Weapons table, item charges, the Rest box and casting from items - #74
The Weapons table, rebuilt, and everything charges led to: charges on the sheet, a Rest box, casting from charged items, and item builder fields for all of it, plus the generic plumbing Weapon Mastery needs.
What's in it
Weapons table: attack and damage tiles that roll, a result sheet that chains the turn's attacks, conditional damage from a + menu, main-hand and off-hand marks, a desktop Details column. Every SRD magic weapon's extra damage and once-per-dawn powers, on the sheet and in the PDF.
Attack mode: a Normal / Adv / Dis switch in the Weapons heading, and a long press on an attack tile for one roll; phones can roll advantage and disadvantage now. On phones every weapon picker opens in the bottom sheet.
Charges: 46 SRD charged items carry their charges, regains and spells. Pips on the sheet; staffs spend charges on their powers.
Rest box: first on the Features tab, plus a floating Rest button on the other tabs. Short and long rests, dawn and dusk, recharges rolled or typed, Undo. A long rest no longer counts as dawn.
Casting from items: Cast on the item or from the Spells tab's "From Items", priced in charges per level; Roll damage at the level cast, from SRD spell data.
Item builder: a Charges group (charges, "Recharges at", regains, spells cast) and a Weapon powers group for custom weapons (switches like Flame Tongue's, extra damage, effects with saves, against a creature type, melee or ranged, per-turn/rest/dawn uses, charge costs, next-attack advantage, extra attacks).
Weapon Mastery plumbing, data-driven: effects read as sentences with condition links, "Missed?" for miss damage, next-attack mode, once-per-turn extra attacks, an attack's own ability and weapon save DC. All eight masteries are tested as made-up item data; the real definitions come with the 2024 line.
A new request: the item builder's Charges group fetches /srd/2014/spell-rolls.edn (12 KB, static) the first time it opens, through the existing :load-srd.
Schema, all additive: custom magic items gain charges, casts, extra damage, effects and toggles (component records); characters gain per-item charge records and the dusk period.
Moves, no behaviour change: builder fields to views/builder_fields.cljs (with integration's :typed? dropdown), the Rest box to views/rest_controls.cljs; new code in views/charges_builder.cljs.
The card geometry baseline is re-seeded: one glyph per item card page, from the Title Case armor names ("Half Plate").
The two srd-2014 spells commits were cherry-picked from feature/srd-pipeline and will arrive again with it, identical.
Tests
After merging integration (2026-10-27): lein test 1353 tests, 0 failures after the card re-seed; cljs suite 900 tests, 0 failures; lein lint 0 errors.
Every new test was seen failing first; the failing output is in each test's commit message.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an interactive Weapons table with damage rolls, advantage and disadvantage, conditional weapon effects, and Weapon Mastery details.
Track magic-item charges, cast spells from carried items, and recharge items through rest and dawn/dusk controls, with Undo for rest actions.
Custom items can now include charges, spell casts, and configurable weapon powers.
Character sheets now display weapon attacks and damage more clearly.
Bug Fixes
Corrected save DC calculations so magic-item spell DC bonuses don’t affect non-spell abilities.
Daily uses now reset at dawn.
Documentation
Added guidance on magic-weapon damage and critical hits.
A weapon's damage is now a list of parts: its own dice, then each extra
an item adds and when it applies (every hit, a switch, against a creature
type, a natural 20, on a miss, by charge or once per rest), plus save and
other on-hit effects. Frost Brand, Flame Tongue, Sun Blade, Holy Avenger,
Mace of Disruption, Giant Slayer, Dragon Slayer and Vicious Weapon carry
theirs, read from the SRD 5.1 text. Nothing renders them yet.
Magic weapons state their extra damage as ::mi/extra-damage entries that
reuse the weapons' own dice keys, with one field per condition: while a
toggle is on, against creature types, on a hit, miss or crit, a minimum
rolled number, a charge cost, and a recharge period. Effects (saves,
healing, conditions), toggles, a weapon's own crit range and an item's
charges use the same fields. Every field has one value type, so custom
items can store them later. This replaces the damage-parts draft.
"On a critical hit" follows the attack's crit range; "when you roll a
20" needs the die to show 20, so a Champion's 19 does not trigger a
Vicious Weapon.
Items that recharge "at dawn" get a dawn reset. Finishing a long rest
clears it too, and shows the long-rest button for characters whose only
limited feature resets at dawn.
docs/MAGIC-WEAPON-DAMAGE.md explains the fields for content authors.
…-handed damage
The other eight SRD weapons with extra damage now carry it: Dagger of
Venom, Dwarven Thrower, Javelin of Lightning, Mace of Smiting, Oathbow,
Sword of Life Stealing, Sword of Sharpness and Vorpal Sword. That adds
not-against (never these creature types), attack-type (melee or ranged;
a thrown weapon is ranged) and a flat damage-bonus with no dice.
The PDF never printed a versatile weapon's two-handed line, because it
looked the dice up under the wrong key, and it printed Sun Blade as
slashing. Both lines now use the weapon's own dice and the magic damage
type, and the two-handed line uses the same attack bonus as the first.
display.cljc turns a weapon's damage into text in one place: its dice
("1d8+3 slashing"), each extra with its conditions ("+2d6 fire while
Ablaze", "+2d10 radiant vs fiends and undead", "+2d6 bludgeoning on a
20"), saves ("DC 15 Str or prone") and a one-line summary of everything
a weapon adds. Nothing calls it yet; the weapons table and the PDF will.
The character sheet's Weapons table is rebuilt as the v5 design's rows:
the name on one line with its caret, a grey line with attack type, range
and properties, a 1H | 2H switch on versatile weapons, an amber to-hit
tile with a "hit", "crit 19+" or red "no prof" strip, and a damage tile
whose strip carries the damage type (a dot on dark, a ribbon on light).
A weapon's extra damage shows on its tile or on lines under the row
("vs fiends and undead +2d10 radiant"), item toggles such as Flame
Tongue's Ablaze add theirs while on, the Net gets a no-roll tile, and
tapping the name opens the row's details. It fits a 390px phone and a
narrow desktop window, where the old table overflowed by 34px.
The PDF writer turned every character above U+00FF into "?", including
the bullet, which the PDF font's encoding has. SRD item text such as Gem
of Brightness ("The first command word...") printed its bullets as "?"
on the magic item cards; they now print as bullets.
The first three equipped weapons fill the sheet's weapon rows as before.
A versatile weapon's two-handed damage no longer takes a row of its own:
it is a bullet in the Attacks & Spellcasting text under the weapon's
name, with each extra damage and saving throw a magic weapon adds
("+2d6 fire while Ablaze"). Weapons after the third get one line with
their attack and damage, then their bullets. Magic weapons print under
their own name ("Flame Tongue"), with the base weapon added only when a
character carries two of the same item.
With a shield (or a second weapon) in the off hand, a gold "Shield in off
hand" pill sits beside the Weapons heading, the 1H | 2H switch on
versatile weapons is greyed and the opened row says why, and two-handed
weapons keep rolling but their tiles turn to amber outlines, the opened
row says "Needs both hands" and the roll result adds "(needs both
hands)". While the off hand is free, a versatile weapon's switch pulses
every 10 seconds for a minute to offer two hands, stopping once touched
or rolled, and only glows under reduced motion. The off hand is read
from what is equipped, the same shield the armor class uses.
Crossbow, Hand / Heavy / Light, Light Hammer, War Pick, Chain Mail, Half
Plate, Ring Mail and Scale Mail now read in Title Case like the rest of
the app's content names. Keys are unchanged, so saved characters keep
their items. Hide, Leather, Padded, Plate and Splint are left as they
are for now.
The weapon in each hand gets a small pill on its name line: a hand icon
and "main" or "off" (the off hand's icon mirrored), read to screen
readers as "main hand" or "off hand".
A weapon with anything conditional gets a + tab on its damage tile. Its
menu offers Roll damage, Roll vs each target (Holy Avenger "vs fiends
and undead"), Critical damage with all dice doubled (and Critical vs),
and each once-per-rest use, such as Javelin of Lightning's 4d6, which
reads "used" until the rest. It opens from the keyboard (Tab to the +,
Enter, arrow keys, Esc) or a right-click on the tile, and opens upward
on the last row.
Tapping a weapon's name now opens a card under its row: the full name,
its properties written out SRD style ("Legendary (requires attunement)
· Martial melee · Versatile (1d10)"), why two hands are blocked or
needed, a magic weapon's rules text, and the cost and weight. It
replaces the old list of fields, most of which the row already shows.
A weapon whose kind the character is trained to master shows a band at
the foot of its row: the mastery's name on an amber cap, when it
triggers, and a short summary ("Topple, on hit, DC 12 Con or prone"),
with the full rule in the opened row. A weapon with a mastery the
character is not trained in says so in its opened row. Nothing in the
current rules data names a weapon's mastery or grants training, so
nothing changes for anyone until the 2024 rules supply them.
On desktop the Weapons table has four columns, Weapon, Details, To hit
and Damage, with each weapon's attack type, range and properties in
Details instead of under its name, and slightly wider roll tiles. The
ctrl/shift hover hint for advantage stays.
Rolls a to-hit (keeping the higher or lower die under advantage or
disadvantage, and calling a critical from the weapon's crit range) and a
weapon's damage part by part, each with its dice shown, then the total,
with saves listed after it and never added. Nothing shows it yet; the
result sheet and card will.
Rolling a weapon now opens a result sheet at the bottom of the screen
instead of the message bar. A to-hit shows its total and d20, then a
Damage button and one per target ("vs fiends and undead"), or Critical
damage with all dice doubled on a natural 20. Damage reads one line per
part with its dice, then the total, with saves listed after it. The
corner tile rolls the next attack in place: earlier attacks fold into
rows, a counter tracks attacks per turn, and a turn total appears once
two attacks have damage. Done, the close button or a swipe down ends
the turn.
…her non-spell DCs
Adds ?save-dc (8 + proficiency + modifier); ?spell-save-dc is ?save-dc plus item spell DC
bonuses. Features whose own text gives that formula move to ?save-dc: Breath Weapon,
Intimidating Presence, Stunning Strike, Open Hand Technique, Tranquility, Quivering Palm,
Fist of Unbroken Air, Water Whip. Features that say "your spell save DC" (Turn Undead, Turn
the Unholy, Nature's Sanctuary, Draconic Presence) keep it.
The card's width already left a 16px gutter, but its padding was added on top, so it ran 12px
past the right edge of a 390px screen. srd_reference_e2e now checks the card stays on screen.
…uses
The schema stores used uses per reset period, and dawn and short rest were missing, so saving a
character that had used a once-per-dawn weapon power failed. features_used_save_test saves a use
under every period a weapon's recharge can name.
…onger fails a check
A ctrl-click to-hit on desktop opens a card with both dice, the unused one struck. The check on
the damage options read 'Damage' first, which a real natural 20 (1 run in 20) labels 'Critical
damage'; it now accepts either.
Items can carry a charge count, a rolled starting count, a regain (dice, a number or all) and
the spells they cast with a charge cost per level. A carried stack keeps charges per item.
Nothing on the sheet uses it yet.
Every SRD 2014 item whose text gives it charges now carries them: how many (or the dice they
start with), what it regains at dawn, and the spells it casts with their charge cost per level.
Checked against each item's own text.
…of Fireballs beads
Charges are stored per item in a stack, one record each (spent, and a maximum rolled when the
item starts with dice), so they save with the character. Necklace of Fireballs gets its 1d6 + 3
beads, each a fireball that rises a level per extra bead.
Other Magic Items shows each carried item's charges: a line of pips per item in a stack (tap a lit
one to spend it, a dim one to get it back), a count with minus and plus for large pools, and for an
item whose charges start as dice, roll them or type the number.
Staff of Power (+1d6 force for 1 charge), Staff of Striking (+1d6 force per charge, up to 3) and
Staff of Withering (+2d10 necrotic for 1) list their charged powers in the + menu with the cost and
what is left. Picking one spends the staff's charges; a power the staff cannot pay for is greyed.
…f Stars
A long rest resets long-rest and rest uses only; dawn and dusk become their own reset times (dawn
also brings back once-per-day uses, which nothing reset before). Robe of Stars gets its six stars,
1d6 of which come back daily at dusk.
What each rest and time of day resets (uses, spell slots, hit points) and which carried items
regain charges, rolled or typed per item, with a record of what came back. Also decides when to
ask whether dawn or dusk passed during a rest. Not wired to the sheet yet.
Short and long rests sit in one box at the top of the Features tab. A character holding something
that recharges at dawn or dusk also gets a time-of-day choice and Now; a rest taken without one
asks whether dawn or dusk passed. The result names what recharged, with the rolled amounts open
to typing over, and Undo until the line is closed.
Seen failing with no drop amount and no extra-attack marker on the item:
FAIL an-extra-attack-is-a-limited-use-in-the-menu :166 :167 :168 (3 failures).
Green: 19 tests, 56 assertions; weapons_table_e2e 73/73.
Topple, Graze, Vex, Sap, Push, Slow, Cleave and Nick written with only the
fields homebrew items have, each checked where a player meets it: the result
line, Missed?, the next attack's mode, the once-per-turn menu use.
Seen failing against three breaks (text-only effects dropped, next mode never
reported, the DC reference unresolved): FAIL every-mastery-shows-in-the-roll-
result :206 :208 :209 :210 :211 :216, Topple, Sap, Push, Slow, Nick, Vex.
Graze and Cleave go through paths whose own tests were seen failing earlier.
Green: 21 tests, 81 assertions. weapon-mastery-plan.md, step 6.
A custom weapon can carry extra damage (dice, type, on a hit, miss or crit, how
often, a charge cost) and effects (what happens, an optional save with DC and
condition, the same when, how often and cost), in the fields the SRD weapons use,
so the table, + menu, roll result and PDF treat them alike. Saved with the item
(schema); a half-filled row is left out of the save rather than failing it.
Seen failing against breaks, restored after:
half-filled rows kept, the dice bonus dropped, a save not making the effect a
save: FAIL a-custom-weapon-keeps-its-powers :78 :80 (JVM); cljs 2 failures,
typed-dice-set-the-damage-fields and choosing-a-save-makes-an-effect-a-save.
the power keys not saved: FAIL :78 :80.
Green: JVM 3 tests, 5 assertions; cljs 873 tests, 0 failures.
…s in a bottom sheet on phones
Normal took a wide segment; it reads "—" as the Rest box's None does, named
Normal for screen readers. On a phone the long press opens the modes in the
bottom sheet overlay the cast panel uses, the + menu's rows laid flat in it.
Seen failing on the code before the fix: FAIL Normal reads as a dash; FAIL in
the bottom sheet, on a phone (8/10). Green after: 10/10. The Advantage lookups
are exact now that Disadvantage's name contains it.
weapon-menu-sheet puts a weapon-menu in the bottom sheet overlay on a phone and
leaves it a dropdown elsewhere; the damage tile's + menu and the long-press
attack modes both use it.
…ck in Weapon powers; d20 for Normal
A custom weapon can have switches the player turns on (Flame Tongue's Ablaze),
and any power can apply only while one is on, only against a creature type, or
only in melee or at range; an effect can set the next attack's mode or grant an
extra attack. All saved with the item. A saved custom item's targets may come
back as a vector, so applies? reads them as a set. The mode switch shows a d20
for Normal.
Seen failing against one batch of breaks, restored after:
toggles not saved: FAIL a-custom-weapon-keeps-its-switches-and-conditions :97
targets read raw: FAIL targets-read-as-a-set-even-when-saved-as-a-vector :212
a removed switch left on its rows (cljs): 2 failures with the target break
Normal back to a dash: FAIL Normal shows a d20 (attack_mode_e2e 9/10)
Green: JVM 16 tests, 296 assertions; cljs 875 tests; browser 10/10.
Conflicts: schema magic-item strings take both (this branch's charge and power
fields, integration's indexed owner); pdf.clj takes integration's embedded fonts
(the WinAnsi filter this branch kept the bullet in is gone, so bullets print);
views keeps dropdown in views/builder_fields.cljs with integration's :typed?
and :class-name, and character_builder calls it there; events_test keeps both
sides' tests. The card geometry baseline is re-seeded: one glyph per item card
page, the Title Case armor names ("Adamantine Armor, Half Plate").
lein test 1353 tests 0 failures after the re-seed; lint 0 errors; cljs 900 tests.

Critical damage options take the kept d20, so a crit on 19 no longer counts as a
20 for 20-only extras; the roll sheet clears on a route change, like the Rest
result; answer-time-of-day, set-rest-amount and undo-rest do nothing unless the
stored result is this character's; the Rest box counts magic armor; a recharge
row that regains all shows "all", not an empty number box; MAGIC-WEAPON-DAMAGE.md
no longer says a long rest clears dawn or that the table does not show extras.
…sult
Seen failing on the code before 84733d7: cljs 3 failures (a-crit-on-19-is-not-
a-20: "2d8+3 +7" on both 19 and 20; rest-events-ignore-a-missing-or-other-
characters-result); JVM 2 errors (damage-options took no kept die). Green: JVM
22 tests, 83 assertions; cljs 902 tests.
