feat(runner): add reasoning_format target setting for Chat reasoning field - #12
Add an optional per-target reasoning_format = "openai" | "deepseek". The LLM client applies it to the encoded Chat request, next to reasoning_effort.
Assistant reasoning moves to reasoning or reasoning_content, and the other spelling is removed. If a message has only reasoning_details, its text fills the field.
An empty or null value under the other spelling is dropped. An empty or null value already under the target's own spelling stays as sent unless the other spelling or reasoning_details supplies text to replace it.
Config load rejects the setting on clients other than openai_chat, and it joins the duplicate-target check, so two targets on one model and client with different formats fail to load.
The desktop route editor's list of settings the server rejects on duplicate targets gets the new key.
Docs: one row in toml_schema.md, and the duplicate-target wording in the two other places that list the settings.
No change to ContentBlock, the translation crate, or libsy.
Why
A rebuilt Chat request always writes assistant reasoning as reasoning, and the spelling of the incoming request cannot say which field a different target reads. DeepSeek reads reasoning_content and wants it back on tool-call turns, so replay to it can fail. The configured target format wins over the incoming spelling.
Which issue: None linked in this fork PR.
Notes for reviewers
Start at apply_reasoning_format in crates/libsy-llm-client/src/client.rs; it is the only place that rewrites a body. Non-test additions are about 99 lines: 67 in client.rs, 39 of those in that function.
Known limit: Chat encoding drops signed Anthropic thinking before this setting runs, so that history reaches the target with no reasoning field and there is nothing to rename. This predates the PR; a test comment records it.
The setting is separate from the reasoning_format request parameter some providers use for response parsing; the docs row says so.
Test plan
A table test covers the config checks (each format on Chat, rejection on responses and anthropic_messages, conflicting formats on one model). Server tests send Chat, Responses, Anthropic and streaming requests to a stub upstream and assert the field it receives. Two desktop tests cover moving a route onto a model whose target uses a different format, and the note shown when a target changes model.
cargo test --workspace: exit 0 (it includes the desktop tests)
The Python suite exits 1 locally with 3 failures out of 179 tests. Two in tests/e2e/test_closed_book_proxy_integration.py fail because the Docker API socket is permission denied here, and they fail the same way on the base commit. tests/test_nemo_gym_run.py::test_interrupt_stops_only_owned_children[2-130] timed out at 20s in the full run, passed 3 of 3 alone, and did not fail on a rerun.
…field
A rebuilt Chat request always writes assistant reasoning as `reasoning`, and
the incoming spelling cannot say what a different target accepts. DeepSeek
reads `reasoning_content` and requires it back on tool-call turns, so replay
to such a target can fail.
Add an optional per-target `reasoning_format` of `openai` or `deepseek`. It is
applied to the encoded request in the LLM client, the same place as
`reasoning_effort`, so the configured format wins over the incoming spelling
without changing the protocol or translation crates. Config load rejects it on
non-Chat clients and on targets that share a model id with a different format.
Signed-off-by: ChethanUK <chethanuk@outlook.com>
…t reuse
An empty reasoning field counted as a real value, so a request carrying
`reasoning_content: ""` beside `reasoning: "text"` lost the text when
`reasoning_format` was set, and an empty field also blocked the
`reasoning_details` fallback. The Chat decoder already treats empty as absent,
so the setting now does too.
The desktop route editor keeps its own list of the settings the server rejects
on duplicate targets, and that list lacked `reasoning_format`. Moving a route
onto a model whose target set it rewrote the route's target instead of reusing
the existing one, producing a config the server refuses to load. Add the key to
both lists and to the note shown when a target changes model.

Send assistant reasoning in the field each Chat target expects
What Changed
Chat targets can choose whether assistant reasoning is sent as reasoning or reasoning_content, including when requests are translated from other formats.
Empty or null reasoning fields no longer hide available reasoning; text from reasoning_details is used when needed.
Invalid or conflicting target settings are rejected when configuration loads, and route edits reuse an existing target when required.
Impact
✅ DeepSeek tool-call replays retain assistant reasoning ✅ Chat targets receive reasoning in the configured field ✅ Route edits avoid duplicate-model configuration errors

Independent review of c9d406e against main. Verdict: REVISE, PR text only. I found no code change that needs to happen before this goes further.
Requested change
The PR body says "I did not run the full workspace suite, clippy, or fmt for this PR." The local gate log for this same commit shows cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test --workspace all exiting 0. Replace that sentence with what ran. The same log has 3 pytest failures: 2 in tests/e2e/test_closed_book_proxy_integration.py, which also fail on the base commit, and test_interrupt_stops_only_owned_children[2-130], which the log records as flaky under a full run and passing 3/3 alone. Say so if the local pytest run is cited. Fork CI is also green on this commit now.
While editing the body, add these two:
The test command it quotes leaves out -p switchyard-desktop, so the two new desktop tests are not in its evidence.
The signed thinking limit is only in a test comment. Chat encoding drops signed Anthropic thinking before this setting runs, so that history reaches the target with no reasoning field. That limit predates this PR, but readers of the body should know about it.
Correctness
apply_reasoning_format runs in send_encoded, the only non-test encode_request call in the LLM client, so it covers streaming and retries. It runs after omit_body_fields, extra_body and reasoning_effort, and only on Backend::OpenAiChat.
The target's own field wins, the other spelling goes, and reasoning_details is the last resort. Its text and summary handling and its newline join match reasoning_text_from_details in the translation crate. That helper is pub(crate), so the small copy is reasonable.
The config check rejects the setting on non-Chat clients and adds it to the duplicate-target comparison. The desktop lists gain the key too. That desktop change goes beyond the runner and client, but it is in scope: without it, moving a route could write a config the server refuses to load, and the new test loads the edited config to prove it does not.
I ran the function unchanged in a scratch crate on edge cases. Results:
Input (format)
Sent
reasoning: "" only (deepseek)
field removed
reasoning_content: "" only (deepseek)
reasoning_content: "" kept
reasoning_content: null only (deepseek)
reasoning_content: null kept
summary and text details (deepseek)
reasoning_content: "S\nT"
encrypted-only details (deepseek)
no field added
reasoning: {"x":1} (deepseek)
reasoning_content: {"x":1}
messages is not an array
body unchanged
Non-blocking notes
"Empty and null values count as absent" is not quite what happens. An empty or null value in the target's own field stays on the wire, as the table shows. It is the caller's own value and unset behaves the same, so I would not change the code. Adjusting the sentence is enough; the alternative is removing the field, which is one more branch and one more table row.
A non-string value is renamed as is. The decoder would ignore it, so this only forwards what the caller sent under another name.
No table row has more than one reasoning_details item, so the newline join is covered only by my probe above. One row would pin it.
Tests
The server table test sends Chat, Responses, Anthropic and streaming requests to a stub upstream and asserts the body it receives. That is the right boundary. The local mutation log shows the tests fail when .with_reasoning_format, the assistant-only guard or the duplicate-check clause is removed; I read that log and did not repeat the mutations.
Fork CI: every check succeeded except GitHub Pages deploy, which was skipped. Merge state is CLEAN.
I did not run the full workspace suite or pytest myself; for those I rely on the local gate log and CI. I did not test against a real DeepSeek endpoint.
Scope and PR text
Non-test additions are 99 lines by my count (client.rs 67, config.rs 16, server_config.rs 10, README, lib.rs and docs 6), under the 100-line threshold in CONTRIBUTING.md.
No change to ContentBlock, the translation crate or libsy.
Title, body and both commit messages have no issue reference, upstream link or mention. Both commits carry a DCO sign-off, and the "which issue" line reads "None linked in this fork PR."
The branch is one commit behind main. That commit only touches the FFI crate, so it does not overlap this change.

Walkthrough
Adds an optional target setting that selects whether OpenAI Chat assistant reasoning uses reasoning or reasoning_content. The client normalizes outbound assistant messages, and target configuration validates and compares the setting.

Summary
Model setting and outbound normalization crates/libsy-llm-client/src/client.rs, crates/libsy-llm-client/src/lib.rs, crates/libsy-llm-client/README.md, crates/switchyard-server/tests/server.rs
Adds and exports ReasoningFormat, and adds an optional ModelConfig setting. For configured OpenAI Chat requests, assistant reasoning moves to the selected field; the alternate field is removed. Nonempty selected values take precedence, with reasoning_details text and summary as a fallback. The integration test covers field handling across inbound APIs and streaming.
Target configuration and matching
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Target validation and setting propagation crates/switchyard-runner/src/config.rs
Adds optional target reasoning_format, restricts it to openai_chat, and passes it to model configuration. Targets sharing a client and model ID must have matching formats. Tests cover accepted and rejected values and same-model configurations.
Desktop target matching and configuration guidance crates/switchyard-desktop/src/server_config.rs, docs/reference/toml_schema.md, docs/operations/troubleshooting.md, docs/routing_algorithms/model_selection.md
Desktop target matching and moved-target notes now include reasoning_format. Tests cover conflicting settings and moved-target notes. The reference and troubleshooting documentation describe the setting and its same-model constraints.
The change is mergeable with a small follow-up: remove empty selected reasoning fields when no replacement exists. Such fields currently remain in outbound requests, but no upstream failure is established.

Remove an empty selected reasoning field when no replacement exists.
When reasoning_format = "deepseek" and an assistant message contains only reasoning_content = "" or null, the helper leaves that field in the outbound message. Remove it when no replacement value exists.

Follow-up review of the current PR body against gate-round2.log and the code at c9d406e. Verdict: APPROVE. The body matches what I could check, and I have no required changes.

What I found
Local gate on c9d406e: fmt, clippy, workspace tests exit 0
The log's EXIT line reads fmt=0 clippy=0 cargo_test=0. The log header names HEAD c9d406e.
Python suite exits 1, 3 failures of 179
Log: 3 failed, 176 passed, 2 subtests passed.
Two e2e failures are Docker socket permission denied and also fail on base
Log shows permission denied while trying to connect to the docker API for both. The base run fails the same two ids.
test_interrupt_stops_only_owned_children[2-130] timed out at 20s, passed 3 of 3 alone, did not fail on rerun
Log shows timed out after 20 seconds in the full run. Line 7 records 3/3 in isolation. The branch rerun shows 2 failed, 177 passed, the same two ids as base.
I reran it: exit 0, 2 tests ran (the config table test and the server table test).
cargo test -p switchyard-desktop moving_a exits 0
I reran it: exit 0, 2 tests passed.
The workspace run includes the desktop tests
The log lists both moving_a_* desktop tests as ok.
About 99 non-test lines, most in apply_reasoning_format
git diff --numstat gives client.rs +67 (function body is most of it) plus the config, desktop, README, lib.rs and docs lines. This matches the 99 in the log header.
Behavior of empty and null values
Read apply_reasoning_format. The other spelling is removed and kept only if non-empty and non-null. A present value in the target field wins. An empty or null value in the target field is replaced only when the other spelling or reasoning_details supplies text. This matches the body sentence.
Config rejects the setting off openai_chat, and it joins the duplicate check
Both are in config.rs, and the table test covers responses, anthropic, differing formats, and one format unset.
The encoder keeps only signature: None reasoning blocks in that path. A test comment in server.rs records the limit.
Desktop key lists gain the key
REQUEST_SETTINGS and TARGET_SETTINGS both include reasoning_format, and the note text names it.
No issue reference, upstream link or mention
The body, title and both commit headlines have none. The "Which issue" line reads "None linked in this fork PR."
Notes, not blocking
The head is now 5 commits behind main (fetched just now). I did not rebase or rerun the gate on a merged tree, so the gate evidence is for c9d406e only.
Fork CI on this head: every check succeeded except Deploy to GitHub Pages, which was skipped.
The body says the real DeepSeek endpoint was not tested. That is true and stated.
I did not edit anything, did not run the full workspace suite or pytest myself, and relied on the gate log for those.
