feat(studio): show log persistence mode in the workflow instance viewer - #9119
The instance viewer details panel (the Workflow section in the issue screenshot) did not reliably show the workflow's log persistence mode. Blazor already had a "Log Persistence Strategy" row, but it stayed hidden unless logPersistenceConfig.default.strategyType was present, ignored the legacy logPersistenceMode value, and could throw while rendering the panel when the JSON shape was unexpected. The React Studio preview viewer did not show the mode at all.
Solution
Both viewers read the same definition custom properties the runtime uses:
logPersistenceConfig.default (strategy name, or the expression when evaluation mode is Expression)
otherwise logPersistenceMode.default (Include, Exclude, Inherit, including numeric legacy values)
otherwise Inherit
The row sits with the other workflow settings. A malformed payload no longer takes down the details panel.
Verification
Steps:
Open a workflow instance whose definition stores logPersistenceMode.default or logPersistenceConfig.default.
Open the Details tab in Blazor Studio (Workflow panel) or the React Studio preview instance viewer.
Confirm the log persistence row shows Include, Exclude, Inherit, a custom strategy name, or the expression text.
Expected outcome: the mode is visible for both the current strategy configuration and older definitions that only store logPersistenceMode.
Automated checks:
dotnet test Elsa.Studio.Workflows.Tests --filter FullyQualifiedName~LogPersistence — 14 passed
vitestlog-persistence.test.ts — 2 passed
React localization catalog check passed
tsc --noEmit for the React Studio app passed

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Workflow instance details now display the log persistence strategy, including inherited, included, and excluded modes.
The displayed strategy supports current and legacy workflow settings. Expression values are shown as provided, while recognized mode labels are translated into English or Dutch.
Missing or unusable settings fall back to the inherited mode.
The workflow details panel now shows Include, Exclude, Inherit, or the
expression that selects the mode, including definitions that still store
the legacy logPersistenceMode value. The React Studio preview viewer
shows the same row.

The .NET and React workflow instance viewers now display log persistence modes derived from workflow definition custom properties. Both implementations handle configured and legacy modes, and the viewers localize supported mode labels.

Adds formatting for configured and legacy values, with tests for expressions, strategy names, numeric modes, and fallback behavior.
The details panel formats workflow custom properties and localizes Inherit, Include, and Exclude. A rendered-component test checks the legacy Include mode.

Passes workflow custom properties to instance details and displays the formatted mode with translations for supported labels.
A malformed log persistence strategy value, such as a type name consisting only of a comma, can crash the workflow instance details panel in Blazor Studio instead of falling back to Inherit. This is a narrow edge case, but it contradicts the PR's goal of tolerating malformed data, and the fix is a small bounds check.

Thanks for this, and for covering both studios. The fallback order (logPersistenceConfig.default, then the legacy logPersistenceMode.default, then Inherit) matches ActivityPropertyLogPersistenceEvaluator.GetDefaultPersistenceModeAsync. Removing the unchecked ((JsonElement)value).GetProperty("default") from the details panel is a real fix, because a definition without default could break the panel. Two things need a change before merging: the display loses the difference between an expression and a mode, and the Blazor reader is much larger than the data it actually receives.
Blockers
B1. Keep "expression" and "mode" apart before localizing and falling back.
Both readers return one string, so the callers can no longer tell an expression from a mode. That causes two wrong displays:
Blank expression shows a stale strategy. In Expression mode with an empty expression, FormatConfiguration (Blazor) and readConfiguration (React) fall back to strategyType. The runtime never reads strategyType in Expression mode (EvaluateConfigAsync only uses it when EvaluationMode == Strategy), so that workflow actually inherits. This happens easily in the editor: pick Include, switch to Expression, and leave it empty. The test case evaluationMode: "Expression", strategyType: "...Include...", value: " " currently pins Include. It should be Inherit.
Expression text gets translated (CodeRabbit raised this on both studios). LocalizeLogPersistenceMode and localizedLogPersistenceMode translate any result equal to Include, Exclude or Inherit, including expression source text.
Suggested direction: return a small result that carries the kind, for example record LogPersistenceDisplay(bool IsExpression, string Text) in C# and { kind: "mode" | "expression", text } in TypeScript. Localize only modes. Treat a blank expression as Inherit. Showing expressions with a prefix such as "Expression: ..." would also make the row clearer, but that is your call. Please update the blank-expression test case in both test files and add one case where the expression text is Include.
B2. Trim WorkflowLogPersistenceDisplay to the shapes the Studio actually receives.
The Blazor helper is 171 lines for one display row, while the React version does the same job in 53. Most of the extra size handles inputs that never reach it:
WorkflowDefinition.CustomProperties is deserialized by System.Text.Json, so its values are JsonElement. The only writer in the Studio, Settings.razor.cs, also stores a JsonElement.
The JsonObject, IDictionary<string, object>, JsonValue, LogPersistenceMode, int and long branches in TryRead and FormatLegacy are speculative.
The IDictionary<string, object?> case is the same runtime type as the IDictionary<string, object> case above it, so it can never run.
A version that reads JsonElement only (object, default, string or number), plus the B1 result type, should come to roughly the size of the TypeScript file and be much easier for the next person to change. Please keep the existing theory cases. They are good and will show the trimmed version behaves the same.
Non-blocking suggestions
Multiline expressions (CodeRabbit on both studios): the row collapses line breaks. DataPanelItemFormat.Code in Blazor and whitespace-pre-wrap in React would keep them. Optional, and simpler if B1 already renders expressions separately.
Other checks
Runtime parity: the strategy, legacy string, legacy number, null default and missing default cases all match the runtime evaluator, apart from the blank-expression case in B1.
Localization:Include and Exclude are added to en.json and nl.json, Log persistence strategy already exists there, and Blazor reuses existing resource keys.
Tests: the theory cases are clear and cover the important shapes. The bUnit test proves the row renders. Its stubs are fine for a component test.
The React unit tests, including log-persistence.test.ts, run in the green frontend-and-host job (pnpm test) on this head.
Advisory bots
CodeRabbit, instance-details.tsx:57 (preserve whitespace): valid, non-blocking. Replied on the thread.
CodeRabbit, instance-details.tsx:77 (do not translate expression text): valid, part of B1. Replied on the thread.
CodeRabbit, WorkflowInstanceDetails.razor.cs:90 (keep the expression kind, use the Code format): the first point is part of B1, and the second is non-blocking. Replied on the thread.
CI
All checks on this head are green: ubuntu-latest, frontend-and-host, prove, import-rehearsal-tests, provenance, retained-testing-helper, select-tests, the solution grouping check, GitGuardian and CodeRabbit. run-affected-tests was skipped. The verdict rests on B1 and B2.
A blank expression displays as Inherit, and expression source such as
Include is no longer localized. The Blazor reader only accepts the
JsonElement shapes Studio stores, and multiline expressions keep their
line breaks.

Handle an empty strategy name after splitting.
If strategyType is ",", Split returns an empty array and [0] throws IndexOutOfRangeException. The catch in ReadConfiguration does not handle that exception, so the instance details panel fails to render. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Check the split result before indexing and return null when it is empty.
Based on learnings: invalid configuration must fall back without throwing.
