feat(settings): manage device clone isolation via general settings UI/API - #471
Replaces the DEVICE_CLONE_ISOLATION environment variable introduced in #464 with a general.deviceCloneIsolation setting stored in the system_settings table and managed through the existing GET/PUT /api/settings/general endpoint (admin-guarded).
The flag is read into an in-memory snapshot at startup, refreshed on every settings update, and on a 60s interval so multi-replica deployments that share one database converge without a restart. This also removes the operational burden of keeping the env var in sync across every API replica.
cloneIsolationEnabled() is removed; resolveDeviceUuid now takes an enabled argument. Heartbeat, sysinfo, auth-device and audit services inject GeneralSettingsService and call isDeviceCloneIsolationEnabled() synchronously.
.env.example and docker-compose.yml no longer reference DEVICE_CLONE_ISOLATION; docs/clone-isolation.md is updated to describe the UI/API flow.
Why
The env var was the only true feature-flag-style environment variable in the project. Moving it to the existing SystemSetting table (which already holds five boolean toggles) keeps configuration in one place and lets multi-replica deployments stay consistent automatically.
Test plan
npx tsc --noEmit — clean
npx eslint "src/**/*.ts" --fix — clean
npx jest — 46 suites passed (1 skipped), 553 tests passed (4 skipped). The clone-isolation integration suite now drives the flag through GeneralSettingsService.updateSettings instead of process.env.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Device Clone Isolation can now be managed through general settings in the admin UI or API. It is off by default, persists in the database, and refreshes automatically.
When enabled, device identity handling uses the configured isolation setting across device activity and audit records.
Documentation
Updated setup, verification, and rollback guidance for configuring Device Clone Isolation through general settings.
…/API
Replace the DEVICE_CLONE_ISOLATION environment variable with a
general.deviceCloneIsolation setting stored in the system_settings table
and managed through the existing GET/PUT /api/settings/general endpoint.
The value is cached in memory and refreshed on update and on a fixed
interval so multi-replica deployments converge without a restart.

Walkthrough
Device Clone Isolation is now managed through general settings instead of an environment variable. GeneralSettingsService loads and refreshes the persisted setting, and heartbeat, sysinfo, authentication, and audit paths pass its value to device UUID resolution.
Changes: Device Clone Isolation Setting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
General setting lifecycle .env.example, docker-compose.yml, docs/clone-isolation.md, src/modules/settings/dto/general-settings.dto.ts, src/modules/settings/services/general-settings.service.ts, src/modules/settings/general-settings.service.spec.ts
The general settings DTOs and service now expose and persist deviceCloneIsolation. The service loads the value at startup, refreshes it every 60 seconds, and updates its cache after writes. The setting defaults to off. The example environment file and Compose service no longer document or set the environment variable. The documentation describes configuration through the admin UI or PUT /api/settings/general.
UUID resolution in heartbeat and sysinfo src/common/entities/peer.entity.ts, src/common/utils/device-identity.util.ts, src/modules/heartbeat/*, src/modules/sysinfo/*, src/modules/device-group/device-tombstones.spec.ts
resolveDeviceUuid now receives the isolation state as an argument. Heartbeat and sysinfo obtain that state from GeneralSettingsService. The peer UUID documentation now refers to the setting.
Authentication and audit UUID paths src/modules/auth/services/auth-device.service.ts, src/modules/audit/*, src/common/utils/device-clone-isolation.integration.spec.ts
Authentication and audit services now obtain the isolation state from GeneralSettingsService and pass it to UUID resolution. The integration test configures the setting through GeneralSettingsService and tests enabled and disabled modes.

Moving device clone isolation into settings can silently turn isolation off for existing deployments that used the environment variable, which can merge or duplicate device records. The documented UI toggle is missing from the web frontend, and the transition and rollback behavior needs tightening. Resolve the upgrade path and docs before merging.

Explanation
The title "feat(settings): manage device clone isolation via general settings UI/API" matches the main change. The PR replaces the DEVICE_CLONE_ISOLATION environment variable with a database-backed general.deviceCloneIsolation setting. That setting is managed through GET/PUT /api/settings/general, and the change adds an in-memory cache with startup loading and a 60-second refresh. The title is specific, follows conventional commit style, and names the affected area (settings) and the interface (UI/API). It does not cover the caching and refresh details, which is acceptable for a title.

Restore the old isolation configuration during rollback.
If the original installation used DEVICE_CLONE_ISOLATION=true, starting the original image with the new Compose configuration leaves isolation disabled. Restoring the database alone can therefore create merged records again. Instruct operators to restore the original deployment configuration and environment variable too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Prevent replicas from using different identity modes.
After one replica enables isolation, other replicas can continue using legacy UUIDs for up to 60 seconds. A heartbeat on a stale replica can overwrite a legacy peer with another clone’s ID; later convergence cannot restore that identity. Coordinate the transition across replicas before accepting device writes, or read a shared authoritative state on those paths. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Documented as a known limit in 3b054ed. The 60s refresh window is inherent to the in-memory snapshot; the docs recommend enabling during a maintenance window so replicas converge before accepting writes. Reading the DB on every heartbeat was rejected as too costly for a flag that changes rarely.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@hashbk Understood. The maintenance-window procedure addresses the transition operationally without adding a database read to every heartbeat.
The mixed-mode risk remains, so this is a documented limitation rather than a code fix. Before device writes resume, all replicas must converge; 60 seconds alone is not a guarantee if refresh reads fail. I will not press for the per-heartbeat database approach.

Migrate the legacy DEVICE_CLONE_ISOLATION value during upgrade.
The PR removes the environment variable reader. No migration or seed reads DEVICE_CLONE_ISOLATION, so an upgraded database has no general.deviceCloneIsolation row. The read at line 69 then returns no value, and the cache stays at its false default. Deployments that ran with DEVICE_CLONE_ISOLATION=true switch to legacy UUID resolution without any warning. Records created in isolation mode use derived keys, so legacy resolution can create duplicate or merged device records.
Add a migration that reads DEVICE_CLONE_ISOLATION once. When no general.deviceCloneIsolation row exists, the migration should insert 'true' for that key. Setting the variable in docker-compose.yml alone has no effect, because no code reads it. Add an upgrade note to docs/clone-isolation.md that states how existing deployments keep their isolation setting.

Fail startup when the isolation setting cannot be loaded.
If the startup read fails, the service continues with the initial false cache. Once database writes recover, device requests can use legacy UUIDs until a refresh succeeds, even when the persisted setting is enabled. Propagate startup failures or block device writes until the first successful read. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Fixed in 3b054ed. onModuleInit now reads directly and lets errors propagate (fail fast). The periodic @interval refresh keeps its warn-and-retain behavior for transient failures.

Protect omitted settings from stale snapshot writes.
updateSettings reads current before starting the transaction. Two concurrent admin PUTs can therefore merge against the same old deviceCloneIsolation value. The later write can restore stale false after another request enables isolation. Read omitted values inside the transaction, or update only fields supplied by the caller and refresh the cache from the committed value.
This is a narrow, admin-only concurrency case. The same full-rewrite pattern already existed for watermark and the other settings before this PR.

Add a generation counter so a stale interval refresh cannot overwrite a
newer settings update, and fail module initialization when the startup
read of the isolation setting errors instead of silently defaulting to
