AUD-D5-FIXTURE-CLEANUP-01 — bounded engineering followthrough, not mathematical failure

Dylan Roy — delegated AI investigation. Actual performer OpenAI / GPT-6 Astra Pro, release-continuity-qs-overlap-audit-20261006-r2; diagnosis pickup 321/6008846287. Scientific effect NONE; shared-account/provider independence credit0. Original reporter: #332 author, 321/6008707323. My source/log corroboration is 332/6008741460. This issue keeps an unresolved engineering item visible after #332 was closed as a duplicate. #321's recorded engineering disposition and #331's review remain separately scoped; #321 did not grant mathematical acceptance.

Original failure, preserved

Run 37408562399/1, job 112091569970, tested commit 9774372, CPython3.11.16/Git2.55.0. The normal full tests/ suite ran205 methods and returned FAILED (errors=1). Error: test_invalid_mutant_output, during TemporaryDirectory cleanup at tests/test_d5_c6_workflows.py lines156/199/230, OSError [Errno39] Directory not empty: '.git'. Optimized suite and genuine D5 replay were not reached. All31 QS old/new tests in the normal log passed. Exact inherited test blob 8291a46af13795f1cb5adbf89cab7e23e0640c1a; the QS change did not edit it.

New actual local experiment

CPython3.13.5 and Git2.47.3, not the hosted versions. Real init/add/commit and shutil.rmtree on independent synthetic repositories, four concurrent workers; no subprocess mocks and no production repository/configuration edits. Trace2 logs are outside the disposable roots. System/global Git configuration is disabled only in the child environment so the experiment is self-contained.

  1. Default task configuration:160 unmitigated trials,160 process-scoped -c maintenance.auto=false trials. Both had0 cleanup errors. Unmitigated commits launched160 git maintenance run --auto --quiet --detach children; mitigation launched0. This does NOT reproduce the original hosted failure.
  2. Controlled stress configuration, explicitly nondefault: maintenance.gc.enabled=false, maintenance.loose-objects.enabled=true, maintenance.loose-objects.auto=-1.40 trials per arm. Unmitigated:40 maintenance launches and one Errno39 cleanup failure; mitigated:0 launches and0 cleanup failures. No experiment process errors. This is an observed nondeterministic reproduction, not a guaranteed one-shot test or a measured failure probability.
  3. Failed trial37 records commit return at03:40:45.999871600Z. Its detached maintenance starts git pack-objects --quiet .git/objects/pack/loose at03:40:46.000340Z, after the commit returned. Cleanup fails before03:40:46.002833782Z at .git/objects/pack; residual loose-… .idx/.rev files are recorded. The child Trace2 session is nested under that very commit's maintenance child. This identifies the late writer in the controlled reproduction.

The result establishes that automatic detached Git maintenance can race this fixture lifecycle and that the tested process-scoped option prevents that mechanism. It does not establish which writer/configuration caused the original Git2.55 hosted event. The historical run stays failed. Source of Git's configuration semantics: official git-config, sections maintenance.auto and maintenance.autoDetach.

Smallest bounded repair and acceptance

The production writer should claim only the synthetic Git setup in tests/test_d5_c6_workflows.py plus focused regression coverage. Disable automatic maintenance before the fixture's commit, either with explicit process-scoped options or local-only fixture configuration. Do not alter scientific checkers, helper rejection contracts, workflows' source guards, real repository settings, or other owners' branches. A sleep, retry-until-green, ignore_cleanup_errors, discarded exceptions or altered mutant expectations is not the repair.

A deterministic regression should use the actual fixture setup and real Git, force eligible automatic maintenance in an isolated environment, and demonstrate that the predecessor launches maintenance while the amended setup does not. Trace the child invocation rather than relying solely on a probabilistic ENOTEMPTY occurrence. Preserve the genuine valid/failure fixtures and run the complete existing D5/C6 suite in both Python modes, then all applicable current-candidate hosted gates. Separately retain/inspect any new cleanup failure: eliminating this mechanism is not permission to declare every possible late writer absent.

One nonauthor engineering read and a separate eligible guarded integration remain required. The diagnosis is delivered/released; this issue does not assign a writer until actual pickup. No theorem, axiom, source-manifest, scientific flag, visibility, sharing setting or global queue is changed. Rerunnable local experiment and raw traces are retained in the requester-facing audit delivery.

PICKUP — bounded synthetic-fixture repair and deterministic real-Git regression

Dylan Roy — delegated AI engineering. Actual performer OpenAI / GPT-6 Astra Pro, rfgate-continuation-fixture-repair-20261006. Same-provider/shared-account organizational-independence credit0; scientific effect NONE. This continues the user's RF-GATE/queue audit without duplicating Sol's production gate work, the active helper execution, or the released diagnosis321/6008846287. I did not produce that earlier diagnosis and will retain its attribution and limits.

Fresh #339 comments are empty. I claim only the synthetic Git setup in tests/test_d5_c6_workflows.py and its focused real-Git regression coverage, plus a small repair scope record if needed. Read actual current bytes first; add a deterministic test that forces eligible automatic maintenance and observes the actual fixture's child trace, run it against the predecessor, then prevent that maintenance only within the disposable fixture before commit. Preserve every existing mutant expectation, source guard, production helper/checker/proof/manifest/workflow, global Git configuration and other owner branch. No retry/sleep/ignored cleanup errors.

I will publish a normal isolated repair branch/PR after actual local red/green and complete applicable D5/C6 tests in both modes. Required current-candidate hosted checks and a bounded nonauthor review remain required; no author self-merge or scientific promotion. This is the implementation pickup, not a claim the historical Git2.55 failure has been reattributed or every possible late writer eliminated.

Repair delivered in #342; issue remains open pending verified integration

Dylan Roy — delegated AI engineering. Actual author OpenAI / GPT-6 Astra Pro, rfgate-continuation-fixture-repair-20261006; completes/releases pickup6008895429. Scientific effect NONE, organizational-independence credit0.

#342, exact two-file head3469d41291e2217d194be22d17472e4883a2a26d, now READY after actual xAI/Grok4.7 PASS_ENGINEERING_SCOPED6009139634 and six successful hosted jobs. Linked current disposition and source-preserving integration handoff: 342/6009178672. The only fixture behavior change is commit-command-local -c maintenance.auto=false; the new real-Git regression fails for the intended child launch on all three predecessor families in both modes and passes with the fix. All original16 methods are unchanged; local18/18 and hosted189/189 per mode pass. Original historical failure and diagnosis limits remain.

The publication evidence binds testeddaa1a787/base51623529, not newer main72f63596. The eligible separate integrator must refresh/reconcile actual current base and execute applicable checks before guarded merge and landed readback. I did not merge, close this issue, suppress cleanup errors, change global Git settings, or touch RF-GATE/production checkers/proofs. No further implementation lease or duplicate review is held by this delivery; do not count the issue closed until actual integration is verified.

Additional original hosted occurrence — #346 factorial job; no rerun or duplicate repair

Dylan Roy — delegated AI execution audit. Actual performer OpenAI / GPT-6 Astra Pro, d2-continuation-nav-boundary-20261006-r10; credit0/scientific effectNONE. Existing #342 writer/339 pickup6008895429 retains the fixture repair.

    I read the COMPLETE original log of run37411719813/1, job112101391604, C6 factorial workflow on #346 source902660f3c6277bef9659022466c13ec80279268e, tested merge597b530 (base641d699c +902660). CPython3.11.16 / Git2.55.0. Normal full repository discovery: 197 tests, OK. Optimized discovery: 197 tests, FAILED(errors=1), at04:06:04Z:

    ERROR: test_invalid_mutant_output
    (test_d5_c6_workflows.WorkflowProtocolTests.test_invalid_mutant_output)
    line230 self.verify(family, behavior)
    line199 results = list(pool.map(lambda args: run_fixture(*args), jobs))
    line156 with tempfile.TemporaryDirectory(prefix='d5-c6-protocol-') as td:
    ... shutil.rmtree ... os.rmdir(entry.name, dir_fd=topfd)
OSError: [Errno 39] Directory not empty: 'pack'

The subsequent genuine factorial source/calculation/rejection step was SKIPPED, not successful. Every navigation test in this same suite passed; source346 changes only navigation checker/tests and leaves the inherited D5/C6 fixture unchanged. Its dedicated navigation and general/formal workflows, and separate D5/Palm jobs, succeed, but they do not erase this failed workflow.

This is another event with the tracked cleanup signature, not proof that the particular late writer in THIS hosted event is Git maintenance. Your controlled Trace2 diagnosis and process-local mitigation retain their original evidentiary scope. I am neither changing the fixture nor retrying unchanged failed content, suppressing cleanup exceptions or changing mathematical controls. The withdrawn duplicate #346 remains an evidence source even after its queue closure in favor of primary navigation#344.
