feat(studio): add the X6 BPMN designer, drawing only, on the modeling kernel - #9053
Step 2 of 9 for #8928, the X6 BPMN designer as a full editor. The plan is in studio/docs/specs/bpmn-x6-designer/plan.md; step 1, the modeling kernel, is #9050. Part of #8898.
This step adds the Elsa.Studio.Bpmn.X6 module. It implements the whole BPMN designer contract on the kernel and draws the document with AntV X6. It has no editing tools yet: the only edits are the contract's setBinding, undo and redo.
Scope
New feature
New module:studio/src/modules/Elsa.Studio.Bpmn.X6.
The descriptor X6BpmnDesigner (id x6) and AddX6BpmnDesigner().
An esbuild ClientLib pinned to @antv/x6 2.19.2, the version the Designer ClientLib already resolves.
Not packable until step 8: it draws but cannot edit yet. bpmn-js was kept unpacked the same way before it shipped.
Build and CI:
build_studio_clientlibs.sh builds the module from a new reviewed lock, bpmn-x6.package-lock.json.
studio-clientlib-build.yml runs the conformance suite and the Elsa import equivalence check against it, beside the bpmn-js run.
Tests:
x6.spec.ts checks what the designer draws.
playwright.config.ts runs each designer's drawing spec only against that designer.
Elsa.Studio.Bpmn.Tests covers AddX6BpmnDesigner.
Housekeeping:Elsa.sln and Elsa.Studio.slnf (regenerated by solution_groups.py), .gitignore, and the Studio project count in test_dependabot_discovery.rb.
Docs: the suite README, plus the plan's step 2 verification and the spec's drawing limits.
No existing module changes. Hosts keep bpmn-js unless they call AddX6BpmnDesigner().
Description
Problem
The X6 designer needs a module that a host can choose, and that passes the shared conformance suite as bpmn-js does. It must also draw what bpmn-js draws from the same document. That includes the content an older tool, or bpmn-auto-layout, puts on a collapsed subprocess's parent plane. bpmn-js shows that content on the subprocess's own page; the kernel keeps it where it is and marks it hiddenBy.
Solution
The kernel owns the document.
BpmnModelingSession loads, saves, binds, undoes and redoes.
X6 only draws the session's document, one plane at a time, and is redrawn from it after every change.
Loads are serialized, as the kernel requires.
Planes (planes.ts).
The designer shows the document's diagram planes. It also shows a plane of its own for each collapsed subprocess whose content is drawn hidden on its parent's plane. That content is assigned to its nearest collapsed subprocess, so nested ones open separately.
Three ways to reach a plane:
a breadcrumb;
the collapsed subprocess's button, or a double-click;
select(id) of anything on the plane.
Drawing (cells.ts, shapes.ts).
Each shape and edge is a cell whose id is the element id. Edges follow the DI waypoints exactly.
What is drawn:
events, with their definition glyph, catch or throw fill, intermediate ring and non-interrupting dash;
gateways;
tasks, with their type icon;
subprocesses, collapsed, expanded, event subprocesses or transactions;
call activities;
loop markers;
pools and lanes;
data objects and data stores;
annotations and groups;
sequence flows with a default-flow mark, message flows, and data associations and associations.
An element type the designer does not know is drawn as a dashed box naming its type, so nothing disappears.
The glyph data is copied from the read-only X6 view, so this module does not depend on a view that may be retired.
Overlays and markers.
Placement, colours (--elsa-bpmn-state-* and --elsa-bpmn-problem-*) and the state ranking are the bpmn-js designer's.
Badges sit at a shape's corner, or at an edge's midpoint.
They are kept across plane changes and edits.
Only drawn elements count as known, so a process is reported as unknown.
The spec's limits list what is not drawn yet:
vertical pools;
DI colours;
isMarkerVisible;
an element drawn twice on one plane, which is drawn once, at its first DI.
Verification
Conformance suite against the X6 build: 49 tests pass.
32 contract tests, optional markers included.
4 host tests and 4 preservation tests.
9 X6 drawing tests.
The bpmn-js run is unchanged. --list shows bpmn-js.spec.ts only for bpmn-js and x6.spec.ts only for X6.
Elsa import equivalence on the X6 designer's round trips: Elsa imports all 36 saved copies as it imports their originals. The one exception is two-process-duplicate-id, whose load reports dropped content.
ClientLib build:
npm run build typechecks and bundles at 140.5 KiB brotli, against a 250 KiB budget.
npm ci --force reproduces it from the reviewed lock.
.NET:
dotnet build of the module succeeds on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0 with no warnings.
Elsa.Studio.Bpmn.Tests passes 33 tests.
Repository checks:
solution_groups.py --check passes.
test_dependabot_discovery.rb passes, after the Studio project count goes from 101 to 102.
Visual check: I looked at screenshots of every fixture.
This found two bugs, fixed before commit: annotation brackets drawn as boxes, and edge badges placed off the edge.
Expected outcome: the studio-clientlibs job runs both designers through the suite and the import equivalence check, and passes.
Added an X6-based BPMN designer option in Studio, with diagram rendering, subprocess navigation, element selection, binding edits, undo and redo, and runtime state and problem indicators.
Tests
Added browser and integration coverage for the X6 designer, including diagram navigation, markers, read-only drawing behavior, and import-equivalence checks.
Documentation
Added guidance on building and testing either BPMN designer, along with notes on X6 drawing behavior.
… kernel
Step 2 of the X6 designer (#8928). The new Elsa.Studio.Bpmn.X6 module implements
the whole BPMN designer contract on the shared modeling kernel and draws the
document with AntV X6, with no editing tools yet:
- The kernel's session holds the document and its history; X6 only draws it,
one plane at a time, and is redrawn from the document after every edit.
- Content an older tool drew on a collapsed subprocess's parent plane
(hiddenBy) is shown on a plane of its own, as bpmn-js shows it, without moving
it in the document. A breadcrumb, the subprocess's button and select() open it.
- Instance-state badges and outlines, and problem markers on shapes and edges,
use the bpmn-js designer's variables and placement.
- Descriptor id x6 and AddX6BpmnDesigner(); an esbuild ClientLib pinned to
@antv/x6 2.19.2 with a 250 KiB brotli budget (140 KiB now) and a reviewed
lock. Not packable until step 8.
CI runs the conformance suite and the Elsa import equivalence check against the
X6 designer as it does against bpmn-js, and x6.spec.ts checks what it draws.

Explanation
The title names the main change: adding a new X6 BPMN designer module to Elsa Studio. It also states the scope (drawing only, built on the modeling kernel), which matches the raw summary, the PR objectives, and the description. The title follows the conventional commit prefix style used in the template.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Purpose, Scope, Description (Problem and Solution), Verification, and Checklist. The Scope section selects 'New feature' and lists the affected areas. Verification gives concrete steps, outcomes, and test counts. The template's Screenshots section is required for UI changes, but the description does not include screenshots or recordings. It only says the author reviewed screenshots of every fixture. The Verification steps also lack an explicit 'Steps' list format for the visual check. The template's 'Expected outcome' is present. The missing screenshots are the main gap, but the rest of the description is mostly complete, so the check passes.

Assert the rendered position after dragging in both modes.
The test calls loaded without readOnly, so it exercises only the default mode. It then checks saved XML and undo state, but never compares the cell position before and after the drag. A visual-only movement can therefore pass this test even though the graph currently sets interacting: false.

Summary
This PR adds an opt-in X6 BPMN designer backed by the shared modeling kernel, plus build integration and browser coverage.
The X6 designer draws BPMN diagrams one plane at a time.
Studio hosts can choose X6 without changing the existing BPMN default.
- A standard loop draws a loop arrow, not the sequential multi-instance bars.
- A complex gateway draws an asterisk, not the parallel plus.
- A compensation handler and an ad-hoc subprocess draw their markers, with
slots for every combination.
- A compensate event draws its icon: the glyph key now matches the key the
moddle type derives.
- A click anywhere in a label's bounds selects its element.
- Dispose leaves the host's content in the properties container.

Commit 22dba6c fixes all six findings. It also makes CodeRabbit's drag test cover both modes, and checks the shape's on-screen position against its neighbours as well as the saved bounds. A drag pans the canvas, so the shape's absolute position on screen changes but its position relative to the other shapes does not. The X6 suite passes locally, 53/53.
