Reason: MiniMax's ordinary model picker and unconfigured session defaults can still select legacy M2 models even when Flash and M3 are available in the OpenCode runtime catalog.

Summary

  • Prefer MiniMax-M3.1-Flash, then MiniMax-M3, for ordinary text choices and both interactive/backend fallback selection. Apply the policy only to existing direct regional and known OpenCode/OpenRouter catalog IDs; do not synthesize models, prices, limits, or provider transport settings.
  • Check config documents and plugin metadata from the same server/directory before filtering. Preserve configured providers, custom aliases, unknown plugins, media outputs, and non-MiniMax models. Local manager plugin exemptions require exact ID/path and generated-source content verification; remote clients receive no local exemption.
  • Keep the full runtime model list for explicit requests, configured models, session history, favorites, recents, and variants. Refresh the custom-model editor example to Flash.
  • Add regression coverage for the actual manager wrappers and backend resolution through @opencode/client@2.0.15 over loopback HTTP, including direct/regional/gateway IDs, explicit legacy variants, image prompt serialization, and stored reasoning/tool content.

Validation

123 focused tests passed across seven files with repository-pinned Vitest 3.2.4, including existing model preference/resolver/provider/section regressions and the new HTTP tests. Shared catalog and preference code also passes strict TypeScript 5.9.3 checking against the exact SDK 2.0.15 declarations. git diff --check passes.

Validation used an isolated small dependency set and the exact published SDK artifact. Only icon rendering was substituted in the section tests; HTTP tests substitute configuration and viewport plumbing while exercising the real manager API wrappers, selection functions, backend resolver, and SDK serialization. No live provider inference was performed. External OpenCode-to-MiniMax provider HTTP transport and thinking/effort enforcement remain outside this app's verified boundary.

Full pnpm lint and pnpm typecheck were attempted but stop at missing repository dependencies (eslint and tsc respectively). Full dependency setup/build is paused under the shared host disk resource gate. Full application build and coverage were not run. Upstream CI requires a maintainer's ready-for-ci label or approval.

Checklist

  • Code follows project style (no comments, named imports)
  • TypeScript types are properly defined
  • Tests added/updated (80% coverage target)
  • pnpm lint passes locally
  • pnpm typecheck passes locally

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds shared MiniMax catalog ranking and fallback rules, verifies managed plugin files, and applies catalog policy in backend and frontend model flows. The model picker also includes runtime models when building its sections and resolving defaults.

Changes: MiniMax catalog and model selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog policy and selection
shared/src/opencode/minimaxCatalog.ts, shared/src/opencode/modelPreference.ts, shared/src/opencode/index.ts, backend/test/shared/minimax-catalog.test.ts
Shared utilities rank eligible MiniMax models and choose fallbacks. Catalog sorting and model selection use the ranks. Tests cover eligibility, variants, fallback choices, and provider-specific cases.
Managed plugin verification and backend application
backend/src/services/opencode/plugin-registry.ts, backend/src/services/opencode/client.ts, backend/src/routes/providers.ts, backend/src/services/opencode-models.ts, backend/test/services/opencode-plugin-registry.test.ts
The backend exposes verified managed plugins and applies the catalog policy when provider, plugin, and model-list locations match.
Frontend catalog enrichment
frontend/src/api/providers.ts, frontend/src/api/providers.test.ts, frontend/src/api/minimax-http.test.ts
The frontend loads model and configuration data and applies the policy when request conditions match. Tests cover filtering, fallback behavior, and requests through the local HTTP boundary.
Runtime models in picker sections
frontend/src/hooks/useModelSections.ts, frontend/src/lib/modelSections.ts, frontend/src/lib/modelSections.test.ts, frontend/src/components/settings/OpenCodeModelDialog.tsx, frontend/src/components/settings/OpenCodeModelsEditor.test.tsx
Runtime models can populate picker options and satisfy default-model lookups. Tests cover saved legacy entries. The provider model placeholder now uses MiniMax-M3.1-Flash.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bf005

If a provider's catalog lists only older MiniMax models, the picker would show no MiniMax models, and backend model resolution could fail where it previously worked. Apply the rank only when the provider has a Flash or M3 entry before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bf005

Automatic fallback can switch a request to another enabled provider when no preferred replacement is available from the original provider. Explicit selections remain protected, but unconfigured requests can acquire a different data destination.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: When an otherwise eligible provider offers only legacy models, the policy assigns those models rank -1 without checking that a preferred replacement exists. An unconfigured request whose available runtime default belongs to that provider can therefore fall through to another enabled provider. This changes the prompt destination compared with the base behavior, which preserved the available default. Valid explicit or configured candidates prevent this transition, but automatic fallback does not preserve the original provider boundary.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The destination-change concern is bounded to automatic selection with qualifying catalog provenance and no overriding valid candidate. A different destination must already be present and enabled in the runtime catalog. The inspected generation consumer passes the resolved provider reference with the prompt; actual sensitive-data disclosure was not demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An incomplete qualifying catalog can trigger the cross-provider fallback without an attacker acquiring additional privileges. Catalog availability is the trigger, not a demonstrated attacker-controlled source. Explicit selection preservation materially limits the concern, but does not cover an unconfigured request relying on the runtime default.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new metadata endpoint accepts no request-derived filesystem path and requires a valid session. It exposes verified plugin paths, not file contents. Registered remote clients do not receive the local verification method, and frontend requests for remote server IDs do not fetch local exemptions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Verification is recomputed and omits unreadable or mismatched files, but it is a read-time assertion rather than an atomic snapshot bound to runtime plugin metadata. Concurrent rewrites can make catalog provenance stale. The inspected consequence is ranking drift, not newly granted executable authority; deployment-level filesystem protections remain unknown.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve the original provider when no preferred replacement is available: retain its available legacy default or require an explicit destination choice instead of falling through to another provider. Apply the same destination rule to interactive and backend fallback.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Only hide legacy MiniMax models when Flash or M3 exists for that provider.

Line 40 assigns rank -1 to every eligible model that is not Flash and not M3. The code does not check whether Flash or M3 is present in that provider's catalog. Example trigger: the minimax or openrouter catalog lists only MiniMax-M2.7.

Consequences:

  • isSelectableCatalogModel rejects every model of that provider, so the picker shows no MiniMax models.
  • In ordinaryModelFallback, first is ranked, so selectable is empty. selectable[0] is then undefined, or it is a model from a different provider.
  • selectEffectiveModelRef with a ranked defaultModel gets no preferred model. It then falls through to the same empty fallback.
  • In the backend, resolveOpenCodeModel gets null on each poll. It waits for MODEL_LOAD_TIMEOUT_MS and then throws No configured OpenCode models are available. Before this change, it resolved the legacy model.

The PR objective limits the policy to existing catalog IDs. Apply ranks only when the provider has an eligible Flash or M3 entry.

+    if (!eligible(model) || !preferredProviders.has(model.providerID)) return model
+ const route = routes[model.providerID]
     return {

Add a test with a legacy-only provider catalog. The test should expect the legacy model to remain selectable.
