
- **MINOR** (0.1.0 → 0.2.0): Adding/changing/reordering behavior,
modifying rules, changing templates, or adding workflow phases
- **MAJOR** (0.1.0 → 1.0.0): Removing or renaming public phases,
commands, configuration keys, or other package interfaces; incompatible restructuring

### Which files require a version bump
Behavioral files (the AI reads and executes these):
`SKILL.md` body, `guidelines.md`, `skills/*.md`, `commands/*.md`,
`templates/*`, `prompts/*`, `scripts/*`, `_shared/**/*.md`, and
root-level `.md` files in workflow directories that are read during
execution (e.g., `design/decomposition-review.md`). For simple skills, this
includes `skills/{skill-name}/SKILL.md`, `references/*`, `templates/*`,
`prompts/*`, `scripts/*`, and other files read or executed by the skill.

389-393: Data Integrity & Integration
The workflow requires the live base-branch comparison before it applies the approval. The claimed stale-approval path does not follow from request validation alone.
1747-1749: Data Integrity & Integration
The inspected workflow supplies explicit instructions for copying the current request. The evidence does not establish that the agent passes different values or that the helper promises independent request binding.
cve-fix/guidelines.md: 1
128-128: Maintainability & Code Quality
The unattended workflow permits /close for an explicitly authorized jira_action. The two guidelines describe that same restriction; they do not state that /close is never used unattended.

201-207: Data Integrity & Integration
Align the absent-CVE contract outcome.
unattended-contract.md says an absent CVE returns needs_human_review, but its completion section also says CVE-absent, no-code outcomes are valid completions. This flow returns completed after a matching, authorized close_vex decision. Please verify that the contract and its consumers define this exception. Otherwise, callers can receive conflicting outcomes for the same run. (github.com)
For comment actions, the expected_jira_action projection now includes
the exact requested comment text from request.jira_action.comment.
The make_result guard enforces:
- expected_jira_action.comment required and nonblank for comment action
- expected_jira_action.comment absent/None for transition action
- Child jira_results[i].comment non-null must be nonempty string
matching expected; absent/null accepted (child metadata optional)
- Child comment on transition action rejected
- Error messages do not dump full comment text
Comment field is the exact input payload, not provider-rendered body.
Existing live-dedup reads, write confirmation, and idempotency gates
remain unchanged.
Updated: helper docstring, contract schema/examples, skill projection
instructions, and comprehensive tests (API + CLI + subprocess).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The remediate operation summary (L86-87) previously read as if
CVE-absent always returns needs_human_review. The flow (L200-207)
and completion section (L297) already define the close_vex exception:
a matching accepted authorized close_vex decision returns completed
with recorded VEX rationale (record-only — no PR, no Jira write).
This is a doc-only clarification of existing behavior. No runtime
change, no new lifecycle permission, no Jira write authorization.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The prior commit made child jira_results[i].comment optional
(if child_comment is not None) for comment actions, which allowed
completed results without verified comment metadata.
For completed/lifecycle_complete jira_action with action='comment':
every success or already_in_status child MUST now carry a nonempty
string comment exactly matching expected_jira_action.comment.
Missing, null, non-string, empty, whitespace-only, or different
child comment raises ValueError. The child must report the actual
submitted/verified payload, never a copy of the expected text.
Transitions acquire no comment requirement; partial and other
operation semantics unchanged. Error messages do not dump comment
contents.
Updated: helper docstring, contract schema, skill flow instructions,
and tests (replaced bypass-acceptance tests with negative tests,
strengthened subprocess roundtrip to derive projection from validated
request, added CRLF derive-context coverage).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The jira_action flow step 6 now explicitly scopes the child comment
requirement to comment actions and clarifies that transition actions
must not carry a comment field, matching the helper's existing guard.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Published the five focused commits through 4f5d38b and replied with fixing commits on both new inline findings from this review.
For the additional Align the absent-CVE contract outcome note, ffd0b1c clarifies the existing exception: a current, matching, eligible and authorized accepted close_vex decision can complete the record-only no-code outcome. Without that decision, the workflow returns needs_human_review. This does not create an empty PR, perform a Jira write or imply lifecycle completion; a Jira disposition still needs a separate explicitly authorized jira_action.
Validation passed locally: all 885 CVE tests, the other repository unit suites, CI-pinned Skillsaw, Markdown, configured offline links, structure/version checks, installation/update tests, adapters and the actual pinned Codex runtime smoke test. The published head is available for CI and reevaluation.

Use a stable, collision-resistant context for unattended artifacts.
derive_context does not read jira_action.tickets, so the documented jira_action request falls through to a timestamp-based context. A later invocation can therefore use a different artifact directory and fail to find the earlier unattended-result.json.
The reference fallback also uses only the final path component. Reference-only requests such as PR 42, branches a/foo and b/foo, or different operation scopes can map to the same directory and overwrite its result. Requests with valid top-level cve_ids or jira_tickets avoid this specific fallback because those fields take precedence.
Derive the context from a stable, complete operation scope. Include the nested Jira tickets and enough operation, repository/reference, and target information to keep distinct requests separate while mapping reruns of the same request to the same artifact directory.

221-221: Functional Correctness
The result contract covers merged branches.
The no-op instruction does not exempt merged branches from the per-branch result and evidence requirements. The contract specifies both pr.url and evidence for those results.
cve-fix/scripts/unattended.py: 1
1475-1476: Functional Correctness
The local self-match is supported, but the instructions do not treat it as an authoritative blocker. The proposed directory exclusion alone would not establish that the result belongs to the same target.
Add validate_branch_name() implementing git-check-ref-format rules in
pure Python, applied to base_branch, branch, and target_branches in
validate_request. Valid shell-metacharacter names (release;id, $(...))
are preserved; option-like (-x), pseudo-ref (@{-1}), double-dot,
control characters, and other malformed refs are rejected with
reason-specific errors.
Update backport instructions to show argv-style execution
(shell=False) for all git commands containing caller-supplied branch
values, preventing shell interpretation of metacharacters.
Tests include Git parity verification, API + CLI coverage, and a
literal-argv proof demonstrating correct argument list construction.

When make_result receives status=completed, operation=remediate, and
stages_completed includes "validate", evidence.validation_verdict must
be present and contain a normalized PASS value. Previously, a None or
missing validation_verdict silently bypassed the allowlist guard.
Genuine no-code completions (close_vex, merged existing PR) are
preserved — they do not list "validate" in stages_completed. Other
operations (backport, jira_action) and non-completed statuses are
unaffected.
Tests cover missing/null/blank/bad-type/FAIL/UNKNOWN/PENDING/scan-only
rejection, valid PASS acceptance, preserved close_vex and merged-PR
paths, preserved other operations, and CLI integration.

Replace the last-component extraction and timestamp fallback in
derive_context with a deterministic SHA-256 hash over canonical
declared operation scope. The hash includes operation, repo_path,
base_branch, pr_url, work_ref (scalars); cve_ids, jira_tickets,
packages, target_branches (sorted lists); and nested jira_action
fields (action, tickets, target_status, comment). Runtime state
(stages, retry budgets, prior_result, human_decisions, timestamps)
is excluded so reruns with the same scope produce the same context.
Primary contexts (first valid Jira ticket, first valid CVE ID) are
preserved unchanged. The fallback produces unattended-{hex32} (128
bits), which is collision-resistant, deterministic, and contains no
plaintext payloads.
Update the skill to consume the returned context from the validate
CLI output rather than manually extracting it.
Tests verify determinism across reruns/reordered keys, collision
resistance for different repos/work_refs with same last component,
nested jira_action inclusion, no plaintext leak, preserved primary
contexts, and CLI round-trip consumption.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Replace string-joining serialization in derive_context with typed
canonical JSON (json.dumps sort_keys=True, compact separators).
Fixes collisions: packages=['a,b'] vs ['a','b'] and newline-in-scalar
field boundary ambiguity. Add branch to fallback identity fields.
- Reject HEAD in validate_branch_name (proven mismatch: git
check-ref-format --branch rejects HEAD). Add git parity tests for
HEAD and @ with specific causes and subprocess counterexamples.
- Replace in-process test_cli_make_result_uses_context_dir with
actual subprocess isolation: fresh validate→make-result→read-back
proving context-derived dirs retain results across invocations.
Add separate-scope dir test and CLI negative/positive evidence tests.
- Add contract section documenting validate CLI context/fallback shape,
declared identity, primary precedence, and completed-remediate
validation_verdict PASS requirement.
- Add concrete subprocess.run literal-argv example in skill doc.

Deterministic fixture with distinct commits on main (A) and literal
refs/heads/@ (B), created via update-ref + full refspec push, proves
the documented backport consumer argv works: clone establishes
origin/@ tracking ref, and checkout -b ... origin/@ resolves to
SHA_B correctly. The fixture uses --initial-branch=main and
GIT_CONFIG_COUNT env for identity (no global config writes), and
passes with non-main init.defaultBranch.
Note: 'git fetch origin @' fetches HEAD (not @), but this is
irrelevant because clone already creates the tracking ref.
Removes the bare '@' rejection from validate_branch_name.
Keeps HEAD, -x, @{...}, and invalid-syntax rejections.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A bare 'git fetch origin @' fetches HEAD, not the branch named '@',
and does not refresh the tracking ref after a remote advance. Change
the documented backport consumer argv to use a qualified refspec:
refs/heads/{target}:refs/remotes/origin/{target}
This fetches the literal branch and updates the tracking ref. The
checkout start-point uses refs/remotes/origin/{target} to match.
Test fixture proves the fix with three distinct commits (A=main,
B=initial @, C=advanced @ after clone): bare fetch leaves origin/@
stale at B, qualified fetch refreshes to C, checkout resolves to C.
Fixture uses --initial-branch=main, GIT_CONFIG_COUNT env identity,
update-ref + full refspec push; passes with non-main default.

### Version bump baseline
Rules:
2. If you already bumped a package's version for this PR, do **not** bump it
again for additional changes at the same semver level.
3. The only reason to re-bump within a PR is when the **class** of change
escalates (PATCH → MINOR or MINOR → MAJOR). In that case, set the version
to what the higher level requires relative to the merge base — do not stack
increments.

The six-commit batch is published through a603fa1, and both inline findings have commit-linked replies.
For the outside-diff stable artifact context note in this review, 23b99a0 and 984b13a replace only the reference/timestamp fallback with a deterministic scoped hash. Existing primary Jira/CVE context precedence is preserved.
The fallback uses typed canonical JSON, including nested Jira action scope, complete references and declared repository/branch/target/package inputs. Array elements and field boundaries remain distinct; runtime stages, retries, decisions and timestamps do not change the namespace. The skill consumes the validation command's returned context. Isolated CLI regressions verify stable reuse and separate directories for distinct fallback scopes. This namespace is not approval or write authority, and does not replace the portable prior-result handoff.
All 986 CVE tests pass at the final commit, affected lint checks pass, and the broader repository checks were validated during the batch. All GitHub check runs currently pass on the published head. The three separate findings in the later review 5805977092 are being assessed separately; they are not claimed resolved here.
Earlier review replies were not repeated. Version 0.7.0, ready-for-review state and attribution handling remain unchanged.
Add jira_action.vex_justification as an optional field that declares
VEX field write intent for transition actions. The field accepts exactly
one of the five canonical codes (matching close.py's mapping). When
present, make_result validates that each completed child carries a
matching vex_justification and vex_field_verified=True; unrequested
VEX receipts are rejected. The skill flow writes the dedicated Jira
field and verifies success before proceeding with the transition.

Add optional prior_operations list to results that preserves full
snapshots of prior results when multiple make-result calls target the
same artifact directory. The CLI reads the existing result, strips
prior_operations from the snapshot to prevent recursive nesting, carries
forward existing history entries, and atomically writes via temp+rename.
Malformed existing JSON produces a controlled error without data loss.
load_state exposes prior_operations count without using historical
approval/status as current authorization.

Replace shell-interpolated JSON strings in module header, skill Quick
Start, and contract validate-decision examples with subprocess argument
lists using shell=False and json.dumps() as a single --data/--scope
argument. This prevents metacharacter injection and preserves exact
payloads including apostrophes, newlines, and special characters. Add
CLI roundtrip tests with nine adversarial payloads and a script path
containing spaces.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Reject explicit null vex_justification in request validation and
expected_jira_action (contract says "Null...rejected"); absent key
remains accepted. Update false-positive acceptance test.
- Add shared validate_flat_history() that rejects non-dict entries and
nested prior_operations. Use in both make_result constructor and CLI.
- CLI make-result: error on malformed old history (non-list, non-dict
entries, recursive nesting) instead of silently filtering. Accept and
validate incoming data.prior_operations for portable handoff.
- determine_resume_stage blocks with needs_input when result_malformed,
preventing mutating-stage suggestions on corrupt state files.
- Atomic write uses unique owned temp file (mkstemp) instead of
constant .tmp name; guard mkdir and write errors.
- 14 new tests covering all changes.

All dynamic helper calls in unattended.md (check-scope, load-state,
validate-decision, make-result) now use Python subprocess argv lists
with json.dumps for JSON-valued flags and raw strings for scalars.
Replaces shell-interpolated text templates that would teach unsafe
patterns to the executing agent. Fixes [...] Ellipsis literal in
make-result example (not JSON-serializable) with actual variable
references.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Test payloads containing shell metacharacters now use benign marker
strings (MARKER_D through MARKER_I) instead of destructive commands
like 'rm -rf' or sensitive paths like '/etc/passwd'. Assertions
verify markers are absent from stderr, proving no shell evaluation
occurred. The payloads remain valid shell-metacharacter test data
for JSON round-trip verification.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- load_state: validate prior_operations with shared strict validator
when key present; bad container/entry/nesting sets result_malformed
and reaches determine_resume_stage guard before mutations. Catch
UnicodeError as controlled error (both loader and writer).
- validate_prior_result: type-check result.prior_operations when key
present (null/non-list/nested entries rejected).
- _cmd_make_result: reject explicit null data.prior_operations (omit
key when absent); add UnicodeError catch on old file read.
- Atomic write: write-all loop with memoryview over remaining bytes;
os.write returning <=0 raises OSError (controlled, not infinite
loop). Old file preserved on zero-progress/write/close/replace
failure.
- VEX field flow: live-read first, already-correct read IS
verification (skip edit only); otherwise write then live-verify.
EJA projection includes vex_justification when present.
- Contract: remove misleading vex_justification:null from Jira
Action Object example (explicit null is rejected).
- Tests: load_state history validation (8), prior_result.result
history (5), null incoming rejection (1), atomic write short-write
and zero-progress (3), comment-metadata CLI roundtrip with special
chars and marker-file injection guard (1).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Replace TestAtomicWriteShortWrite.test_full_json_written_under_mocked_short_writes
subprocess call with in-process os.write mock that writes only 7-byte chunks,
exercising the write-all loop and asserting multiple write calls, full JSON on
disk matching stdout, and expected large_field payload.
Add basis classification heading to /close doc: fix-based closures follow
ordinary transitions; VEX-based closures require dedicated vex_justification
field with current typed opt-in; unknown basis blocks with needs_input.

Handle unreadable text in sibling result files.
If a sibling result cannot be decoded, check-scope exits with an uncaught exception. The skill's check=True call can stop the workflow before the required live PR check. Catch UnicodeError and add a regression test for invalid bytes.

### Which files require a version bump
Behavioral files (the AI reads and executes these):
`SKILL.md` body, `guidelines.md`, `skills/*.md`, `commands/*.md`,
`templates/*`, `prompts/*`, `scripts/*`, `_shared/**/*.md`, and
root-level `.md` files in workflow directories that are read during
execution (e.g., `design/decomposition-review.md`). For simple skills, this
includes `skills/{skill-name}/SKILL.md`, `references/*`, `templates/*`,
`prompts/*`, `scripts/*`, and other files read or executed by the skill.

decision requires human review, including the need for reviewer_policy and
reviewed human_decisions, and the use of prior_result when handing off to a
fresh workspace. Link this guidance to the unattended contract.

Isolate artifacts for different scopes.
Requests for the same CVE on different base branches receive the same context. Both can proceed as distinct work, but write to the same artifact directory. A later run can overwrite phase artifacts and mix unrelated results in the same history.
Separate artifact storage by scope while preserving reruns and intentional cross-operation handoffs.

Separate artifact storage by work scope so requests for the same CVE on
different base branches cannot overwrite or mix artifacts. Update the artifact
path and lookup logic in the unattended contract to distinguish scopes, while
keeping reruns for the same scope stable and preserving intentional

Handle local discovery results before stopping.check-scope returns exit code 1 for both CVE overlaps and package-only warnings. With check=True, either result can stop the workflow before the required live PR check. Inspect the JSON result and verify live PR state before deciding whether to stop. Handle other command failures separately.

If an agent uses this dictionary as written, make-result rejects completed backport and Jira results. A needs_human_review result also omits the decision request.
Update the example to include the required child results and request metadata. Include the decision request in human_decisions for human-review outcomes.

Summary
The
cve-fixpackage adds an unattended entry point for remediation, backports, and explicitly authorized Jira actions. The package now includes an/unattendedcommand, a workflow skill, and a request/result contract.
The root
AGENTS.mdworkflow listing also adds the new mode. CI now discovers tests incve-fix/scripts.Scope
No
_shared/files changed. The rootAGENTS.mdworkflow listing changed, but the diff does not establish a broader change to cross-package conventions.
