Release cleanup: unblock #32, stray files off the code line, menu builds what is stale - #79
Merges develop in, which settles the .gitignore conflict.
Takes stray files off the code line
docs/design, docs/issues, the audit report, PORTRAIT-ROADMAP.md and 10 one-off dev/ scripts move to agents/develop (docs/archive, scripts/research), commit 41330ea9b. Pointers in code and docs follow them.
start all and start server never built anything, so a pull left the page on old code. They now run the check scripts/e2e/run.sh already had (moved to scripts/bundle-check.sh). No changes means no compile, and a failed build stops the start. Docker and production builds are untouched.
This replaces the dev-mode banner (d7643882c, c06a3ebda), which reached integration without a PR.
KB: docs/kb/start-build.md on agents/develop.
PR check behind the new hook
branch-shape.yml backs up the branch-shape git hook: stray files, and over 100 changed files. Fork-only: remove before the upstream PR.
Checked:lein test 1465 passed, cljs suite 987 passed, lint 0 errors, test-start-build.sh 12 passed. That test's failing output with the code broken is in bac1a9177. No changelog line: this is internal.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Starting the app now checks whether the client and styles need rebuilding and builds them when needed, helping ensure the latest changes appear without unnecessary rebuilds.
Documentation
Updated startup guidance to explain when builds run and how to use hot reload.
Chores
Removed design references, investigation notes, and diagnostic materials that are no longer maintained. Added automated checks for startup builds and pull-request branch shape.
origin/develop carried GitHub's merge commit for PR #29
(feature/homebrew-data-preservation); local develop already had that
branch's commits via a direct merge, so this reconciles topology only —
the resulting tree is identical to develop's before the merge.
Three untracked-file leaks showed up in the VS Code Changes panel as ten
entries with nothing to stop a "Stage All" from committing them.
- design_handoff_character_menus was a bare exact-name rule, so the newer
v1-design_handoff_character_menus/ (9 files) matched nothing. Wildcarded.
- No rule targeted *:Zone.Identifier. All ten in the tree today happen to sit
inside already-ignored directories, so this is defence in depth for the next
one that lands elsewhere. These break checkout on Windows (':' is illegal in
NTFS filenames) and previously contaminated the DMV fork via an evil merge;
guard ported from dmv PR #9, which never reached this line.
- */*.log matches only one directory deep, so root-level server.log was
exposed. Added *.log; no tracked .log file exists to be caught by it.
Nothing was ever tracked — this closes the gap, it does not clean up a mess.
They are on agents/develop now, under docs/archive and scripts/research. CodeRabbit's docs/design
exclusion goes with them: it kept #65 under the 100-file limit by hiding them.
…banner
./menu start and ./menu start server never built anything, so a pull left the page on old code and
the banner up. They now run the rebuild check scripts/e2e/run.sh already had, moved to
scripts/bundle-check.sh, and skip the compile when nothing changed.
Seen failing before it passed. With the out-of-date check removed:
FAIL a changed source builds the client: calls '' exit 0
FAIL a changed build config builds the client: calls '' exit 0
FAIL no bundle builds the client: calls '' exit 0
start build: 4 passed, 8 failed
With a failed build ignored:
FAIL a failed build stops the start
start build: 9 passed, 3 failed
Restored: start build: 12 passed, 0 failed

Walkthrough
The PR adds shared asset freshness checks to startup, adds a branch-shape workflow, and removes development utilities and design, issue, and audit materials. It also updates startup documentation, references, and repository ignore rules.
Changes: Startup build checks
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Detect and rebuild stale assets scripts/bundle-check.sh
Adds checks for bundle type, missing artifacts, and newer build inputs. Builds the client bundle or stylesheet when needed, with Figwheel and Garden process checks.
Use the shared check at startup scripts/start.sh, scripts/e2e/run.sh, src/clj/orcpub/index.clj, src/clj/orcpub/stale_bundle.clj, test/clj/orcpub/stale_bundle_test.clj, test/docker/test-start-build.sh, .github/workflows/docker-integration.yml, README.md
Startup and E2E scripts use the shared checker. The old stale-bundle banner and its tests are removed. A shell test covers build cases, and the Docker workflow runs it. The README describes conditional builds and Figwheel use.
Branch-shape workflow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Run the branch-shape hook .github/workflows/branch-shape.yml
Adds a pull-request workflow that fetches and runs the branch-shape hook, except when the pull request has the large change label.
Development and documentation cleanup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Remove local diagnostic tools dev/*.clj, src/clj/orcpub/pdf.clj, src/clj/orcpub/pdf/cards.clj
Deletes development diagnostics and stress-check scripts. PDF comments now refer to research script paths on agents/develop.
Deletes design, capture, issue, roadmap, and baseline materials. Artist-profile references now point to the archived plan. The review path filter for docs/design/** is removed.
Adjust repository ignore rules .gitignore
Adds ignore patterns for root-level logs, matching design-handoff filenames, and Windows Zone.Identifier artifacts.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review d7337
The changes have bounded development-workflow risks: startup can retain stale assets or choose the wrong bundle, and a failed build can leave Datomic running. Manual builds and process cleanup provide workarounds. Merge with owner awareness and follow-up, preferably correcting the startup checks first.

The workflow omits the pull_request edited event, so changing a PR's base to integration or refactor/main may not run the branch-shape check.
The PR may proceed without a branch-shape result despite containing stray files or more than 100 changed files.
This can occur when: A PR opened against another branch is retargeted to integration or refactor/main without a subsequent synchronize, reopen, or label event.

Update the pull_request event configuration in the workflow to include the
edited event, preserving the existing integration and refactor/main branch
filters so retargeting a PR triggers the branch-shape check.
Add a failing-stylesheet case to the start-build test.
The suite covers a failed fig:build run. It has no case where lein garden once fails. The current code returns 1 at scripts/bundle-check.sh:67, so the behavior works today. A later change that ignores a Garden failure would still pass this suite. A case that touches a style file and sets LEIN_FAILS=1 covers this path.

Extend the start-build test using its existing fresh and expect helpers with a
stylesheet-failure case: touch a style source, set LEIN_FAILS to trigger a
Garden failure, and assert that the garden once path exits with status 1. Reset
LEIN_FAILS afterward so the failure does not affect subsequent cases.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
A zero exit from lein fig:build or lein fig:prod is accepted without checking that the expected bundle was created and is of the requested kind.
Startup proceeds with a missing or wrong client despite reporting that the build succeeded.
This can occur when: The build command succeeds but writes elsewhere, leaves an old output intact, or does not produce BUNDLE.

Stop the started Datomic transactor on every exit after launch.
start_all launches Datomic, then ensure_fresh_build || exit $EXIT_RUNTIME exits without stopping it. The only cleanup trap covers INT and TERM, so a build failure leaves the transactor running. Register cleanup_on_exit on EXIT too, and clear it with the other signals on the idempotent path.

- trap - INT TERM+ trap - EXIT INT TERM

Fixed in 393c3ef, more narrowly than suggested: a failed build stops the Datomic this run started. An EXIT trap would also stop it on a normal REPL exit, which is a change of behaviour.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@codeGlaze You are right about the scope. My suggested EXIT trap would change normal REPL-exit behavior.
However, the supplied fix still leaves Datomic running on build failure. With set -e enabled, (exit "$EXIT_RUNTIME") terminates the script before cleanup_on_exit runs.
Pass the status directly instead:
cleanup_on_exit() {
local exit_code="${1:-$?}"# Keep the existing cleanup body.exit"$exit_code"
}
This preserves normal REPL-exit behavior and stops only the Datomic transactor that this run started. Please verify that a failed build removes that process and returns EXIT_RUNTIME.

Learning: Within repository "codeGlaze/orcpub", only for files matching one of ["scripts/start.sh"]: When reviewing Datomic cleanup changes in start_all in scripts/start.sh, preserve the existing behavior that a normal REPL exit does not stop Datomic. For a failed startup build, check that cleanup stops only the Datomic transactor started by that invocation. Do not recommend an unconditional EXIT cleanup trap as a build-failure fix, because it also changes normal REPL-exit behavior.
