Describe your changes

Previously, new riders received no automatic SMS when granted portal access. The welcome message (stored as @initial_message) existed in Messaging but was only sent lazily — prepended to the first campaign SMS dispatched to a rider via maybe_send_initial_message/2. This meant riders who hadn't yet been assigned a delivery would have no idea which number to expect Brigade messages from.

Changes:

  • Updated @initial_message text: added "about specific deliveries" to the questions line and removed the reference to the old Brigade number
  • Added Messaging.send_welcome_sms/2, a public function that sends the welcome SMS immediately, saves it as an SmsMessage record, and sets initial_message_sent: true on the rider's flags. Follows the same opts \ [] arity as new_sms_message/2 to allow callers to pass sent_by: or override the body if needed
  • Wired send_welcome_sms/2 into MailchimpImporter.create_or_update/1 on the nil (new rider) path, firing immediately after create_rider_with_user succeeds
  • Added test covering the full path: Mailchimp sync → new rider created → welcome SMS saved to DB with correct recipient and body

Why maybe_send_initial_message/2 is retained:
The lazy fallback is kept intentionally to cover legacy rider-only records that predate this change. These riders have initial_message_sent: false and opt_in_to_new_number: true but were never sent the welcome SMS because they entered the system before send_welcome_sms existed. For these riders, maybe_send_initial_message will still fire when their first campaign SMS goes out. Once all legacy riders have initial_message_sent: true, the lazy path can be removed.

Possible Expansions

Few doc links are scattered across the codebase today, requiring a tech team deploy to change. A dispatcher-facing settings UI backed by a database table would let authorised users update any doc link directly - no code change, no deployment needed.

📝 Walkthrough

The welcome SMS text now includes a new-rider guide URL and a general-contact email. A new messaging function sends and records the SMS. The Mailchimp importer sends it after creating a rider. A public redirect route serves the configured guide URL.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Welcome message and guide link
lib/bike_brigade/messaging.ex, config/config.exs, lib/bike_brigade_web/controllers/redirect_controller.ex, lib/bike_brigade_web/router.ex
The default SMS text is revised. send_welcome_sms/2 sends and records the message, then marks the initial message as sent after successful operations. The /new-rider-guide route redirects to the configured guide URL and raises if the URL is not configured.
Mailchimp import integration
lib/bike_brigade/tasks/mailchimp_importer.ex, test/bike_brigade/importers/mailchimp_importer_test.exs
After creating a new rider, the importer sends a welcome SMS and returns the rider only if sending succeeds. The test checks for an outgoing SMS with the expected greeting.

Dispatcher-enabled riders may miss the welcome SMS, while import failures can hide a missed message or cause a duplicate after rollback. The requested coverage and failure handling should be addressed before merge.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title clearly describes the main behavior change: sending a welcome SMS to new riders after portal signup. It is slightly broader than the implemented Mailchimp import path but remains directly related.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, retained fallback behavior, testing, and linked issue. The unchecked product-update item is non-critical, so the description is sufficiently complete.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The welcome message, SMS sending function, Mailchimp integration, and test directly support issue #537. The guide URL and redirect route support the guide link added to the welcome SMS. The retained lazy fallback supports legacy riders. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #537 requires an immediate welcome SMS on both portal-access paths. The Mailchimp path sends Messaging.send_welcome_sms/2 after rider creation and records the outbound SmsMessage. Accounts.create_user_for_rider/1 still only inserts the user. The dispatcher path therefore has no immediate welcome SMS. The existing maybe_send_initial_message/2 path sends lazily with the first campaign SMS, so it does not satisfy the dispatcher requirement. No automated dispatcher-path test is reported.

Resolution

Send the welcome SMS immediately after successful dispatcher account creation, directly or through the shared account-creation hook. Add an automated test that verifies the dispatcher path saves the outbound SmsMessage with the expected recipient and body. Preserve the existing Mailchimp behavior.
