Not enough free space error when overwriting existing file if free space is less than the new file size

What Happened?

I have a 16GB usb stick with a 10GB file on it.
If I attempt to overwrite the file with the same size file an error popup says "not enough free space".
This happens if the free space is less than the size of the file being overwritten.

Steps to Reproduce

See above.

Expected Behavior

It should not show the error regardless of free space available because no additional space should be needed for overwriting a file of the same (or less) size.

Probably because (at least on some file systems) the old file is only deleted after the new file has been successfully moved/copied. This may be the native behaviour of g_file - need to check the code path being taken.
