Purpose

Persist WorkflowSubStatus.Cancelling before cancellation is dispatched, and restore the previous sub-status when an observed cancellation failure is terminal, without overwriting workflow execution state.

Scope

Select one primary concern:

  • Bug fix (behavior change)
  • Refactor (no behavior change)
  • Documentation update
  • Formatting / code cleanup
  • Dependency / build update
  • New feature

Description

Problem

Cancelling a workflow does not expose an interim sub-status, so callers cannot tell that cancellation was accepted until the instance reaches Cancelled (#5187). PR #7528 started this by saving full instance snapshots, which can overwrite in-flight execution state.

Solution

This continues @aidevelopers2's #7528 on current main, using conditional store writes instead of snapshot saves.

  • Append WorkflowSubStatus.Cancelling (value 7) on the core and API client enums, and map it to WorkflowStatus.Running.
  • Add a single store primitive TryTransitionSubStatusAsync on IWorkflowInstanceStore (replacing earlier mark/restore helpers). The default interface method returns false, so a provider that cannot do the conditional write fails closed. Memory, EF Core, Dapper, MongoDB, and Elasticsearch update only SubStatus and UpdatedAt. The row must still be Status == Running and match the expected sub-status; an optional expectedUpdatedAt compare-and-swap runs when a stamp is supplied. A transition into Cancelling still refuses an executing row.
  • Phase A mark scope: mark only Suspended instances as Cancelling. Pending stays on the pending-run path; Interrupted stays on InterruptedRecoveryScanner. Admission ownership uses the existing IWorkflowExecutionGuard.DemandUnownedAsync when that guard is registered. Executing or owned instances are not marked. Cancellation is still dispatched on the existing path for every cancel request.
  • A false result from TryTransitionSubStatusAsync is never followed by SaveAsync, SaveManyAsync, or UpdateAsync.
  • Restore is the same primitive with expected Cancelling and the mark stamp: the row must still be Running/Cancelling and UpdatedAt must equal the mark stamp. A later Cancelled commit is left alone.
  • An exception from DispatchAsync restores the previous sub-status, then is rethrown.
  • BackgroundCommandProcessor runs the in-process command once and does not retry, so a handler exception is terminal: restore, then rethrow.
  • The MassTransit consumer also restores and rethrows. This repo does not configure a consumer retry policy. A host policy decides whether to retry only after the consumer throws, so the consumer cannot tell a terminal attempt from the first of several. A retry cancels from the restored sub-status (documented as possible UI flicker: Cancelling → previous → Cancelled). The compare-and-swap does nothing if Cancelled was already committed. Do not skip restore to "fix" that flicker.
  • ProtoActor WorkflowSubStatusMapper / proto enum accept Interrupted and Cancelling (round-trip covered by tests).
  • BackgroundWorkflowCancellationDispatcher already wraps the full DispatchCancelWorkflowRequest, so PreviousSubStatus and CancellingAt travel with the command. Recursive child cancellation is unchanged.
  • No Studio UI changes. No outbox Cancel kind.

Cancelling is a new enum member. Older clients that deserialize the enum by name will reject it. This belongs in a minor release, not a patch.

Remaining limitation

A process crash after a Suspended row is marked Cancelling and before the cancellation request is enqueued can leave that instance in Cancelling with nothing to restore it. UpdatedAt alone cannot tell a lost dispatch from a slow one. Re-dispatching old Cancelling rows (or an atomic dispatch intent) is a follow-up, not in this PR.

Elasticsearch compares updatedAt as a round-trip string. If the cluster rewrites that value, the restore compare-and-swap fails closed and leaves Cancelling rather than clobbering a newer row.

Verification

Targeted unit tests on net10.0:

  • WorkflowCancellationServiceTests and CancelWorkflowsCommandHandlerTests
  • MemoryWorkflowInstanceStoreTests and the memory-store tenant isolation tests
  • DapperWorkflowInstanceStoreTests (SQLite)
  • MongoWorkflowInstanceStoreTests (including restore filter asserting Status == Running)
  • ProtoActor mapper round-trip across every sub-status

The changed libraries build for net8.0, net9.0, and net10.0. Elsa.Workflows.IntegrationTests builds on net10.0.

Steps:

  1. Cancel a suspended, unowned instance. The store row is Cancelling before the dispatcher runs, and WorkflowState and bookmarks are unchanged.
  2. Let cancellation finish. The instance is Cancelled.
  3. Fail dispatch, or fail the background handler before Cancelled is committed. The previous sub-status is restored and UpdatedAt moves forward.
  4. Fail the conditional update, or cancel an executing or admission-owned instance. SubStatus is unchanged, and cancellation is still dispatched without a full-instance save.
  5. Cancel a Pending or Interrupted instance: no Cancelling mark; existing dispatch / recovery paths unchanged.

Expected outcome: Suspended cancels show Cancelling before dispatch, success ends Cancelled, observed terminal failures restore the previous sub-status, and execution state is not overwritten.

Screenshots / Recordings (if applicable)

No UI changes. Studio color and label updates stay in a separate elsa-studio change.

Checklist

  • The PR is focused on a single concern
  • Commit messages follow the recommended convention
  • Tests added or updated (if applicable)
  • Documentation updated (if applicable) — public store XML docs and this description. No Studio docs.
  • No unrelated cleanup included
  • All tests pass — the targeted unit tests and the builds above. Full CI is the remaining check.

Original contribution

This carries forward #7528 by @aidevelopers2. The implementation was rewritten against current main (conditional writes, not snapshot saves), so the original commit was not cherry-picked. Authorship is recorded with Co-authored-by trailers for Zac Frulloni and @aidevelopers2.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Workflow cancellation now shows a “Cancelling” state while cancellation is in progress.
    • Suspended workflows can be safely marked as cancelling, with their previous state restored if cancellation fails.
    • Cancellation preserves workflows that are already executing or have reached a terminal state.

Write WorkflowSubStatus.Cancelling with a conditional store update before
dispatch, touching only SubStatus and UpdatedAt. Restore the previous
sub-status when dispatch throws or an observed background failure is
terminal, and leave a committed Cancelled row alone.

A crash after the mark commits and before dispatch is enqueued can still
leave Cancelling. That window is left for a later atomic intent.

Walkthrough

The change adds a Cancelling workflow sub-status and conditional sub-status transitions across the in-memory, EF Core, Dapper, Elasticsearch, and MongoDB stores. Cancellation dispatch can include the prior sub-status and timestamp. Failure paths attempt conditional restoration.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(runtime): persist Cancelling before cancellation dispatch" matches the main change. The PR persists WorkflowSubStatus.Cancelling on suspended, unowned instances before dispatching cancellation, and restores the prior sub-status on terminal failure. The title follows the conventional commit prefix and names the primary behavior. It does not mention the restore path or the conditional store primitive, but it does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description fills in the template's main sections: Purpose, Scope (Bug fix checked as the single primary concern), Description with Problem and Solution, Verification with numbered steps and expected outcome, and the Checklist. It also links issue #5187 and related PR #7528, and it documents a known limitation and a compatibility note. The Screenshots section is marked not applicable, which is acceptable because the PR has no UI changes. The Checklist marks 'All tests pass' as checked, but the author states full CI is still pending, so that item is slightly overstated. The template's Commit Convention section is not a required field, so its omission is not a gap.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed code supports [#5187]. Enum and mapper additions transport Cancelling; conditional store transitions persist it without overwriting execution state; dispatch metadata and restore logic handle cancellation failures; provider implementations and tests verify the transition. Interrupted mapper support preserves existing sub-status transport needed by the same cancellation paths. No unrelated feature or Studio change is present.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#5187] requires an interim Cancelling state that remains until cancellation completes and immediate UI feedback for the affected workflow instances. The PR implements the persisted WorkflowSubStatus.Cancelling transition for eligible suspended, unowned instances, restores the previous sub-status on observed failure, and adds focused store and cancellation tests. The PR also states that it contains no Studio UI changes. Therefore, the evidence does not establish the required immediate UI display behavior.

Resolution

Add reviewable Studio/API-consumer changes that display Cancelling for affected workflow instances, or provide independent reviewable evidence that this UI requirement is delivered in the linked work.

Thanks for picking up #5187 and continuing #7528. Since this adds a new WorkflowSubStatus member that older clients may reject, I agree it belongs in a minor, so I put it on the 3.11 milestone rather than a 3.10.x patch. Code review will go through it next.

Define the cancellable sub-status set and the millisecond truncation once.

IsCancellableSubStatus appears in six places: this service and five stores. TruncateToMilliseconds appears in this service, CancelWorkflowsCommandHandler, and DispatchCancelWorkflowsRequestConsumer. The copies must stay identical. If the service accepts a sub-status that a store rejects, the instance is dispatched without a mark. If a restore path rejects a value that the mark path accepted, the instance stays in Cancelling. Move both helpers to one shared place in Elsa.Workflows.Core, for example a WorkflowSubStatus extension class, and call that from every location.

Assert the field and value together, not a single digit in the JSON.

These helpers check rendered.Contains("8") for Cancelling, "2" for Suspended, and "0" for Running. In each check the expected value is one digit somewhere in the rendered BSON JSON. The rendered UpdatedAt date and the "wf-1" id also contain digits. As a result, the checks pass even when the code writes the wrong SubStatus or filters on the wrong Status. For example, UpdateSetsCancellingOnly still passes if the update sets SubStatus to Suspended.

Read the values from the rendered BsonDocument instead, for example $set.SubStatus == (int)WorkflowSubStatus.Cancelling.

     private static bool UpdateSetsCancellingOnly(UpdateDefinition<WorkflowInstance> update)

Add an exact ID check to both cancellation scripts.

WorkflowInstanceConfiguration does not map WorkflowInstance.Id as an exact field. Elasticsearch can therefore analyze the string field, and Match may select multiple IDs that share a token. Neither script checks ctx._source.id, so an eligible different workflow can be updated.

Assert the restore filter's Status value.

TryRestoreAsync requires Status == Running, but FilterRestoresCancellingGeneration does not check it. A regression that removes or changes this predicate can still pass the test. Add the missing assertion.

[Elsa 3 Architect] Architecture review of 7d71167. The direction is right: conditional writes instead of snapshot saves, fail-closed defaults, and the 3.11 placement. A few things I'd settle before merge:

  1. Stuck Cancelling rows have no owner. The PR names the crash window between the mark and the enqueue, but nothing on main ever looks at a Cancelling row again. InterruptedRecoveryScanner only queries SubStatus == Interrupted, and LocalWorkflowClient only runs Pending. So marking an Interrupted or Pending instance takes it out of the paths that would otherwise move it forward, and if the dispatch is lost it stays Running/Cancelling for good. Two simple options: let the existing recovery scan re-dispatch cancellation for Cancelling rows older than a threshold (cancel is already idempotent, and the restore compare-and-swap protects later commits), or mark only Suspended instances in this PR and leave Pending/Interrupted as they are today.
  2. One store primitive instead of two. TryMarkCancellingAsync and TryRestoreAsync are the same conditional update: expected status and sub-status, optionally an expected UpdatedAt, then set the sub-status and stamp. A single TryTransitionSubStatusAsync(id, expected, expectedUpdatedAt?, next, stampedAt) (keeping the not-executing check on the mark side) halves the code across the five providers, and it's the primitive other interim states (for example, user-task Completing) would want anyway. IWorkflowInstanceStore is implemented outside this repo, so every new member there costs.
  3. Retry flicker (minor). With a host retry policy on the MassTransit consumer, restore-then-rethrow means the UI shows Cancelling, then the previous sub-status, then Cancelled. That's acceptable, but please say so in the consumer comment so nobody "fixes" it by skipping the restore.
  4. ProtoActor mapper (pre-existing, minor). extensions/src/runtimes/Elsa.Workflows.Runtime.ProtoActor/Mappers/WorkflowSubStatusMapper.cs throws on any sub-status it doesn't list. It's already missing Interrupted, and Cancelling would be the second gap. Either add both, or confirm that the actor path never maps instance rows.

Phase A persists Cancelling only for suspended instances. Pending stays on
the pending run path and Interrupted stays on the recovery scan, so a lost
dispatch cannot take those rows out of the paths that already move them.
Re-dispatching old Cancelling rows stays a follow-up: UpdatedAt cannot tell
a lost dispatch from a slow one.

TryMarkCancellingAsync and TryRestoreAsync become
TryTransitionSubStatusAsync across the store contract and the five providers.
The mark still refuses an executing row. Restore is still a compare-and-swap
on UpdatedAt, and it leaves a committed Cancelled row alone.

The MassTransit consumer comment records that a host retry can flicker
Cancelling, then the previous sub-status, then Cancelled, and that skipping
the restore is not a fix. The ProtoActor sub-status mapper accepts
Interrupted and Cancelling.

Thanks for the architecture notes — addressed on 90b9aae17.

  1. Stuck Cancelling: went with mark-only-Suspended for Phase A. Inconsistent Workflow Cancellation Status Display #5187 is the suspended display gap; Pending stays on the pending-run path and Interrupted on InterruptedRecoveryScanner. Re-dispatch of old Cancelling rows is a follow-up — UpdatedAt alone can't tell a lost enqueue from a slow one, so a crash after the Suspended mark can still leave that one row Cancelling (called out in the commit).
  2. One store primitive: TryMarkCancellingAsync / TryRestoreAsync → TryTransitionSubStatusAsync on IWorkflowInstanceStore + Memory/EF/Dapper/Mongo/Elasticsearch. Still requires Status == Running + expected sub-status; optional expectedUpdatedAt CAS; into-Cancelling still refuses executing; default impl returns false.
  3. Retry flicker: documented on the MassTransit consumer (restore-then-rethrow under host retry → Cancelling → previous → Cancelled; don't skip restore).
  4. ProtoActor mapper: Interrupted and Cancelling added to the proto enum + mapper; round-trip test covers every sub-status.

Also tightened the Mongo restore filter test to assert Status == Running. Happy to take the recovery-scan follow-up if you'd rather expand this PR.

Thanks for the quick turnaround on 90b9aae17. Please keep this PR scoped to Phase A as it is now; the re-dispatch of stale Cancelling rows is better as a separate follow-up PR (also targeting 3.11) so the store-primitive change can be reviewed and land on its own. Code Review will pick up the new head.

Elsa 3 Code Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + MEDIUM-HIGH @ 90b9aae

Code Review, Round 1/6

Verdict

The design is sound. There is one primitive (TryTransitionSubStatusAsync), the mark is limited to Suspended rows, the mark and restore are compare-and-swap writes on SubStatus and UpdatedAt only, and the restore can never overwrite a committed Cancelled. Concurrency with a running workflow, the multi-node broadcast and tenant scoping all hold up. One blocking issue remains: the new store write sits in front of the dispatch without a fallback, so a failing mark now drops a cancel that works today. A small extra test also covers the default EF Core store.

Blockers

B1. If the optional mark throws, the cancel is never dispatched.

  • WorkflowCancellationService.CancelInstanceAsync (core/src/modules/Elsa.Workflows.Runtime/Services/WorkflowCancellationService.cs:108-114) awaits TryTransitionSubStatusAsync outside any try/catch. If the store throws (timeout, connection pool exhaustion, transient provider error), the method exits before DispatchMarkedCancellationAsync / DispatchCancellationAsync, and the caller gets the exception. Before this PR this path did no store write, so the same failure still cancelled the workflow. This contradicts the PR's own goal of dispatching every cancel request, and the mark is meant to be best effort (CanPersistCancellingAsync, lines 142-176, already fails closed to an unmarked dispatch for the guard; the mark itself does not).
  • This is more likely than it looks:
    • CancelWorkflows (lines 74-91) starts one CancelInstanceAsync per instance with no throttle. Bulk cancel by definition or version, plus child cancels, now means one guard check and one DB write per instance at the same time, which is the classic way to exhaust a pool.
    • Elasticsearch implements the mark as update_by_query with the default conflicts=abort (extensions/src/persistence/Elsa.Persistence.Elasticsearch/Modules/Management/WorkflowInstanceStore.cs:183-198, ElasticStore.UpdateByQueryAsync throws on a non-success response). A concurrent save of the same document by a runner gives a version conflict, so the mark throws instead of returning false.
    • With Task.WhenAll, one such failure also turns the whole bulk API call into an error, although the other instances were dispatched.
  • Reproduced locally on this head: a WorkflowCancellationService unit test with an NSubstitute IWorkflowInstanceStore whose TryTransitionSubStatusAsync throws TimeoutException. CancelAsync throws and the dispatcher receives no call. All existing tests in the PR pass.

Suggested direction (your call): wrap the mark in a try/catch that rethrows OperationCanceledException for the caller's token, logs anything else as a warning, and falls back to DispatchCancellationAsync without the mark, exactly like the !marked branch. Please add a unit test next to WorkflowCancellationServiceTests asserting that a throwing mark still dispatches once, without PreviousSubStatus/CancellingAt. For Elasticsearch, Conflicts(Conflicts.Proceed) on the mark and restore queries would also make a conflict read as "not updated" (false), which is the right semantics for a compare-and-swap.

Requested test coverage (part of this round)

EF Core is the default provider and has no test for TryTransitionSubStatusAsync. Elasticsearch has none either. I ran a throwaway probe against EFCoreWorkflowInstanceStore on SQLite on this head, and the mark, second mark, wrong-stamp restore, right-stamp restore, IsExecuting row and other-tenant cases all behave correctly, including UpdatedAt round-tripping at millisecond precision. So this is coverage, not a bug. Please add an EF Core test (SQLite is enough, WorkflowStoreScenario.CreateSqliteAsync in Elsa.Workflows.Persistence.ConformanceTests already has the wiring) so that a future provider change or DateTimeOffset converter change cannot silently break the compare-and-swap.

Other checks

  • Ordering and atomicity: mark, then dispatch, then restore on dispatch failure with CancellationToken.None is the right order. A failed restore is logged, and the row stays Cancelling until a resume, a re-cancel or the follow-up PR.
  • Concurrency with a running workflow: the EF, Dapper and Mongo filters require Status == Running, the expected sub-status and (for Cancelling) !IsExecuting. A runner commit overwrites Cancelling and bumps UpdatedAt, so a later restore is a no-op. WorkflowState.SubStatus stays Suspended, so resume and cancel still work from state, and WorkflowExecutionContext.cs:708 maps Cancelling to Running. Fine.
  • Multi-node: the MassTransit consumer is registered as a temporary (broadcast) endpoint, so every node runs the cancel. A node that cannot cancel may restore the row before the owning node commits Cancelled. At worst that is a short flicker, and the compare-and-swap protects the committed Cancelled. Old messages carry no PreviousSubStatus/CancellingAt, so they never restore. Fine.
  • Tenants: the mark and restore follow the TryMarkInterruptedAsync scoping in every store (EF query filter, Memory visibility, Dapper write scope, Mongo tenant scope). The EF probe above confirms that another tenant cannot mark the row. Elasticsearch has no tenant scope, as before.
  • Phase A stuck window (non-blocking, deferred re-dispatch acknowledged): with the background dispatcher the command sits in an in-memory channel, and pending commands are dropped on shutdown or deploy. So a row can stay Cancelling from the mark until the command runs, not only until enqueue, and the PR description should say so. Functionally this is not worse than today: bookmarks still resume, a resume overwrites the column, and a second cancel recovers through the unmarked path. The visible difference is that such rows show Cancelling and drop out of Suspended filters and of the dashboard counts (WorkflowDashboardContributor.cs:122,196). Fine for Phase A, as long as the follow-up re-dispatch lands.
  • Regressions in consumers: WorkflowSubStatus.Cancelling is appended, so existing numeric values are unchanged, and ProtoActor now maps Interrupted and Cancelling. The API enum gains a value, which suits a minor release (3.11). Blazor Studio falls back to a default color. React Studio does not know the value yet (see Advisory bots).
  • Side effect: every successful mark bumps UpdatedAt, which retention and "last updated" sorting will see. That is acceptable, but worth one line in the release notes.
  • Earlier review notes: all four are addressed on this head. Stuck Cancelling is limited by marking only Suspended rows, with re-dispatch deferred to the follow-up PR. A single store primitive replaces the earlier variants. The retry flicker is documented in DispatchCancelWorkflowsRequestConsumer. The ProtoActor mapper gained Interrupted and Cancelling with a round-trip test.
  • Maintainability: the shared WorkflowSubStatusExtensions and the narrow primitive keep this readable. Comments are clear.

Advisory bots

  • CodeRabbit, review on 8d24d7c: sharing the sub-status helpers and making the Mongo asserts robust are both fixed (WorkflowSubStatusExtensions, rendered BSON comparisons).
  • CodeRabbit, review on 7ec7ff1: the exact-id check in the Elasticsearch script is fixed in 7d71167.
  • CodeRabbit, review on 7d71167: asserting Status in the Mongo restore filter is fixed (FilterRestoresCancellingGeneration checks Status == Running).
  • CodeRabbit, review on this head, inline thread at WorkflowCancellationService.cs:114: React Studio lacks Cancelling in studio/react/packages/api-client/src/types/workflow-instances.ts:2 and in WORKFLOW_SUB_STATUSES (studio/react/dotnet/modules/Elsa.ReactStudio.WorkflowInstances/Client/model.ts:7), and the badge falls back to neutral. This is valid but not blocking. It is fine here or as a small follow-up. Replied on the thread.
  • No other bot threads.

CI

All checks on this head are green (build and tests, store tests, the proof jobs, pack, GitGuardian, CodeRabbit, CLA). run-affected-tests was skipped. The verdict rests on B1.

A store exception while marking Cancelling is logged and the cancel is still
dispatched without PreviousSubStatus or CancellingAt. Caller cancellation still
aborts. Elasticsearch update_by_query uses conflicts=proceed so a version
conflict is a failed compare-and-swap. EF Core SQLite tests cover the mark,
restore, executing row, and other-tenant cases.

Addressed Round 1 blockers on 4fe852e7c:

  1. B1 mark throw no longer drops cancel: CancelInstanceAsync wraps TryTransitionSubStatusAsync — rethrows OperationCanceledException for the caller token; any other exception is logged as a warning and falls back to unmarked DispatchCancellationAsync (no PreviousSubStatus / CancellingAt). Covered by Cancel_WhenMarkThrows_DispatchesOnceWithoutCancellingStamp.
  2. Elasticsearch: mark and restore update_by_query use Conflicts.Proceed so a version conflict is “not updated” (false) instead of throwing.
  3. EF Core coverage: EFCoreWorkflowInstanceSubStatusTransitionTests (SQLite) covers mark, second mark, wrong-stamp restore, right-stamp restore, IsExecuting row, and other-tenant. Those 6 + cancellation service tests (12) + workflow-store conformance (44) passed locally.

Phase A unchanged (mark only Suspended; no Studio UI). Ready for Round 2.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Filter the OperationCanceledException rethrow by the caller token.

The mark path at Line 120 rethrows only when cancellationToken.IsCancellationRequested is true. This guard path rethrows every OperationCanceledException.

DemandUnownedAsync can throw OperationCanceledException or TaskCanceledException from an internal timeout while the caller token is still active. The exception then escapes CancelInstanceAsync, and DispatchCancellationAsync never runs. The cancel request is dropped. This contradicts the design at Line 126: a store timeout "must not drop the cancel".

Rethrow only when the caller requested cancellation. Other cancellations then reach the catch (Exception) block. That block returns false, and the service dispatches without the mark.

Line 160 says an unclear answer "fails closed and skips the mark". Only the mark is skipped. Dispatch must still happen.

Elsa 3 Code Review: APPROVE + HIGH @ 34633f4

Code Review, Round 2/6

Verdict

Thanks for the quick and thorough follow-up. The round 1 blocker is fixed, the requested EF Core coverage is in, and the late CodeRabbit finding about the ownership check is fixed as well. I re-reviewed the delta since 90b9aae1 and found no new issues. Approving.

Round 1 items

  • B1, a failing mark dropped the cancel: fixed. CancelInstanceAsync now wraps TryTransitionSubStatusAsync. An OperationCanceledException for the caller's token still propagates. Anything else is logged as a warning and falls back to the unmarked DispatchCancellationAsync, the same as the !marked branch. Cancel_WhenMarkThrows_DispatchesOnceWithoutCancellingStamp proves a single dispatch without PreviousSubStatus/CancellingAt plus the warning, and Cancel_WhenMarkIsCancelled_DoesNotDispatch covers the caller cancellation path.
  • Elasticsearch version conflicts: fixed. The mark and restore update_by_query now use Conflicts.Proceed, so a conflict reads as "not updated" (false), which is the right compare-and-swap result. The Elasticsearch project builds cleanly on this head.
  • EF Core coverage: added. EFCoreWorkflowInstanceSubStatusTransitionTests (SQLite) covers the mark, a second mark, a wrong-stamp restore, a right-stamp restore, an executing row and another tenant, including the millisecond UpdatedAt round trip. These match the probe from round 1.

New in this round

  • Ownership check timeout (CodeRabbit, outside-diff note on 4fe852e7): fixed. CanPersistCancellingAsync now rethrows OperationCanceledException only when the caller's token is cancelled. An internal timeout from DemandUnownedAsync falls through to the unmarked dispatch instead of dropping the cancel. Cancel_WhenOwnershipCheckIsCancelledInternally_StillDispatchesOnce covers it.

Local verification on this head

  • Elsa.Workflows.Runtime.UnitTests: 562 passed (18 in the cancellation service tests).
  • Elsa.Workflows.Persistence.ConformanceTests: 44 passed, including the 6 new EF Core transition tests.
  • Elsa.Persistence.Elasticsearch builds with 0 errors.

Non-blocking suggestions

  • ConformanceWorkflowStateSerializer adds about 45 lines of stub members, most of them obsolete overloads, to WorkflowStoreScenario. It works, but if a lighter option exists (for example the real serializer, or an NSubstitute stub that returns "{}"), it would keep the shared scenario easier to read. Fine as is.
  • The two new NSubstitute tests repeat the same store setup (FindAsync, FindManyAsync, TryTransitionSubStatusAsync). A small CreateThrowingStore(Exception) helper would remove the duplication. Optional.
  • Carried over from round 1, still fine for Phase A: release notes should mention that a successful mark bumps UpdatedAt, and that a row can stay Cancelling until the follow-up re-dispatch lands if the process stops before the command runs. React Studio support for Cancelling is still a good small follow-up (see the open CodeRabbit thread).

Advisory bots

  • CodeRabbit, inline thread at WorkflowCancellationService.cs (React Studio does not know Cancelling): answered in round 1 as valid and non-blocking. Resolving it with this approval.
  • CodeRabbit, outside-diff note on 4fe852e7 (filter the OperationCanceledException rethrow by the caller's token): fixed on this head, see above.
  • No other bot threads.

CI

All checks on this head are green: ubuntu-latest, store-tests, the three proof jobs, both pack jobs, select-tests and GitGuardian. run-affected-tests and CodeRabbit were skipped.

Architecture note after merge (non-blocking, for the 3.11 follow-up):

  1. No tracking issue yet for stale Cancelling rows. The PR documents that a crash between the mark and enqueue leaves a Suspended instance in Cancelling with nothing to restore it, and the agreed fix is a separate PR, but nothing open tracks it. Worth filing one now so it ships in the same minor as this enum value.
  2. Those rows are hard to find today. Studio's instance-list sub-status filter (studio/src/modules/Elsa.Studio.Workflows/Components/WorkflowInstanceList/) has no Cancelling option or colour, and the dashboard contributor counts Suspended and Interrupted but not Cancelling. So a stuck row only shows up under the generic Running count. Adding the filter option (and ideally a dashboard count) is a small change that makes the recovery gap visible to operators until the re-dispatch lands.
  3. Keep this off patch branches. The new enum member breaks older clients that deserialize by name (as the PR says), so it shouldn't be cherry-picked to a 3.9.x/3.10.x patch.

Suggested shape for the follow-up: one scanner that re-dispatches Cancelling rows older than a threshold using the same TryTransitionSubStatusAsync compare-and-swap (no full-instance save), run alongside the interrupted-workflow scan.
