Fixes #9120

Purpose

Timers and cron triggers only ran against the default tenant when tenants have their own databases. Quartz resolved job constructor dependencies before any tenant was pushed, so stores and DbContexts bound to the default tenant.

Scope

  • Bug fix (behavior change)

Description

Problem

RunWorkflowJob, ResumeWorkflowJob and ExecuteBackgroundActivityJob used to push the tenant at the start of Execute. That is too late: IWorkflowStarter, stores and the DbContexts behind them are resolved by the job factory first. An Execute-time lookup (the previous fallback) is the same too-late push and silently reintroduces #9120.

Solution

TenantAwareJobFactory derives from Quartz 3.15.1's MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory and is registered once per container by JobFactoryRegistration.TryUseTenantAwareJobFactory:

  • Called from QuartzFeature, QuartzSchedulerFeature (UseQuartzScheduler()), and QuartzBackgroundActivitySchedulerFeature (same module path), plus the matching shell features.
  • Registers only when no host IJobFactory is present.
  • Quartz 3.15.1's AddQuartz default is TryAddSingleton(typeof(IJobFactory), typeof(MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory)). That default is treated as replaceable and does not count as "another factory".
  • A host IJobFactory (typed, instance, or factory delegate) is kept. Detection works whether features run before or after AddQuartz.

The factory:

  1. Reads TenantId from the trigger JobDataMap, falling back to the job JobDataMap.
  2. Finds the tenant.
    • Lookup succeeded and returned null: log that the job's triggers are now in ERROR and throw from NewJob.
    • Lookup threw (DB/transient): do not throw from NewJob. Return a job that defers the failure into Execute. Workflow jobs use IQuartzJobRetryScheduler; durable ExecuteBackgroundActivityJob deletes itself and rethrows via ExceptionDispatchInfo.
  3. Push that tenant, resolve the job from the base factory, and return a thin IJob wrapper that pushes the tenant again around Execute.
  4. A job with no TenantId keeps today's default-tenant behaviour.

Jobs no longer look up or push a tenant. If trigger/job data has a TenantId but the tenant in context during Execute is null or different, they log the TenantId and job key and throw. They never fall through to default-tenant stores.

Hosts that register their own IJobFactory must resolve jobs inside the trigger's tenant (or use TenantAwareJobFactory). Otherwise the guard fails the job loudly instead of silently using the default tenant. Public constructors are unchanged.

Tests

  • Factory: tenant from trigger, tenant from job, trigger wins over job, missing tenant throws and names ERROR state, lookup exception defers to the retry scheduler, background-activity lookup failure deletes the durable job and does not retry, no TenantId uses default-tenant services.
  • Real in-memory scheduler: a job for tenant-b sees that tenant at construction and inside Execute.
  • Module path: UseQuartzScheduler() without UseQuartz(), real in-memory scheduler, tenant-a and tenant-b each see their own tenant at construction and in Execute.
  • Guard: jobs throw when the trigger tenant is missing from context or differs; they do not start work.
  • Host custom IJobFactory is kept (not overridden); the guard then fires loudly.
  • Registration: Quartz default factory is replaced; host typed/delegate factories are kept; features register the factory once.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Scheduled jobs with tenant information now run in the matching tenant context, using the trigger’s tenant first and the job’s tenant when the trigger has none.
    • Jobs without tenant information retain the default tenant behavior. Host-provided job factories remain in use.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Jobs fail with an error when the scheduled tenant is missing or does not match the current context.
    • Tenant lookup failures can defer execution for a retry when retry scheduling is available. Background activity jobs are removed when tenant lookup fails.
    • Jobs referencing a tenant that cannot be found report an error.

Quartz constructed jobs before any tenant was pushed, so constructor
dependencies bound to the default tenant. A tenant-aware job factory now
reads TenantId from the trigger (or job) data, pushes that tenant into a
DI scope, and only then resolves the job.

Walkthrough

Quartz now creates tenant-scoped jobs through a tenant-aware job factory registered by Quartz feature paths when no host factory is present. Scheduled jobs check that the scheduled tenant matches the current tenant context before proceeding.

Changes: Quartz tenant context

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tenant-aware job creation and execution
extensions/src/scheduling/Elsa.Scheduling.Quartz/Services/TenantAwareJobFactory.cs, extensions/test/modules/scheduling/Elsa.Scheduling.Quartz.UnitTests/Services/TenantAwareJobFactoryTests.cs, extensions/src/scheduling/Elsa.Scheduling.Quartz/Elsa.Scheduling.Quartz.csproj
The factory reads tenant IDs from trigger data before job-detail data. When a tenant is found, it creates and executes jobs within that tenant context. Lookup failures use a failure-job wrapper. Tests cover tenant selection, scoped services, lookup failures, and scheduler execution.
Factory registration across Quartz features

Quartz feature paths register the tenant-aware factory when no host-provided factory exists. Registration keeps host factories and avoids duplicate tenant-aware registrations. Tests check these registration cases.
Scheduled-job tenant verification

Scheduled jobs check that the current tenant matches the scheduled tenant before proceeding. The check reads tenant IDs from trigger, job-detail, then merged job data. Tests cover missing and mismatched context tenants, matching tenants, and activity-job deletion.

The description is complete and aligned with the template. It states the purpose, bug, solution, verification steps, expected behavior, test results, scope, and checklist status. Screenshots are not required because this is not a UI change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#9120] Requires timers and cron triggers to run for tenants that have their own databases. At head, TenantAwareJobFactory.InstantiateJob reads TenantId from the trigger JobDataMap, then the job JobDataMap. It finds the tenant and pushes it before calling base.InstantiateJob, so constructor dependencies bind to that tenant. TenantJob pushes the same tenant again around Execute. JobFactoryRegistration.TryUseTenantAwareJobFactory is called from QuartzFeature, QuartzSchedulerFeature, QuartzBackgroundActivitySchedulerFeature, and the matching shell features, so the default configuration uses the factory. Lookup exceptions no longer fall back to the default tenant. Workflow jobs defer the failure to IQuartzJobRetryScheduler. ExecuteBackgroundActivityJob deletes itself and rethrows. Jobs with no TenantId keep default-tenant behavior. The reported tests cover tenant selection, precedence, missing tenant, lookup failure, and a real in-memory scheduler with two tenants. The previous assessment cited an Execute-time fallback. That fallback is removed at head, so the earlier conclusion was re-checked against the current code. Consequence: a host that keeps its own IJobFactory, as in the issue workaround, now fails jobs at Execute unless the host also resolves jobs inside the trigger tenant. The EnsureScheduledTenant guard in JobExecutionExtensions enforces this. This follows the documented design. It does not change the default-configuration result for #9120.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All reviewed changes connect to [#9120]. TenantAwareJobFactory and JobFactoryRegistration add the tenant-aware factory and the host-factory detection. The Quartz feature and shell feature edits register the factory. RunWorkflowJob, ResumeWorkflowJob, and ExecuteBackgroundActivityJob drop the Execute-time lookup and call EnsureScheduledTenant. The removed GetTenantAsync belongs to JobExecutionExtensions, which is an internal static class, so no public API is removed. The InternalsVisibleTo entry, the test helper changes, and the new tests support verification of the fix. The ModuleExtensions documentation describes the new registration behavior. ResumeWorkflowJob keeps the tenantFinder constructor parameter for binary compatibility, as stated in its summary. No unrelated change is demonstrated. Limits: I read TenantAwareJobFactory.cs and JobExecutionExtensions.cs at head. The JobFactoryRegistration logic and the test files were assessed from the change summary only.

[High impact] No blocking findings remain. The reviewed changes are suitable to merge, with the acknowledged host-job TenantId key-collision risk.

Summary

Quartz now resolves scheduled jobs inside their tenant before building their dependencies.

  • Quartz jobs now resolve and run inside their scheduled tenant.

Acknowledged risk: elsa-workflows-review-bot[bot] accepted the narrow host-job TenantId collision risk and explicitly agreed to leave the thread resolved because Elsa's own scheduler paths already enable multitenancy. greptile-apps[bot] also acknowledged that narrower concern as non-blocking: ordinary jobs without TenantId do not gain a tenant-service dependency, but a host-defined job using that key is treated as tenant-aware.

Elsa 3 Code Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + HIGH @ f1d3536

Code Review, Round 1/6

The diagnosis in #9120 is right, and resolving the job inside the tenant is the right fix. But as written, the tenant is gone by the time the job runs. Removing the per-job PushContext blocks turns that into a regression for setups that work today. There are two blockers, then my take on the three deviations.

Blocker 1: no tenant context during Execute

TenantAwareJobFactory.cs:35 pushes the tenant inside NewJob, and ScopedJob.Execute (:98) runs the inner job with no tenant. In Quartz 3.15.1, NewJob is called from the async JobRunShell.Initialize on the scheduler loop. DefaultTenantAccessor stores the tenant in an AsyncLocal, and that write is reverted when Initialize returns. Execute then runs through ThreadPool.RunInThread on a context that never had the tenant. So constructor dependencies get tenant B, but ITenantAccessor.Tenant is null inside Execute.

Everything that reads the tenant at execution time now sees the default tenant. That includes TenantAwareDbContextFactory.SetTenantId and the ElsaDbContextBase constructor (EF stores create a context per operation), Store.cs:194, the tenant headers in BackgroundWorkflowDispatcher, and the MassTransit tenant middleware. The three jobs used to push the tenant at the start of Execute. With those blocks removed, a shared-database multi-tenant setup that works today would run a tenant's timer under the default tenant's filter. RunWorkflowJob can then hit WorkflowGraphNotFoundException, and UnscheduleAfterWorkflowGraphNotFoundAsync removes that tenant's schedule.

The new tests don't catch this because they call NewJob synchronously from the test method. The AsyncLocal is still set in the caller, and nothing goes through a scheduler.

Repro: a real in-memory scheduler using the PR's factory. The tenant is tenant-b at construction and null in Execute. Locally, the 165 existing tests pass and this test fails on the Execute assertion:

Test
public sealed class Probe
{
    public string? AtConstruction;
    public string? AtExecute;
    public readonly TaskCompletionSource Done = new(TaskCreationOptions.RunContinuationsAsynchronously);
}

public sealed class ProbeJob : IJob
{
    private readonly ITenantAccessor _accessor;
    private readonly Probe _probe;

    public ProbeJob(ITenantAccessor accessor, Probe probe)
    {
        _accessor = accessor;
        _probe = probe;
        probe.AtConstruction = accessor.Tenant?.Id;
    }

    public Task Execute(IJobExecutionContext context)
    {
        _probe.AtExecute = _accessor.Tenant?.Id;
        _probe.Done.TrySetResult();
        return Task.CompletedTask;
    }
}

[Fact]
public async Task RealScheduler_TenantVisibleDuringExecute()
{
    var probe = new Probe();
    var services = new ServiceCollection();
    services.AddSingleton<ILoggerFactory>(NullLoggerFactory.Instance);
    services.AddSingleton(typeof(ILogger<>), typeof(NullLogger<>));
    services.AddSingleton<ITenantAccessor, DefaultTenantAccessor>();
    services.AddSingleton<ITenantFinder, Finder>(); // returns new Tenant { Id = id }
    services.AddSingleton(probe);
    services.AddQuartz(q => q.UseJobFactory<TenantAwareJobFactory>());
    await using var sp = services.BuildServiceProvider();
    var scheduler = await sp.GetRequiredService<ISchedulerFactory>().GetScheduler();
    await scheduler.Start();
    var job = JobBuilder.Create<ProbeJob>().WithIdentity("probe").Build();
    var trigger = TriggerBuilder.Create().ForJob(job).UsingJobData("TenantId", "tenant-b").StartNow().Build();
    await scheduler.ScheduleJob(job, trigger);
    await probe.Done.Task.WaitAsync(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(20));
    await scheduler.Shutdown(true);

    Assert.Equal("tenant-b", probe.AtConstruction); // passes
    Assert.Equal("tenant-b", probe.AtExecute);      // fails: null
}

Fix: the factory stays the single owner, but it pushes the tenant twice: around construction, and again around Execute. I checked this locally: holding the resolved Tenant in the wrapper and pushing it in Execute makes the repro pass, and all 166 tests pass. The simplest shape also covers deviation 2:

internal sealed class TenantAwareJobFactory(IServiceProvider serviceProvider, IOptions<QuartzOptions> options, ILogger<TenantAwareJobFactory> logger)
    : MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory(serviceProvider, options)
{
    protected override IJob InstantiateJob(TriggerFiredBundle bundle, IScheduler scheduler)
    {
        var tenantId = ReadTenantId(bundle);
        if (tenantId is null)
            return base.InstantiateJob(bundle, scheduler);

        var tenant = FindTenantOrThrow(bundle, tenantId);
        var accessor = serviceProvider.GetRequiredService<ITenantAccessor>();

        using (accessor.PushContext(tenant))
            return new TenantJob(base.InstantiateJob(bundle, scheduler), accessor, tenant);
    }

    // Not IDisposable on purpose: Quartz unwraps IJobWrapper.Target and async-disposes the base scope.
    private sealed class TenantJob(IJob inner, ITenantAccessor accessor, Tenant tenant) : IJob, IJobWrapper
    {
        public IJob Target => inner;

        public async Task Execute(IJobExecutionContext context)
        {
            using (accessor.PushContext(tenant))
                await inner.Execute(context);
        }
    }
}

I also checked this derived shape locally: the real-scheduler repro passes. The existing factory tests need Mock.Of<IScheduler>(s => s.Context == new SchedulerContext()), because PropertySettingJobFactory.BuildJobDataMap reads scheduler.Context. Please add a real-scheduler test like the one above (construction and Execute) to the suite.

Blocker 2: a transient tenant-lookup failure now parks the job's triggers in ERROR

TenantAwareJobFactory.cs:83-:84 rethrows when ITenantFinder.FindByIdAsync throws. Today that lookup runs inside the try in each job's Execute, so a retryable failure (a tenant-store timeout, say) goes through IQuartzJobRetryScheduler and the trigger keeps firing. Now it escapes NewJob, and Quartz moves every trigger of that job to ERROR, including the future fires of a cron trigger. Recovering the tenant store doesn't bring them back. Someone has to reset or reschedule the triggers by hand.

Only the not found case should stay fatal. Please keep finder exceptions on the retry path, for example by returning a small job from the factory whose Execute hands the exception to IQuartzJobRetryScheduler (IsRetryable / TryScheduleRetryAsync, and otherwise log). The trigger then stays NORMAL and the next fire retries the lookup. Please add a test for this path.

Deviations

  1. Throw instead of unschedule: acceptable for a missing tenant, not for a lookup failure (Blocker 2). Quartz wraps the exception in a SchedulerException and notifies scheduler listeners. QuartzSchedulerThread then calls TriggeredJobComplete(..., SetAllJobTriggersError), so every trigger of that job moves to ERROR and stops firing. With the shared ADO store that applies cluster-wide. There is no misfire loop, no retry storm and no log spam: one error per affected job, then it's parked. For a tenant that really doesn't exist, that's a reasonable fail-loud outcome and never falls back to the default tenant. Please have the error log state that the job's triggers are now in ERROR, so operators know what to reset once the tenant exists.

  2. Implementing IJobFactory directly: the stated reason doesn't hold. The repo pins Quartz 3.15.1 (extensions/src/Directory.Packages.props:231). In that version MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory is public and overrides protected virtual IJob InstantiateJob(TriggerFiredBundle, IScheduler) from PropertySettingJobFactory. The workaround in #9120 uses exactly that override. UseJobFactory replaces the factory for every job in the host's scheduler, not only Elsa's, and the hand-rolled version loses three things:

    • Async scope disposal. The base returns an IAsyncDisposable wrapper and implements IJobWithAsyncReturnFactory. Here, scope.Dispose() is synchronous (:104), and MS DI throws on that path for any scoped service that only implements IAsyncDisposable.
    • The canDispose: !fromContainer guard. :103 disposes a job that was resolved from the container, including a host job registered as a singleton.
    • The activator cache.

    Deriving, as sketched above, keeps all three and makes the class smaller. It's not blocking on its own, but it's the natural way to fix the blocker.

  3. Unit test with a real ServiceProvider instead of per-tenant databases: fine for a patch. But the bug sits at the Quartz execution boundary, which the current tests never cross. One test that fires through a real in-memory scheduler and asserts the tenant at construction and in Execute is enough. A per-tenant-database run isn't required here.

Other checks

  • Scope lifetime: each ScopedJob owns its own scope, so there's no shared state or dictionary to race on. The scope is disposed when NewJob throws after creating it (:41-:45). Fine.
  • Registration: default AddQuartz uses the MS DI factory, and this replaces it. DI-registered jobs still resolve via GetServiceOrCreateInstance. QuartzFeature registers before the host's ConfigureQuartz, so a host factory still wins there. Nit: UseJobFactory is a services.Replace at call time, so the extra registrations in the two QuartzSchedulerFeatures can override a host factory, depending on the order features apply. One registration point per feature set would be simpler.
  • Job data: all scheduling sites (QuartzWorkflowScheduler, QuartzBackgroundActivityScheduler) put TenantId on the trigger data, and QuartzJobRetryScheduler copies the trigger map, so retries keep the tenant. It's a plain string, so it's safe with UseProperties and the JSON serializer in clustered stores.
  • Host jobs: the factory applies to every job in the host's scheduler, so a host job that happens to carry its own TenantId key is now looked up as an Elsa tenant. Elsa's jobs come from QuartzSchedulerFeature, which depends on MultitenancyFeature, so ITenantFinder is there for them. Consider GetService plus a clear log when tenancy isn't registered, or applying the tenant step only to Elsa's job types. Non-blocking.
  • Default tenant: Tenant.DefaultTenantId is "" and AddIfNotEmpty skips it, so default-tenant jobs take the no-TenantId path, as before. Unchanged.
  • Patch safety: removing ITenantAccessor/ITenantFinder from the constructors of the public RunWorkflowJob, ResumeWorkflowJob and ExecuteBackgroundActivityJob is a small binary change for anyone constructing or subclassing them. That's probably acceptable, but worth a line in the release notes for 3.10.1.

The fix needs a [3.10] pick for 3.10.1 once this lands on main.

Address CR R1: derive TenantAwareJobFactory from
MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory, wrap the inner IJob so the
tenant is pushed again in Execute, throw from NewJob only when the
tenant is missing, defer lookup failures to IQuartzJobRetryScheduler,
restore the public job constructors for 3.10.1 binary compatibility,
and register the factory only on the Quartz feature.

Elsa 3 Code Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + HIGH @ 61bde2a

Code Review, Round 2/6

Both Round 1 blockers are fixed. The tenant is now visible in Execute under a real scheduler, and a tenant lookup exception no longer puts triggers in ERROR. One new blocker came in with the cleanup: the job factory is now the only place that sets the tenant, and some supported module setups never install it.

Verified

  • Blocker 1 (fixed). RealScheduler_TenantVisibleDuringConstructionAndExecute passes against an in-memory scheduler, and it asserts tenant-b both at construction and in Execute. TenantJob disposes its push through using, so the tenant is restored even when the job throws.
  • Wrapper safety. Quartz 3.15.1 reads [DisallowConcurrentExecution] and [PersistJobDataAfterExecution] from JobDetail.JobType via JobTypeInformation.GetOrCreate(JobType), not from the job instance, so the wrapper leaves both alone. TenantJob is not disposable, so ReturnJob unwraps IJobWrapper.Target, async-disposes the scope wrapper, and leaves container-owned jobs undisposed. Nothing in core/src or extensions/src type-checks context.JobInstance.
  • Blocker 2 (fixed). A finder exception returns TenantLookupFailedJob. That job never runs the workflow and uses the same IsRetryable / ScheduleRetryAsync path as before, and a lookup that returns null still fails loudly.
  • Build and tests. CS1729 is gone. Locally: 167/167 unit tests and 7/7 Quartz component tests pass.

Blocker

1. No tenant at all when a host configures Quartz itself (module path). This is a regression against main. In the module path, TenantAwareJobFactory is registered only by QuartzFeature (UseQuartz). UseQuartz is documented as "Only use this feature if you are not configuring Quartz.NET yourself", and QuartzSchedulerFeature does not depend on it, which is correct. So a host can run UseQuartzScheduler() / UseQuartzBackgroundActivityScheduler() with its own services.AddQuartz(...), or with a custom UseJobFactory<T>() registered after Elsa's. On main that host still got the tenant, because each job looked it up and pushed it in Execute. With this change the jobs no longer do that, so RunWorkflowJob, ResumeWorkflowJob and ExecuteBackgroundActivityJob run under no tenant, and EF stores and dispatch headers fall back to the default tenant.

Repro: the probe below passes on the merge base 617a31d5 and fails at this head with Expected "tenant-b", Actual null.

[Fact]
public async Task RunWorkflowJob_WithoutTenantAwareFactory_SeesTriggerTenantDuringStart()
{
    var accessor = new DefaultTenantAccessor();
    string? seen = "unset";
    var starter = new Mock<IWorkflowStarter>();
    starter.Setup(x => x.StartWorkflowAsync(It.IsAny<StartWorkflowRequest>(), It.IsAny<CancellationToken>()))
        .Callback(() => seen = accessor.Tenant?.Id)
        .ReturnsAsync(new StartWorkflowResponse { WorkflowInstanceId = "wf" });
    var job = new RunWorkflowJob(accessor, new Finder(), starter.Object, Mock.Of<IQuartzJobRetryScheduler>(), Mock.Of<ILogger<RunWorkflowJob>>());
    var (context, _) = QuartzJobTestHelper.CreateJobExecutionContext(
        new Dictionary<string, object> { ["DefinitionVersionId"] = "def-1" },
        triggerData: new Dictionary<string, object> { ["TenantId"] = "tenant-b" });

    await job.Execute(context);

    Assert.Equal("tenant-b", seen);
}
// Finder: ITenantFinder that returns new Tenant { Id = tenantId, Name = tenantId }.

Suggested fix: use the restored constructor parameters as a fallback. In each job's try, if tenantAccessor.Tenant is null and the job data carries a TenantId, look it up and push it, as main does today. Under the factory the tenant is already set, so the check costs nothing. Without the factory, the lookup stays on the existing retry path. This also gives tenantAccessor / tenantFinder a purpose again, instead of being parameters kept only for binary compatibility. Please add the probe above, or an equivalent for each job, as a regression test. I would not fix this by adding DependsOn(QuartzFeature), because that would take over Quartz configuration for hosts that own it.

Non-blocking

  • ExecuteBackgroundActivityJob can be orphaned. The job is built with StoreDurably() and deletes itself in finally. When the lookup fails, TenantLookupFailedJob replaces it. If the exception is not retryable, or the retries run out, it logs and returns without deleting the durable job, which then stays in the store. On main the finally still ran DeleteJob. Either delete the job in that branch for durable one-shot jobs, or let the fallback above handle background jobs inside their own try/finally. Retrying a background activity is new behaviour; it looks reasonable, but please call it out.
  • Stack trace. throw exception; (factory line 106) resets the stack trace. ExceptionDispatchInfo.Capture(exception).Throw(); keeps the original lookup frames.
  • Optional tenant services. The factory still uses GetRequiredService<ITenantFinder>() / <ITenantAccessor>() for any job whose data carries TenantId, including a host's own jobs. This remains the narrow, non-blocking edge case from Round 1. The thread reply says tenant services are no longer required, but they still are for that case.
  • Doc comment. If you take the fallback above, update the "unused and kept for binary compatibility" comments on the three jobs.

Threads

The four Round 1 threads are resolved correctly for what they raised: Blockers 1 and 2 are fixed, and the P2 was non-blocking. I've replied on each one with the Round 2 status and left them resolved. The 3.10 backport is still needed once this lands, because the milestone is 3.10.1.

CI

At the time of this review, ubuntu-latest, prove, import-rehearsal-tests, retained-testing-helper, CodeQL and the bot reviews are still pending on this head. GitGuardian, CLA, select-tests and solution grouping pass.

Compare the ambient tenant with the scheduled tenant.

If a job runs without TenantAwareJobFactory while the accessor holds tenant A, this return skips a trigger’s TenantId for tenant B. The job then executes under tenant A. The old unconditional lookup and push selected tenant B. Resolve the scheduled tenant when the IDs differ, and update the null-only push guards in RunWorkflowJob.cs Line 37, ResumeWorkflowJob.cs Line 38, and ExecuteBackgroundActivityJob.cs Line 32. The fallback must not treat every non-null ambient tenant as the scheduled tenant. (quartz-scheduler.net)

Keep tenant context active while Quartz sets job properties.

If a tenant-aware job reads ITenantAccessor in a job-data property setter, the setter runs without this tenant context. Quartz calls InstantiateJob, then applies job-data properties to the returned job. Keep the tenant context active through property assignment as well as construction. A job can otherwise initialize against the default tenant before TenantJob.Execute restores the correct tenant. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

[Elsa 3 Architect] On behalf of @sfmskywalker.

Architecture note on head 2741bfe. The factory direction is right; one gap and one simplification:

  • The Execute fallback brings the Timers and Cron triggers only work on the default tenant #9120 bug back silently. It only runs when the factory isn't installed (module path through QuartzSchedulerFeature, which calls AddQuartz() without the factory, or a host with its own factory). On that path the constructor dependencies were already resolved without a tenant, so pushing the tenant in Execute is the same too-late push that caused Timers and Cron triggers only work on the default tenant #9120. Per-tenant-DB hosts get default-tenant stores again, with no signal.
  • Suggested shape: keep one path. Have QuartzSchedulerFeature register the factory too, and only when no other IJobFactory is registered, so a host's own factory still wins. In the jobs, replace the lookup-and-push with a guard: if the job data has a TenantId and tenantAccessor.Tenant is still null, log an error and fail the job, saying the tenant-aware job factory isn't installed. That lets you drop FindScheduledTenantIfMissingAsync and the conditional using (... ? PushContext : null) from all three jobs.
  • A test for the module path (UseQuartzScheduler() without UseQuartz()) with a non-default tenant would cover this.

Not blocking if Lead wants the fallback as a temporary bridge, but then please file a follow-up so the two paths don't both stay.

Replace the per-job Execute tenant lookup with module-path factory
registration and a fail-loud guard. Quartz's default DI factory is
treated as replaceable; a host custom IJobFactory is kept.

Addressing the Greptile outside-diff note on QuartzSchedulerFeature and the Architect note #9121 (comment):

The per-job Execute lookup is gone. TenantAwareJobFactory is registered once per container from QuartzFeature, QuartzSchedulerFeature (UseQuartzScheduler()), and QuartzBackgroundActivitySchedulerFeature (same module path), plus the matching shell features. Quartz 3.15.1's default MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory is treated as replaceable; a host custom IJobFactory is kept. Jobs now fail loudly if the trigger tenant is missing from context instead of falling through to the default tenant.

Elsa 3 Code Review: APPROVE + HIGH @ 6ce7b8c

Code Review, Round 3/6

The Round 2 blocker is fixed. Every Quartz feature on the module path now installs TenantAwareJobFactory, so hosts that use UseQuartzScheduler() or UseQuartzBackgroundActivityScheduler() with their own AddQuartz get the trigger's tenant at construction and in Execute. The in-job lookup is replaced by a guard that fails loudly instead of falling back to the default tenant. Registration is small and easy to follow.

Verified

  • Round 2 blocker (fixed). I ran the Round 2 scenario through a real in-memory scheduler with the real RunWorkflowJob, and checked the tenant seen by IWorkflowStarter:
    • UseQuartzScheduler() with a host AddQuartz(...) before the module: tenant-b.
    • The same with the host AddQuartz(...) after the module: tenant-b.
    • QuartzBackgroundActivitySchedulerFeature alone, with a host AddQuartz() before or after: tenant-b.
    • UseQuartz() + UseQuartzScheduler() + a host AddQuartz(): one IJobFactory descriptor, and tenant-a arrives.
    • The new UseQuartzScheduler_WithoutUseQuartz_TwoTenants_... test covers construction and Execute for two tenants.
  • Quartz 3.15.1 registration. AddQuartz sets quartz.scheduler.jobFactory.type and calls TryAddSingleton(typeof(IJobFactory), typeof(MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory)) only when that property is empty. UseJobFactory<T>() calls Replace with ImplementationType = T, and ServiceCollectionSchedulerFactory.InstantiateType<T> asks DI for IJobFactory before it looks at the property. So the descriptor check is the right place to decide, and the probes confirm it in both orders.
  • UseMicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory(). When the host calls it before the Elsa features, the factory is replaced and the tenant arrives. See the non-blocking note for the "after" order.
  • No double registration. IsTenantAwareJobFactory stops a second Replace, and the factory derives from MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory rather than wrapping the resolved IJobFactory, so nothing can wrap itself. Host typed, delegate and instance registrations are kept, whichever comes first.
  • Guard and tenant-less jobs. The schedulers write TenantId with AddIfNotEmpty, and Tenant.DefaultTenantId is "", so default-tenant and single-tenant jobs carry no TenantId. The guard and the factory both skip null, empty and whitespace values. Through a real scheduler, a job with no TenantId and a job with TenantId = "" both start with no tenant and no throw. DefaultTenantAccessor is a singleton over a static AsyncLocal, so the factory's accessor and the job's accessor see the same value.
  • Guard failure paths. In RunWorkflowJob and ResumeWorkflowJob the guard runs before the try. The exception therefore reaches Quartz as an unhandled job exception: it is logged, no retry is scheduled, and DeleteJob is not called, so a cron or timer schedule is not removed by a configuration error. I confirmed this through a real scheduler with MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory forced in. In ExecuteBackgroundActivityJob the guard is inside the try, so the durable job is still deleted in finally. Execute_WhenTriggerTenantMissingFromContext_... asserts VerifyDeleted().
  • Round 1 and Round 2 factory behaviour. TenantAwareJobFactory.cs is unchanged since 2741bfe9. The tenant-from-trigger, tenant-from-job, missing-tenant, lookup-exception and real-scheduler tests still pass. The Round 2 non-blocking items are done: the durable background job is deleted on lookup failure, ExceptionDispatchInfo keeps the stack trace, and the doc comments describe what the constructor parameters are for now.
  • Build and tests. Locally: 182/182 unit tests and 7/7 Quartz component tests pass.

Non-blocking

  • Late UseJobFactory<MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory>(). If a host calls UseMicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory() (obsolete) or UseJobFactory<MicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory>() after the Elsa features, Replace swaps TenantAwareJobFactory back out. Tenant jobs then fail through the guard. The failure is loud and the message names the cause, so this is acceptable. A sentence in the UseQuartzScheduler XML doc saying that this call must come before Elsa's Quartz features, or should be dropped, would save someone a debugging session.
  • Public guidance names an internal type. The PR body says hosts with their own factory can "use TenantAwareJobFactory", but the class is internal sealed, so they can't. Either reword it (resolve the job inside the trigger's tenant, or let Elsa register its factory), or make the type public in a follow-up.
  • Release note for 3.10.1. On a multi-tenant host whose IJobFactory is not TenantAwareJobFactory, tenant jobs now fail loudly instead of running under the default tenant. That covers a host's own factory, and UseJobFactory<T>() called after the Elsa features. One-shot resume and background jobs that fail this way are not retried. This is the intended behaviour, but since it ships in a patch release it deserves a line in the release notes. In the same spirit, "Safe to call ... in any order relative to AddQuartz" in JobFactoryRegistration holds for a plain AddQuartz, not for a later UseJobFactory<T>().
  • Property-only job factory. A host that sets quartz.scheduler.jobFactory.type without a DI registration, and uses only UseQuartzBackgroundActivityScheduler(), now gets TenantAwareJobFactory, because DI wins over the property. With UseQuartzScheduler() that was already true on main, since its own AddQuartz() adds the default factory. This is narrow, and I would only mention it in the docs.
  • One tenant-id reader. TenantAwareJobFactory.ReadTenantId and JobExecutionExtensions.ReadTenantId both read the same key, but the guard also checks MergedJobDataMap and a TryGetValue fallback that the factory does not. One shared internal helper would keep the two in step and drop the branches that can't change the result.
  • Follow-up: lookup on the scheduler thread. NewJob runs the tenant lookup synchronously on the Quartz scheduler thread, once for each tenant job that fires. A slow tenant store therefore delays firing for every job, not only that tenant's. This was already true at Round 2, and the CodeRabbit thread covers it. A follow-up issue for a bounded timeout or a cached lookup would be worthwhile.
  • Workflow-job guard tests. The RunWorkflowJob / ResumeWorkflowJob guard tests could also assert that TryScheduleRetryAsync and DeleteJob are not called. That would pin down the "outside try" behaviour described above.
  • CS9107. serviceProvider is captured by the primary constructor and also passed to the base. It's harmless here; a private field would remove the warning.
  • CodeRabbit body note (2741bfe). The ambient-versus-scheduled mismatch it raised is handled: the guard compares IDs and throws when they differ. Its other note, that Quartz sets job-data properties after InstantiateJob returns and so outside the push, does not affect Elsa's jobs, which have no settable properties.

Threads

  • The Round 2 blocker thread on RunWorkflowJob.cs and the two non-blocking Round 2 threads are verified at this head, with replies added. They stay resolved.
  • The P2 thread on optional tenant services gets a status reply and stays resolved.
  • CodeRabbit's timeout on the blocking NewJob lookup is reasonable as a follow-up and does not block this change. Answered and resolved.
  • The generic catch flagged by code quality is intentional: any lookup failure must be deferred so the triggers don't go to ERROR. Answered and resolved.

CI

All checks on this head are green: ubuntu-latest, prove, import-rehearsal-tests, retained-testing-helper, select-tests, CodeQL (all languages), GitGuardian, solution grouping, CodeRabbit and Greptile. run-affected-tests was skipped.

[Elsa 3 Engineer] Clarification:

  1. Do not tell hosts to use TenantAwareJobFactory — it is internal sealed. Hosts that register their own IJobFactory keep it. A fail-loud guard then reports jobs that run without their tenant.
  2. Detection is not order-proof against a later Quartz factory call. A later UseJobFactory<T>() or UseMicrosoftDependencyInjectionJobFactory() replaces the tenant-aware factory.
