The greeter in the installed sysupdate system uses the adwaita theme and not the elementary one. (At least for me, I haven't found an issue about this, does it apply to others as well?)
The reason for this is that /var/lib/lightdm is owned by root and not by lightdm (on the normal system it's owned by lightdm). This directory is used as them home directory for the user lightdm. I.e. all apps that run in the greeter want to put their cache/config/etc. there. They fail with permission denied and therefore a bunch of stuff is broken (e.g. dconf which is probably the reason for the adwaita theme).
Changing the owner of the directory to the lightdm user fixes the issue for me.
I thought #911 might fix this but it's still owned by root for some reason (though also nothing else broke so not sure why the config is even there?)
@jumpyvi I'm probably missing a bunch of background here. Do you know why the custom tmpfiles config is necessary? Also I found a sysusers config that manually creates the lightdm user and sets /var/log/lightdm as the home for lightdm, do you know what's the reason behind that?
Git blame unfortunately stops at a repo transfer so I couldn't find the commit where either was added :(
