Community Fridge CRUD Operations & Test Coverage

Implementation of complete CRUD operations and comprehensive test coverage for the Community Fridge feature.

Overview

This PR adds full CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) support for community fridges with a comprehensive test suite ensuring robust functionality and maintainability.

Changes

Core Features (lib/bike_brigade/locations.ex)

  • CRUD Operations: Implemented full lifecycle management for community fridges
    • create_community_fridge/1 - Create new community fridges with validation
    • get_community_fridge!/1 - Retrieve a specific community fridge
    • update_community_fridge/2 - Update community fridge details
    • delete_community_fridge/1 - Delete community fridges
    • list_community_fridges/0 - List all community fridges ordered by status and name
    • change_community_fridge/2 - Generate changesets for form operations

Test Fixtures (test/support/fixtures.ex)

persisted_location Fixture

fixture(:persisted_location, %{address: "123 Test St", city: "Toronto"})
  • Inserts a Location record into the database
  • Accepts attribute overrides via map merge
  • Complements the existing location fixture (which returns an in-memory map)
  • Required by community fridges which have a location_id foreign key

community_fridge Fixture

fixture(:community_fridge, %{name: "Downtown Fridge", active: true})
  • Lazily creates a persisted location if location_id not provided
  • Merges default values with caller-provided attributes
  • Returns a fully persisted community fridge ready for testing
  • Eliminates boilerplate location setup in tests

Test Suite (test/bike_brigade/locations_test.exs)

9 Comprehensive Tests across two describe blocks:

community_fridges Describe Block (with setup)

  • Setup: Creates a single community fridge fixture reused across 7 tests via context injection
  • Tests:
    1. list_community_fridges/0 returns all community_fridges - Verifies fixture appears in list
    2. get_community_fridge!/1 returns the community_fridge with given id - Basic retrieval
    3. create_community_fridge/1 with valid data creates a community_fridge - Creation validation
    4. create_community_fridge/1 with invalid data returns error changeset - Error handling
    5. update_community_fridge/2 with valid data updates the community_fridge - Update with pin operator validation
    6. update_community_fridge/2 with invalid data returns error changeset - Update error handling
    7. change_community_fridge/1 returns a community_fridge changeset - Changeset generation
    8. delete_community_fridge/1 deletes the community_fridge - Deletion and verification

community_fridges ordering Describe Block (no setup)

  • Test: list_community_fridges/0 returns active fridges first then alphabetically by name
    • Creates 3 community fridges with different active statuses and names
    • Verifies correct sort order: active=true first, then by name alphabetically
    • Tests multi-record list ordering logic

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for managing community fridges, including creating, viewing, updating, and removing fridge listings.
    • Fridge listings include a name, description, photo, active status, pairing preference, and an associated location.
    • Listings are ordered with active fridges first, then alphabetically by name.

Introduces the CommunityFridge schema, migration, and test fixtures as the first step of the community fridges feature.
The cubic-dev review suggested supporting a `location:` key in
fixture(:community_fridge, ...) so callers can pass a location struct
directly, matching the pattern used by rider and campaign fixtures.

Implementing this requires fixture(:location) to persist a Location
record and return a struct with an id, rather than returning a plain
map as it does today. That change affects every fixture and test that
currently calls fixture(:location), so the blast radius is wider than
  this PR's scope.

The improvement will be handled in a follow-up PR dedicated to
normalising the location fixture across the test suite.
  Add unique_constraint(:location_id) to CommunityFridge.changeset/2 so a
location cannot be associated with more than one community fridge. The
has_one relationship does not enforce cardinality at the database level,
so this constraint surfaces duplicate-location errors as changeset errors.

Also trim the minimal-attributes changeset test to focus on required
  fields rather than default values.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to dd8e3

The change is narrowly scoped, but deleting a linked location can leave an active fridge whose normal updates require repairing its location first. No new remotely reachable attack path was demonstrated. Production exposure and operational recovery remain unconfirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new required-location contract is not preserved through parent deletion. Nilification leaves the fridge record and its active status intact, and listing still returns it. After reload, normal updates—including deactivation—require a replacement location. This introduces a lifecycle and failure-containment gap, although reassignment or explicit fridge deletion remain available recovery actions.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — If exposed without caller controls, the context permits listing all fridge records and selecting records or existing locations by identifier. That potential scope is community-fridge data and its location associations; fridge deletion itself does not extend to deleting shared Location records. Attacker reachability and caller privileges were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The implemented boundary is attribute validation followed by database persistence. Foreign-key and uniqueness controls reject nonexistent or competing location associations, but these integrity controls are not authentication or authorization controls. The available evidence does not establish a bypass of an existing caller boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Parent deletion detaches the new dependent record without deactivating it. Preserving a listable active orphan while rejecting its ordinary updates weakens lifecycle failure containment, not a demonstrated security boundary. Explicit deletion or reassignment bounds the recovery problem.

  - Add `persisted_location` fixture that inserts a Location into the
  database
    (complements existing in-memory `location` fixture)
  - Add `community_fridge` fixture that lazily creates a persisted location
  and
    handles required location_id association
  - Add LocationsTest with full coverage of community_fridge operations
  - Use setup block to eliminate fixture repetition across tests
  - Use pin operator (^) in pattern matches to validate update attrs without
    assertion repetition
  - Enable async: true for parallel test execution

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject null values for both boolean fields.

When an existing fridge receives %{active: nil} or %{pair_preferred: nil}, this changeset remains valid. Ecto accepts explicit nil during casting; schema defaults do not replace it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Both columns are null: false in priv/repo/migrations/20260825183237_add_community_fridges_table.exs, Lines 9–10. The update therefore raises a database error instead of returning {:error, changeset}. The unique and association constraints do not handle NOT NULL violations. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add :active and :pair_preferred to validate_required/2. This rejects nil while accepting false and the existing defaults. Add focused create and update tests with otherwise valid attributes and one null boolean at a time. (hexdocs.pm)
